Not Enough Space - But I do?!

So for the past 2 hours I've been trying to set up my new Oculus Rift that I just got, but its been a hassle. Now whenever I run the software the program says, "Not Enough Space The oculus rift need 6.37 gb of storage." Thing is I have a spare 437 gb drive that I want to us for it and it is in a D:\.
Although I installed the software through my D:\ Drive it keeps downloading the contents to my C:\ Drive and is overall annoying. I am trying to move the files by using the instructions on the support page, https://support.oculus.com/1142129705828091/ ,but nothing happens it just opens the folder and doesn't move it... !?

Can I get some assistance?

I had the exact same problem, here is the solution.

The problem is Oculus has a code line, where it picks and chooses which drive should be used, and the drive has to be "Basic" Type and "NTFS" format. I was on live support with oculus, before I figured out the problem.

1. Goto "Disk Management" in windows
2. Looks at your different drives and see if they are in "NTFS" format and "Basic" type. (Your drive is most likely "Dynamic" and in "NTFS" Format)

3 If they aren't you are going to want to backup all of your files on your D: drive and put them on your C: drive (If you  have space) or another drive for the time being. (Transferring your files will take a while)

4. Open Computer Management (Local), to open it press the windows key and R on your keyboard simultaneously and in the run window type compmgmt.msc and then press enter.

5
. In the console tree, click Computer Management and then click Disk Management.

6. Right-click each volume on the dynamic disk you want to convert to a basic disk, and then click Delete Volume for each   volume on the disk

7 When all volumes on the disk have been deleted, right-click the disk, and then click Convert To Basic Disk.

8  After this, you want to right click the disk again, then hit "Create new volume", go through all of the steps that it says.

8. After this, transfer all of your files back to your D: drive

9. Redownload Oculus setup

10. Ta Da

This worked for me you can do it under 5 minutes. Don't worry there's nothing wrong with this tutorial but you need atleast 20GB cuz you will be creating a virtual Drive

The question was raised in 2017. It's hard to believe that after 5 years, Meta still didn't bother to fix this obvious problematic bug !

So Meta, are you planning to keep this bug and annoy people forever? Or do you think giving people a bad first impression is the way you want to conduct your business, let along a social-based business that wants to make people like you ?

Yeah, the solution is easy. Just shrink a partition and create a new drive for Oculus. It's easy for techies like me, but it was very inconvenient for normal users. This bug is easily fixable. Yet, after 5 years, you still never bother to fix it. It only gives us techies low confidence that Meta actually cares about their users.

"meta" has serious problems with the error correction of its main software, it was difficult for me to understand the problem but now it seems simple to me.

The installer does not support hard drives that have a dynamic storage system instead of a basic storage system

Its better to set the separate folder for games.

Had the same issues, I was able to resolve it by forcing it to download to another drive that wasn't dynamic. Here's the easiest way to do it:

Move the install file to the root of the drive you want it installed on, right click in the empty space of the folder and select "Open in terminal" Assuming you have Windows Powershell enabled (I'm sure Command Prompt will also work), In the console, replacing [drive letter] with the drive letter you want it installed on(NOT C:) and enter "[drive letter]:\OculusSetup.exe /drive=[drive letter]". The Oculus software installer window will pop up and do its thing without being inept. YW ❤️

2025 and I ran into the same problem and on top of that I have dynamic drivers mixed up for 1 big driver. Windows 11 latest updates..

So what I did was..

1. I created a static virtual driver ( in the search type VHD - Create a Virtual Disk - Create VHD - Name it, add the location ( Make sure you create a new folder for it before you create the VHD otherwise if won't create it itself ).

2. Add at least 200 GB of size as the Link will download the VR apps there, apparently choosing TB instead of GB won't work so if you want to add a Terrabyte then use 1000 Gb.

3. Leave the VHDX option ticked. then make sure you click on FIXED Size and not Dynamically expnding one, Hit Create then leave the next page as it is ( Leave it as GPT )

4. On the next one you can add a name to it, leave as NTFS, then The Drive Letter you choose, later on it will be important to run the setup.

Hit Format and boom. You got your own static virtual partition.

Now copy paste the setup exe to the new virtual drive, use the good old :

"Locate where your OculusSetup is
In the address bar, clear it and type "cmd"
Then copy and paste this is into the command console "OculusSetup.exe /drive=D "

But instead of /drive=D you add the driver letter you set up on step 4.

I just did it, it installed, got into link and it's working. Hope it helps!
