Quest 3 lost all tracking

Brand new quest 3 just arrived, configured an everything was doing pretty well. Was just logging into a game when all tracking just stopped working, a window saying "Tracking lost" showed up, but I couldn't click anything since the controllers stopped working too, hand tracking also wasnt working. I tried cleaning up the cameras with a very soft towel, tried rebooting, resetting to factory settings, everything I could. The screen is either completely black, black with a dot or on the starting screen asking to turn on the controllers, but the screen just moves randomly and isn't following the headset movements at all. There is a white dot blinking on the left controller and they keep vibrating every few seconds.

Update
I've returned it, but before doing so I found out that the issue seems to be that little sensor on the inside of the headset, the one that sits right on the forehead. Everytime something is close enough, all tracking was just gone. When there was nothing on the sensor, I could see the tracking working when in the turn off screen at least, and could click with the controllers, but I was still completely unable to actually do anything other than turn on, turn off and factory reset the device. I'll get another one and hopefully it will be problem free, but if not I'll just wait a few months to try again. I do not believe it was sweat that broke it since it was worn for very little time, and it happened when i slightly adjusted the headset on my face. No force used or any mishandling of the product, it just stopped working. Makes me think there may have been some faulty connections or something of the sort going on in the inside of the headset.

What I did to find out that little sensor was the issue is I was removing the headset and putting it back on a few times. Eventually I just held the power button since the only other screen I could see was the turn off screen. I then noticed the tracking seems to go back so at first I thought it just wasnt built very well, but then I noticed putting my finger on the sensor caused the tracking to die. Apparently there is a way to disable that sensor trough developer tools from the oculus software on pc, but you also have to be able to access the headset's configurations. Not sure it would have helped, but I couldn't try it since I couldnt control anything.

Lets try to collect possible causes.

I used my headset only for about 25-30h in total.

The problem started within the last 5-8h of usage and keeps getting worse / more frequent.
Once I was in Beat Saber I was able to finish my session till the batterie was empty.

Now I try to list all I can imagine, what may caused this hardware failure:

* Overheating:
** silicone cover somehow blocks the air flow, and increases heat problems
** running the quest till the battery is empty and then immediately recharging the quest increases heat problems
* used the pupil distance "wheel" to often, breaks/loosens something inside (I tested some settings)
* Moving the side wings of the quest to often, breaks/loosens something inside
* somehow a drop of sweat finds its way inside (very unlikely)
* frequent charging of the battery causes any problem (freqent for me would be <20 charges)

My quest never fall down, I handled it with care.
My quest is on its way to get replaced. I hope my second quest 3 will not run in the same error, but as the problem seems to be often in the community I really wanna find out what the actual problem is, and if there is any way to prevent it.
I think it is weak hardware design, but knowing what exactly is the problem, could help to prevent it.

Please meta staff: help to clear this one!

I'm also very curious what could be causing this problem.

The only way to figure it out is to collect as muck info on how you (and others) are using your Quest 3.

1. Do you use any third-party accessories? Silicone face cove or custom headstraps?

2. What games do you play and for how long? Did you use Quest 3 for fitness/sports with intense physical activity?

3. Do you notice a little fogging on your lenses after you play?

4. Have you ever noticed small traces of sweat on Quest 3 after you play? If so, how close it to the nose gap?

5. Is tracking completely disappeared or does it appear sometimes?

1. No

2. Yes I use it for fitness / workouts. Especially Thrill of the Fight. It's one of the reasons I bought the thing.

3. No

4. No

5. When it says "Tracking lost", the device is completely unusable, even after factory reset. The only thing to do is get it replaced.

Just read about to much saved guardian boundaries. I needed to set up often with my quest 2.
But as my last try to fix my quest 3 problems was a factory reset, there couldn't be any guardia history left on the device, or what do you thinks about that, as a possible cause?

It would be useful to know if there is anyone else here who has this problem with permanent tracking lost and who also uses Quest 3 for fitness. Finding intersecting patterns helps narrow down the problem.

All I do is play beat saver and sweat. Had my right controller go out on my quest 2 from sweat.  But with the 3 I was real careful.  This is so disappointing,

The refurbished replacement arrived today.
The IPD adjustment "knob" is a little bit loose, but beside from this, I could not saw any severe shortcomings.

Setup: my controller did not connect within the setup (even with reset) but once the setup itself mentioned to reset (hold the buttons for 4s) the controller I was able to setup.

The headset patched to v64
(I could not see the big improvement in passthrou)

What I notice in comparision to my first headset:
the roomscan in the first headset allways was some cm off the ground (polygones hoverin 15cm over the actual floor)
now the poly-mesh fits better the room, and the area was wider.
but I dunno if this change is due to the new headset, or because of the new v64 (only tried v63 before)

Did anyone of you recognized a change in the scan with v64?

I played some easy songs in beat saber, so far everything okay. battery is now empty.
I really really hope, that this unit will work.

Hey everyone! Thanks for reaching out and flagging this issue with us.

I reached out to our internal team and they've let me know the best course of action would be to submit a bug report which will go directly to the engineers.

Along with that, I do highly suggest reaching out to MetaStoreHelp through PM if not already. They'll be able to provide some further troubleshooting and maybe look into some other options if nothing lands.

Thanks again!

I've just also suffered this issue and after a bit of success, where the headset appeared to be working apart from the controllers not apparently being able to point at anything, I finally went for the factory reset option.

For now, that appears to have fixed it, but let's say I won't be too surprised if and when it returns.

After a factory reset my issue appears to have gone away, at least for now, so I have my fingers crossed that it was just a one-off issue.

Only time will tell, but it has been almost a week of reasonably heavy use, without a recurrence, so hope springs eternal.  🙂

Give it time. U too will be left with a $500 paperweight.

Unfortunately, it would appear that your prediction has indeed come to pass.

Yesterday, I had a couple of occasions where the "lost tracking" message was displayed, but I was rather quickly able to get it working again, simply by taking it off, letting it time-out and then putting it back on again.

Today, however, when I first put the headset on, I got another failure and now this "workaround" does not appear to be working and I am left with an expensive, but totally useless piece of tech.

I guess I'll need to get a ticket submitted, but like you, I would not be happy in receiving a second hand, refurbished, replacement when I bought this one, brand new, only a couple of months ago.

Oh, by the way, the ambient temperatures for yesterday and today were not overly high and I certainly haven't been sweating.

My replacement now reched 25h playtime.
still no single "tracking lost"
what i made different:
I only adjusted the auto-scan-playroom
(on the first q3 I always draw by myself and renew the drawing of the roomscale quite a lot)

we will see...
wish you all luck with ur q3

PS: I wear glasses and sweet alot.
