[UNRESOLVED as of May 30, 2024] - Quest 3 Controller Tracking Issues

update May 30, 2024: There have been no updates/improvements to controller tracking since Meta Support marked this as solved! Community consensus seems to be that this issue stems from hardware/software limitations with the controllers, specifically the method of tracking (as a software developer working specifically in the machine learning and computer vision space, I agree that this technology is not particularly robust enough to handle some types of movement). If you play games that require fast hand movements and/or dynamic hand positioning, I would recommend not buying a Quest 3, unfortunately. I've heard some anecdotes regarding improved tracking with the Quest Pro controllers, but the improvements are marginal at best - not worth the additional ~$300 for minimal performance gains IMO. My personal recommendation is to stick to Quest 2. Not to detract from the various improvements that the Quest 3 has brought (e.g., color passthrough w/higher resolution, better hand tracking, higher overall hardware specs compared to Quest 2, etc.), but Quest 2 controller tracking is significantly better than the Quest 3's. Ideally, my hope is that Meta will push an update that allows for pairing Quest 2 controllers with the Quest 3, but as of right now, that's just a pipe dream as Meta has given no indication of making these headsets/controllers backwards compatible. While I'm (naively) hopeful that things will change, realistically speaking, I have 0 expectations and a lot of disappointment.

tl;dr: I've had a Quest 2 for almost 3 years. I received my Quest 3 today and was very excited to use it. Controller tracking performance is much worse than the Quest 2, at least in the context of games where you swing your arms as fast as you can. This was not a problem for the Quest 2 (unless controllers were physically damaged, e.g., hitting a wall, dropping them, etc.). Don't buy if you play games like Gorilla Tag, Beat Saber, Synth Riders, or any of the other games mentioned throughout this thread!!!

Question:
Are there ways to modify the Quest 3's controller tracking such that fast hand movements won't be affected by the prediction-like behavior where the in-game hand moves farther than you swing? When I perform a baseball throwing movement with my hand/arm, the tracking will not keep up and it ends up losing my hand's position for a fraction of a second, causing my in-game hand to be positioned farther away than my hand actually is (this is not an issue with Quest 2 controller tracking).

Details/Context:
I primarily use VR for exercise, and I mostly play Gorilla Tag. Gorilla Tag is a game where you play as the upper half of a gorilla, using your arms as your means of locomotion. Basically, you use your arms as if they were your legs, and you can run, climb trees, wall-run, etc. It's an infection-based tagging game where you join a lobby of up to 9 other people, and the game will randomly select a player to be the first tagger. The tagger(s) will continue tagging until everyone in the lobby has been tagged (infection-style), and then a random player will be selected as first tagger; this pattern just continuously repeats.

While the learning curve is pretty steep to play at a high level, there is a growing community of players who are very competitive (approx. 10-20k players based on the communities I participate in - Competitive Gorilla Tag on Discord and Gorilla Tag Competitive on Discord). As a prominent member of this community, people have been seeking my feedback on whether or not the Quest 3 is worth it. While I feel that a majority of the new features are amazing, I have had issues with the controller tracking.

Gorilla Tag is an active game where you're constantly swinging your arms as fast as you can to travel around the map(s) to avoid being tagged. The primary player base for the game is Quest 2 users. Aside from physical damage, most players have not had any problems with controller tracking on the Quest 2, aside from when the controller goes out of the tracking range of the headset (as expected).

However, the Quest 3 controllers lose tracking during medium-fast to fast hand movement (medium-fast: like playing catch with a friend; fast: throwing a baseball as hard as you can). The consequence of this in the context of Gorilla Tag is that your in-game arm extends to the game's max arm length frequently, causing your hand to collide with the wall/tree/ground and launch you away from the surface. This is a big issue for games/activities involving fast-paced hand movement as it's not nearly as reliable as the Quest 2 controller tracking performance.

Hey everyone, I've connected with the team and they are actively investigating tracking issues like you've mentioned. We'll be working to improve performance, especially for competitive players in games like Gorilla Tag, Supernatural, IB Cricket, and Eleven Table Tennis. We expect to roll some of these improvements in the upcoming releases.

I agree with the sentiment above. Could we get some kind of update, TheAntiSocializer?

If I had Boz's ear (my friends who used to work for Meta's VR division, like Cory Ondrejka, are no longer there), here's what I'd suggest:

  • Allow the Quest 3 to use Quest 2 controllers (assuming this is possible)
  • Start selling the Quest 3 headset standalone without controllers at a cheaper price, for folks who want to upgrade from their Quest 2, but keep the superior-for-tracking Quest 2 controllers.
  • Stop being radio silent
  • This would keep your most loyal VR enthusiast users happy

Meta: you're losing some money from returns and silence is the worst kind of customer service. I realize this is probably a drop in a bucket compared to your ad revenue, and you've moved onto the "new shiny" of LLMs. You probably regret renaming to Meta at this point. But you have a real chance here to improve what is a pretty crappy corporate reputation. I'd take every opportunity to improve if I were part of your corporate leadership.

Someone should persuade an influencer to make a video on this matter. Influencers make less important videos all the time lol.

Quest 3 has a larger tracking volume which is probably why most influencers believe quest 3 tracking is better. It is.

Quest is worse at high level beat saber play (with claw grip) and has less LED visibility for certain styles of eleven table tennis play. For 99% of people the quest 3 does not have "unusable" tracking like some people state without ever having used a quest 3. Yes it is a step backwards for certain people, but for me the tracking is quite surprising how good it is given there is no tracking ring. I thought it would be much worse.

One update,  we may have found a workaround solution.

We bought a pair of cheap controller extensions. This one is similar to the one we bought: https://amzn.to/4bjXHRe  but there are many different one on Amazon, Aliexpress...etc

We have been playing Beat Saber with these for 3 evenings (by holding the extension handle instead of the controller) and so far we have not encountered any "stuck controller" issue.

It is still a bit early to say it has 100% fixed our problems but it is looking pretty positive.  So i thought share it with you guys as it's a reasonably cheap solution (if it works!)

Obviously, it may not work for every game as you can't control the joystick at all when holding the extension handle. But it works well with Beat Saber

hmm. I've been thinking perhaps my fingers are just too long - they tend to block the lower infrared LED on the Quest 3 controller handles unless I'm very careful.  These extensions you're showing make it much easier to see all those LEDs so... maybe that's all there is to it.

Bad news, after 4 session with zero issues.    Yesterday the problem suddenly came back and the tracking would suddenly stop working again and happened many times.   NOTHING has changed as far as we are aware. The tracking issues just suddenly came back 😞

I've contacted one of the biggest tech youtubers who loves to make things like this public.  Fingers crossed he gets Meta moving on this.

I can confirm that so far 45 min played with new v 62.0 build and tracking is 100% better very little to no loss so far.

I cannot play beat saber and in death unchained anymore 😪

The accuracy of the controllers is zero...I miss head shots and combos that on Quest 2 were trivial... I had a replacement of the headset but all problems persit identical. Moreover even changing room, lights, batteries the controllers tend randomly to glitch. With IDU the bow sticks in the air for precious seconds and the player is doomed...

Meta please allow us to use the quest 2 controllers on Quest 3. It would solve any problem

Do somone here play beat saber 1.28 standalone on Quest 3?

I do not have problems with controllers drift. Only ONCE both dissapear for few sec. during gameplay on BS.

For me, anything higher than HARD is like game of luck. Same room, same lighting, same position, but one day BS hit notes working at 90% (10% I count as by mistakes), but another day 50% or more are like not registered.

Also often notes are hit, but no back chaptic response, no animation of hitting note. Note just pass, but is counted as registered and often with 20-30 points only. It looks like game do delayed decision: "ok, maybe it was hit, but I'm not sure where and how many points to give you. Get 20". And that kind o hit feel like rubbery. This happen for left and right controller.

Another repeatable thing is that even on slower songs, top-right notes are most affected to miss. I'm right handed. Even I do test and repeat that part of song > 10 times and when I run it earlier ~15 sec. before top-right note show, then in 90% cases I get miss. When I run that part of song ~3-5 sec. before top-right note show, then hit is registered. I'm not sure it's something broken in my right arm (learned pattern to early swing), or any kind de-synchro between what I see and what game register.

My quest 3 is on V62 PTC. I have checked with OVR toolkit to frame skip, but game run flat, stable 90 or 120Hz. Fresh, fully charged batteries in controllers. Hand tracking disabled. Tested on two rooms without glossy surfaces and direct pointed lights. I'm using default grip without cover IR lights. No rubber straps etc.

I think it's because Meta decided to try and cut hardware costs by using AI prediction instead of sufficient sensors.  Doubt there's anything you can do about it, maybe turn off hand tracking if you have it on so that there are more resources for the AI.

Even worse than this! They push customers to buy the pro controllers (300€!!), provided that they do not allow to use Q2 controllers on Q3! It is a sort of scam, you buy a good headset, but if you want to use it properly, you have to buy separate controllers (at the cost of 300€!!) and you are not allowed to use those you already have (Q2).

Consider that none would spend 300€ for pro controllers if they could play Beat Saber or In death Unchained with perfectly working Q2 controllers for 1/3 of the price
