[UNRESOLVED as of May 30, 2024] - Quest 3 Controller Tracking Issues

update May 30, 2024: There have been no updates/improvements to controller tracking since Meta Support marked this as solved! Community consensus seems to be that this issue stems from hardware/software limitations with the controllers, specifically the method of tracking (as a software developer working specifically in the machine learning and computer vision space, I agree that this technology is not particularly robust enough to handle some types of movement). If you play games that require fast hand movements and/or dynamic hand positioning, I would recommend not buying a Quest 3, unfortunately. I've heard some anecdotes regarding improved tracking with the Quest Pro controllers, but the improvements are marginal at best - not worth the additional ~$300 for minimal performance gains IMO. My personal recommendation is to stick to Quest 2. Not to detract from the various improvements that the Quest 3 has brought (e.g., color passthrough w/higher resolution, better hand tracking, higher overall hardware specs compared to Quest 2, etc.), but Quest 2 controller tracking is significantly better than the Quest 3's. Ideally, my hope is that Meta will push an update that allows for pairing Quest 2 controllers with the Quest 3, but as of right now, that's just a pipe dream as Meta has given no indication of making these headsets/controllers backwards compatible. While I'm (naively) hopeful that things will change, realistically speaking, I have 0 expectations and a lot of disappointment.

tl;dr: I've had a Quest 2 for almost 3 years. I received my Quest 3 today and was very excited to use it. Controller tracking performance is much worse than the Quest 2, at least in the context of games where you swing your arms as fast as you can. This was not a problem for the Quest 2 (unless controllers were physically damaged, e.g., hitting a wall, dropping them, etc.). Don't buy if you play games like Gorilla Tag, Beat Saber, Synth Riders, or any of the other games mentioned throughout this thread!!!

Question:
Are there ways to modify the Quest 3's controller tracking such that fast hand movements won't be affected by the prediction-like behavior where the in-game hand moves farther than you swing? When I perform a baseball throwing movement with my hand/arm, the tracking will not keep up and it ends up losing my hand's position for a fraction of a second, causing my in-game hand to be positioned farther away than my hand actually is (this is not an issue with Quest 2 controller tracking).

Details/Context:
I primarily use VR for exercise, and I mostly play Gorilla Tag. Gorilla Tag is a game where you play as the upper half of a gorilla, using your arms as your means of locomotion. Basically, you use your arms as if they were your legs, and you can run, climb trees, wall-run, etc. It's an infection-based tagging game where you join a lobby of up to 9 other people, and the game will randomly select a player to be the first tagger. The tagger(s) will continue tagging until everyone in the lobby has been tagged (infection-style), and then a random player will be selected as first tagger; this pattern just continuously repeats.

While the learning curve is pretty steep to play at a high level, there is a growing community of players who are very competitive (approx. 10-20k players based on the communities I participate in - Competitive Gorilla Tag on Discord and Gorilla Tag Competitive on Discord). As a prominent member of this community, people have been seeking my feedback on whether or not the Quest 3 is worth it. While I feel that a majority of the new features are amazing, I have had issues with the controller tracking.

Gorilla Tag is an active game where you're constantly swinging your arms as fast as you can to travel around the map(s) to avoid being tagged. The primary player base for the game is Quest 2 users. Aside from physical damage, most players have not had any problems with controller tracking on the Quest 2, aside from when the controller goes out of the tracking range of the headset (as expected).

However, the Quest 3 controllers lose tracking during medium-fast to fast hand movement (medium-fast: like playing catch with a friend; fast: throwing a baseball as hard as you can). The consequence of this in the context of Gorilla Tag is that your in-game arm extends to the game's max arm length frequently, causing your hand to collide with the wall/tree/ground and launch you away from the surface. This is a big issue for games/activities involving fast-paced hand movement as it's not nearly as reliable as the Quest 2 controller tracking performance.

Hey everyone, I've connected with the team and they are actively investigating tracking issues like you've mentioned. We'll be working to improve performance, especially for competitive players in games like Gorilla Tag, Supernatural, IB Cricket, and Eleven Table Tennis. We expect to roll some of these improvements in the upcoming releases.

Hey SkulllFace DeeX0 akki136 - Can you please provide me with the following info?

  • Software Version no.
  • Firmware no.
  • Are you on a PTC build (experimental features enabled)

Then, run the device until you get the issue and immediately submit a bug report - make sure you pop "IMU" in the comment of the bug report.

I'm going to raise this once again, and hopefully we'll be able to get this fixed! 🍒

cherrycolaa Many of us provided all of this information, YouTube videos, and even more detailed information repeatedly earlier in this thread, and after we did, there was radio silence. Many of us returned our Quest 3 devices because they simply didn't work well enough for serious fitness gamers: the Quest 2 is a superior device. Please review our posts earlier in the thread if you need solid repros.

Thanks for your reply FlipperPA - I understand that some of this information has already been requested, but there have been version updates since then, and a lot of the information I'm seeing is months old which no longer serves.

I also need anyone experiencing this issue to submit a bug report when they run into the issue and add "IMU" in the comment sections, this acronym needs to be included so our engineers can find their report.

Unfortunately I wont be able to re-raise this issue until I receive updated info. 🍒

Hey SkulllFace, for the OS version you should be able to find it by navigating to Settings > System > Software update.

Then for the controller firmware number, take a look at the settings in your mobile app 🙂

Perfect, thank you!

Now to find the controller firmware version - Profile Icon > Headset Settings > Controllers > Tap a controller > Firmware version

Did you manage to submit a bug report with the message ''IMU''? SkulllFace

Hello all, I replaced the controllers with Meta Quest Touch Pro VR Controllers $260 , now I can play Eleven Table Tennis again. Quest 3 controllers are not working with any fast movements (losing track for a moment).  I tried all the suggestions and settings, but nothing is worked for me. So for Touch Pro VR Controllers solved the problem.

To the Meta team, are you planning to provide promo options for people like me? Free game? accessory?
You released the Quest 3 with worse tracking performance than Quest 2, and did not even give us an option to use Quest 2 controllers.

Hello, I am new to the VR Arena and recently acquired a Quest 3. I got attracted by using a friends Quest 2 and was impressed by playing Eleven Table tennis. To be honest, i am a little disappointed with the controller tracking on the Quest 3, it does not feel as refined as the Quest 2 controllers. Constant screen stuttering due to controller tracking, i can reproduce the issue endlessly playing on ETT.

Hope Meta can resolve this... I have opted for the beta firmware updates and can only hope it will be resolved soon.

Can you pair the controllers from quest 2 to a quest 3. A lot of people tent to like the quest 2 controllers

sadly nope, you cannot use Q2 controllers on a Q3...

as for why one setup doesnt have issue while another does... my guess is it might be related to lighting or objects in the room, relective materials, shadows, etc... if i have multiple lights all around in order to eliminate all shadows, it tends to work much better at high speed...

So I had never used VR before September 2024... I got a used Quest 1 for 80$... played beatsaber from Steam in Questlink mode for a month (about 25 hours give or take)... starting to get decent and I enjoy it a lot. Last weekend, my wife decided we should get the new Quest3... However, the downgrade when it comes to controller tracking is insane... We also got the Zyber Handles that looked so fun... and while they are fun, its completely unusable with a game like beatsaber because they lose tracking all the time!

I have since removed the handles, but even with the controllers themselves alone, I seem to miss about 5 to 10 percents of the notes (especially in the top and lower corners)... and this was not a problem with the Quest 1!!

It's madness that our 80$ used hardware worked better than the brand new 800$(CAD) one...

I found a ton of youtube video and reddit threads showing and explaining clearly the issue... I cannot belive this is being shipped and sold that way with such a massive hardware issue.... I was told getting the "pro" controllers might help a bit (until i get at the insane high speed where even those fails) but the cost is like 400$(CAD) which is ridiculously too high...

I have no idea what we'll do, but most likely go and refund the whole thing unless i can figure out a solution soon

Yea i read this and a couple other posts similar when i 1st got my quest 3 and hoping it wouldnt be an issue. It very much so is. I used to own a quest 2 as well and going from the quest 2 to the quest 3 has some very noticeable differences, quality was way better obviously and stayed that way and im happy with that. The tracking on the other hand has just slowly gotten worse, at 1st when i would do slow movements the tracking is smoother than the quest 2 but faster movements like u said will cut in and out and would re appear at a different spot, i had this exact issue when i used to play gorilla tag and honestly its really sad, i would still play gorilla tag or golf+ every week if the tracking was as good as the quest 2 but over time i noticed that my controllers even started just disconnecting after i move it too quick, the re-appear issue got worse as well, i even replaced both of the controllers within the past 8 months and the exact same thing has happened essentially meta made a really **bleep**ty cheap product and it was a scam in my opinion considering i cant even use the **bleep** thing without spending another $150 for crap controllers

Bought my first Q3 last year at release. Controller tracking was terrible making the Q3 basically unusable.

Now I have a new Q3 and controller tracking is no issues at all anymore. Additionally I bought me an IR light to support controller tracking.

If you have the chance, replace your Q3 with a new one. There a lot of faulty Q3.

Don't even bother trying fixing it. Support is no use at all. In the end they said the controllers are supposed to be used only in very well lit environments. nothing wrong, everything as designed lol

Specifically which sku do you have? Which model and when did you purchase.

Also what IR light are you referring to?
