[UNRESOLVED as of May 30, 2024] - Quest 3 Controller Tracking Issues

update May 30, 2024: There have been no updates/improvements to controller tracking since Meta Support marked this as solved! Community consensus seems to be that this issue stems from hardware/software limitations with the controllers, specifically the method of tracking (as a software developer working specifically in the machine learning and computer vision space, I agree that this technology is not particularly robust enough to handle some types of movement). If you play games that require fast hand movements and/or dynamic hand positioning, I would recommend not buying a Quest 3, unfortunately. I've heard some anecdotes regarding improved tracking with the Quest Pro controllers, but the improvements are marginal at best - not worth the additional ~$300 for minimal performance gains IMO. My personal recommendation is to stick to Quest 2. Not to detract from the various improvements that the Quest 3 has brought (e.g., color passthrough w/higher resolution, better hand tracking, higher overall hardware specs compared to Quest 2, etc.), but Quest 2 controller tracking is significantly better than the Quest 3's. Ideally, my hope is that Meta will push an update that allows for pairing Quest 2 controllers with the Quest 3, but as of right now, that's just a pipe dream as Meta has given no indication of making these headsets/controllers backwards compatible. While I'm (naively) hopeful that things will change, realistically speaking, I have 0 expectations and a lot of disappointment.

tl;dr: I've had a Quest 2 for almost 3 years. I received my Quest 3 today and was very excited to use it. Controller tracking performance is much worse than the Quest 2, at least in the context of games where you swing your arms as fast as you can. This was not a problem for the Quest 2 (unless controllers were physically damaged, e.g., hitting a wall, dropping them, etc.). Don't buy if you play games like Gorilla Tag, Beat Saber, Synth Riders, or any of the other games mentioned throughout this thread!!!

Question:
Are there ways to modify the Quest 3's controller tracking such that fast hand movements won't be affected by the prediction-like behavior where the in-game hand moves farther than you swing? When I perform a baseball throwing movement with my hand/arm, the tracking will not keep up and it ends up losing my hand's position for a fraction of a second, causing my in-game hand to be positioned farther away than my hand actually is (this is not an issue with Quest 2 controller tracking).

Details/Context:
I primarily use VR for exercise, and I mostly play Gorilla Tag. Gorilla Tag is a game where you play as the upper half of a gorilla, using your arms as your means of locomotion. Basically, you use your arms as if they were your legs, and you can run, climb trees, wall-run, etc. It's an infection-based tagging game where you join a lobby of up to 9 other people, and the game will randomly select a player to be the first tagger. The tagger(s) will continue tagging until everyone in the lobby has been tagged (infection-style), and then a random player will be selected as first tagger; this pattern just continuously repeats.

While the learning curve is pretty steep to play at a high level, there is a growing community of players who are very competitive (approx. 10-20k players based on the communities I participate in - Competitive Gorilla Tag on Discord and Gorilla Tag Competitive on Discord). As a prominent member of this community, people have been seeking my feedback on whether or not the Quest 3 is worth it. While I feel that a majority of the new features are amazing, I have had issues with the controller tracking.

Gorilla Tag is an active game where you're constantly swinging your arms as fast as you can to travel around the map(s) to avoid being tagged. The primary player base for the game is Quest 2 users. Aside from physical damage, most players have not had any problems with controller tracking on the Quest 2, aside from when the controller goes out of the tracking range of the headset (as expected).

However, the Quest 3 controllers lose tracking during medium-fast to fast hand movement (medium-fast: like playing catch with a friend; fast: throwing a baseball as hard as you can). The consequence of this in the context of Gorilla Tag is that your in-game arm extends to the game's max arm length frequently, causing your hand to collide with the wall/tree/ground and launch you away from the surface. This is a big issue for games/activities involving fast-paced hand movement as it's not nearly as reliable as the Quest 2 controller tracking performance.

Hey everyone, I've connected with the team and they are actively investigating tracking issues like you've mentioned. We'll be working to improve performance, especially for competitive players in games like Gorilla Tag, Supernatural, IB Cricket, and Eleven Table Tennis. We expect to roll some of these improvements in the upcoming releases.

That's good news, but that's an article about another problem entirely: one or more controllers being constantly disconnected.

I'll be curious to see reports from people on this thread. The two issues could be related, but I'm curious to see what some hardcore ETT and Beat Saber players have to say. The author of the article sounds like a fairly casual user describing a different issue, as Floydman mentioned.

also thinking about returning my quest 3. Have huge problems playing contractors even when im just holding the gun and aiming. The aim gets stuck and looses tracking even though my hands are in the visible space all time. Never had this problem on q2

So far, Quest 3 is not living up to the expectations whatsoever. Except the lens and a slightly better resolution, it's overall a downgrade compared to the Quest 2. If you play games like Beat Saber(especially on expert+ aiming for full combo), V59 solved nothing, new controller firmware solved nothing, it's still extremely bad. Whoever thought that you can combine 2 camera(instead of 4) and hand tracking to be a better solution should be just removed from that position. This thing can barely even manage to track my hands properly when typing slowly on the keyboard, how in the earth would be good to track fast movements at all. Dissapointed, 500 dollar machine, trillion dollar company and basic issues after that many years of experience.

I'm just going to return my quest 3.

I feel like every one should do the same.

This would get meta to devote more resources to fixing this.

Unbelievable that such a basic function (proper tracking!) has been overlooked.... none of the 'Meta ambassadors' ever mentioned it as an issue either but going backward for such an essential part of the experience is baffling. Imagine Sony releasing a PS6 with laggy bluetooth and worst haptic and claiming they've improved things... Just goes to show how little popularity the Quest in unfortunately garnering. Such a frustrating experience.

The Quest 3 update to v59 didn't do anything to address the tracking issues that we've been discussing here. I've been a software engineer for over three decades, and don't see how any software update can fix what is a hardware design issue. The Quest 3 was trying to get too cute during the design process, betting on "A.I." guesswork being good enough. Well, it isn't, and it won't ever be. I recently gave a talk at DjangoCon US on not buying too much into the current "A.I." hype cycle; it looks like Meta did (Boz in particular), and lost that bet.

It fixed another bug where controllers were not appearing at all, and the release notes don't even mention that fix.

Funny enough I got issues just lately after the update. Before I didn't experience issues.
Now I am consistently infuriated by tracking in BeatSaber. It cant track properly even on Hard with faster song (+20%) speed. Losing about 3 - 4 notes in 3 minutes. When it happens I can see that my saber is following my hand movement but its behind the movement itself which feels surreal because my brain say something is wrong.
Sometimes I also see issues with where on big swings the tracking is lost and handle is flying somewhere far since my border lights up. Problem is my border is quite large. about 6 by 6 meters and there is no way I would get close to it so the controller is obviously flying somewhere behind my back. The moment hand comes back its getting back.

So I suppose the latest update made it worse for me at least. Also funny enough I also spotted that games lag from time to time, like headset is not able to keep up. That was not the case before, so what ever happened seems to put more strain on the headset itself.

I still use my quest 2 for any game requiring movement. The tracking is so bad and even worse since last week's update. It is so bad the controller just moved about on its own when the actual controller sits on a table. I will return if they do t fix soon

I officially am done with the Q3 and the tracking issues - it's being returned to sender.  I ordered a new Q2 to replace my dying one.  I may dump the Quest entirely for the Pico 5 when it comes out, but that is TBD.

If/when Meta fixes their Q3 issues, I'll think about jumping back in.  Good luck to all of you here!  🙂

My two children are playing Gorilla Tag in the same room. One is using a Quest 3 and is experiencing tracking issues, while the other is using a Quest 2 without any problems. I can also confirm through personal experience that IBCricket has tracking problems also. As a software developer, I'm sensitive to how technology should respond and familiar with what to expect.

My kids are fighting over the older Quest 2, even though there's a new Quest 3 in the room! As a parent who spent $800 AUD on this, it's quite disappointing.

However, what's puzzling is the inconsistency. Some days it works well, while on other days, it doesn't.

I'm not at the point of calling this a regretful purchase yet, but I am telling my friends to perhaps wait a bit for any future offerings from other companies. I'm also avoiding buying any other games.
