Question

v74: Quest 3 not fully charging

My Quest 3 auto-updated to V74 Build 5070966.11190.510 (PTC) on the 31st and it won't charge past 73-74%. At that percentage, the orange charging light starts to flash. This one time I woke up to the quest turned on and in the factory reset menu by itself (the one you get from holding Power + Vol down), with it overheating.

In the settings, there are no updates but whenever I restart or shut down the quest, each time it says wait while the Quest is updating for maybe 2s, which is unusual.

Things I've already tried:

1. Soft/hard reboot.

2. Different cables/chargers.

3. Unpairing and repairing the controllers (as suggested by chat support)

4. Turning off the Quest and then charging it but the same issue persists

Some observations with my problems with my Quest 3 charging:

    • I turned off my HMD at 75% and kept the plug in.
    • After a good 30 minutes, I turned it back on and see that's it still at 75%, which did not charge.
    • I turned the HMD off again and pressed the Power button briefly; usually the screen will show the battery percentage. It did not do this, so I thought my HMD was done for.
    • But I pressed a bit longer, and the battery percentage finally showed up
    • I gave it 30 minutes, then checked the percentage again; it's now at 95%

If you're having problems charging the HMD while it's off, press the power button and see if the percentage screen shows up. If not, then it will likely not charge. You'll have to press the power button until the percentage screen shows up for it to charge.

I've done all that and more and the red light flashes. I cannot emphasize enough what I've tried here. My headset is broken due to their update like others here that are getting RMAs. I am glad you were able to fix the issue on your own. I've done everything and more over and over and over again and the red light flashes and the headset won't charge.

I just got an email from Meta telling me that this thread is related to the December problem with the white screen and does not apply to my headset followed by a list of troubleshooting steps that I have done 20 times since 4/12 when their update broke my headset. I really don't get why they are not consistent in addressing what is clearly an update issue that they have acknowledged by issuing RMAs for OOW headsets.

    Hey

Orange flashing light usually means something wrong with the charging, I don't think its loose, it may be battery too heat? Or just a V74 shenanigan

Here is a step to try though. Meta has a hidden Charge Control app that can be used, launch it through ADB command here: adb shell am start -n com.oculus.os.chargecontrol/.ChargeControl

It will open a charge control window on the Quest, you can toggle enable and disable charge limit.

    Hope this help!

cvan65 I think u better just wait for the next update to fix this (which dont know when) like me.

in the mean time, just buy a battery strap to help extend the battery while playing

oh and if u want to try, I found that this is working.
charge ur quest until it max (70% or something now). then plug it out. wait about couple of hours (maybe ? I wait about 3 days though as I was busy and didnt use it much, and actually I forgot to continue) then charge it again. I got to 100% like this

So I get an email every week asking if my issue has been resolved, I respond asking them to stop trying to close my case and of course it has not been resolved. Then I receive an email stating that Good News, I'm eligible for a replacement. Then 2 days later I get another email wanting me to provide the exact same info I provided already to see if I'm eligible for a replacement. It's like they are playing who's case is it anyway. WTF!!!

Well an update on my headset.... it's dead. V74 messed up my battery charging. V76 didn't fix the issue when it installed. Then I had another V76 update last night and now there is no tracking, black screen, and controllers kept vibrating. Factory reset and sideload of update did not fix it at all. Got label info for an RMA, so I'll be sending it back for a replacement. What a headache, meta literally updated my headset to death.

Received replacement ( refurbished - lens has some weird diagonal lines it in on full dark screen) headset today and it charged to 100%, it then updated automatically to 76 which I was trying to avoid but couldn't. I will update further on how the charging goes after use. More to come........
Update:  (correction, version 74 is the latest on the headset) it is charging properly now. I now notice when the previous headset was connected to my PC it would not work in my USB 3.0 slot. This new headset does. I think the issue was a damaged USB port on the headset via firmware update. So far so good.

Note: on getting the replacement it is difficult to pair the controllers you currently have, you have to wait 5 mins for a button to pop up on the pairing screen and then follow the instructions.

suggestion for everyone with the issue. Get a replacement.

A friend who's headset stopped charging past 75% late Feb after the v74 update has discovered that her headset is now charging to 100%. Staying there if using her bobo battery pack, or discharging slowly when not. Her headset is still on v74 tho.!? She claimed it was nice to see the green light on after 5-6 weeks of its absence. (I bet it was.) Hope for us all?  🤞

    1. This sounds very like my situation. Also  V 74, also charged green after ages, but sad to say, also discharges some overnight, even though plugged in. Then it wont charge back up  and carries on losing charge - so back to square one.  Still then I got it to charge back up again to full power with the same steps as before (see earlier posts). I will see if this is a feasible workaround or it gets worse and update.

Just got my refurb replacement. Attached my battery strap and put it in the dock. Solid orange lights. Not touching it until I see the lights go green.

My refurb replacement seems to be operating properly. It came with v65, updated to v74 then to v76. Charging has been normal.  I would suggest anyone with this charging glitch press for a replacement. I didn’t want to wait and hope they push a fix.

I am thinking that the issue in the firmware happens further back and it stays with the updates.

The only way to fix would be to do a drop back to an older version of the firmware before the error and then update back from there. But that isn’t an option. You can't get an older versions of the OS.

I think gatorman.2024 has it right. Try to get a replacement and then start off from the version you get and update from there.

Well I'm planning on using mine plugged in for the foreseeable. A perminant 75% charge is okish, it falls a little when using battery heavy apps such as real vr fishing then charges back up.  My friend tells me her headset is now acting normal, green lights, normal charging and discharging times.  she did buy a second quest 3, and had left her original unused for a few weeks, maybe that was the cure?? I keep hearing rumours that the quest 4 will be released earlier than advertised or one of the quest alternatives(deckard) and would hate to have 2 quest 3s collecting dust on the shelves by the end of 2025.

Just came here to respond to this post and would like to say , updated to v74 like a month maybe two month's ago now at this rate , broke my headset and refused to charge past 72/73 and im now currently on update v76 and I am STILL not charging past 70.

100% a broken update and the LONGER they sit here and take to address this the more ridiculous it is.

can't use my headset for even an hour without this thing wanting to be dead because it refuses to full charge.

I've owned mine since day one release and this is a bit obnoxiously LONG overdue for a **bleep** fix especially since I've been here since the **bleep** devkit 1 and never experienced a update that broke and ruined the entire experience this bad YET.

My unit was 14 months old out of warranty and I pushed to get it replaced. It wouldn’t charge past 73% and the battery strap wouldn’t charge unless I plugged it in separately. I got the replacement 2 days ago and it’s working properly. The fact that they will replace makes me think that whatever they broke isn’t so easy to fix, and I didn’t want a defective unit.

Mine was out of warranty too.  Got a replacement a couple of days ago and it is working and charging correctly.  I agree with d0gg that it would appear that rolling back to an earlier firmware version and updating from there is the only way to truly solve the issues.  Mine came with V71 and updated from there.  I can also relate to cvan65 and his issues trying to pair the controllers.  I had to chat with support to understand that you will not be able to pair the controllers within the app but instead need to do that in the headset.  Upon getting the replacement, you will need to go through the setup phase and use the "gaze" feature to select and advance the setup.  The gaze feature shows a white dot in the headset.  If you move your head, the dot will move allowing you to select options.  However, the instructions are to quickly push the power button to make the selection.  This just put me in the power off window.  I had to push the volume adjust button to make the selection.  This should not be this difficult or confusing where you need to contact support to figure out how to set up the headset!
