Question

v74: Quest 3 not fully charging

My Quest 3 auto-updated to V74 Build 5070966.11190.510 (PTC) on the 31st and it won't charge past 73-74%. At that percentage, the orange charging light starts to flash. This one time I woke up to the quest turned on and in the factory reset menu by itself (the one you get from holding Power + Vol down), with it overheating.

In the settings, there are no updates but whenever I restart or shut down the quest, each time it says wait while the Quest is updating for maybe 2s, which is unusual.

Things I've already tried:

1. Soft/hard reboot.

2. Different cables/chargers.

3. Unpairing and repairing the controllers (as suggested by chat support)

4. Turning off the Quest and then charging it but the same issue persists

What makes me hesitant to ask for a replacement is that I will be getting a refurb ... My headset is brand new, I don't want a refurb that might have other issues and send me in an endless support/RMA cycle, I have 0 confidence in Meta customer service at this point ...

Well, just got an update prompt from v74.1020 to v74.1021, did a hard reboot after the update and the issue seems to be resolved for me now. Have been using the headset plugged in for 2 hours and it hasn't dropped from 100%.

Would be nice if the patch notes contained more info than "Various bug fixes and performance improvement", not a fan of the lootbox patch concept.

Same problem here, but I'm already on 74.1021 and nothing has changed.

When you write "hard reboot", please be more specific: is it "hard reset" (which is "factory reset", it erases everything) or just a "soft reset" (push the on/off button for 30 sec)... or simply a regular "restart".

I can't do a factory reset, as I would lose everything, so.... Thanks in advance.

I had an accident so I couldnt play vr for about 2 weeks.

I just started using it again yesterday. it was from 100% (that I said I left it unplugged after charging it to 75% for a few days and then charging it again and it could go to 100%). I played until the battery about 30%. Turn it off, wait for about 10 mins for the update to complete (because if I plugged it just then, it would charged when updating, and it would stop charging after the update complete. weird behavior that it picked up a long time ago, its been like that for about half a year I think. This usually made me forgot to unplug and plug it again to start charging for real, and usually caught me off guard when I want to use the quest and the battery is still not charged yet).

So after the update, then I charged it from 6 pm, and I unplugged it at about 2 am. I intended to only charged it for about 3 hours, but I forgot to unplugged it before sleeping.
When I checked it (turn it on) after sleeping, the battery is 88%.

It was not 100%, but at least it could charged more than 80% now lol. I think it just charged very slow after some percentage (75% maybe?), but at least it's charging more now. It might go to 100% if I left it till 6 am maybe ? I will try again when I play again later

Mine is in a pretty weird situation right now. Since updating to v74 (now v76), I'm unable to use my Quest 3 without the battery draining fast, even with battery packs attached. It also seems that it won't charge while in sleep mode nor will it maintain charge when plugged in. It'll just assume nothing is plugged into the charging port at all. I've also experienced the blinking orange/red light as described in previous posts.

However, when powered off and letting it sit inactive for a little while, the battery charges as normal going back to high 90s and sometimes 100%.

I'm really wondering if this is also related to the charging issues that most people have reported recently. I did receive the label/information to receive a replacement, but I'm feeling very conflicted about it at the moment. There might be a possibility for a fix later on down the road, though at the same time, I don't want to deal with a defective unit much longer. But if it is true that going to an older firmware and updating will resolve the issues, then maybe getting a replacement might not be a bad idea.

I used to fly in MSFS for hours, charging while using the Quest3 via the link cable. After v74 and now v76 that is not working at all anymore and the headset just occasionally charge normally via the power cord. I've been in touch with support who offered me a replacement headset, but what's that good for when the issue is the firmware? Why isn't there an option to revert back to older firmware's like v72 that worked perfectly? The Quest3 is currently just a useless brick. Sad!

My Q3 and QPro are both working fine with the latest non-ptc v76 and non-beta v76 on meta-link pc app.  I have the official link cable connected to my z790mb usb3.2 gen2 type-c port and, starting with a fully charged headset battery, it maintains my headset batteries above 80% for a very long time.  Link has never actually added charge to either headset, but adds enough to maintain +80%.  This has always been the case, for me anyway.

In your case, I don't think your problem is software/firmware related (unless you maybe have sideloaded/installed some non-compliant mods).  So, maybe you do need a replacement mate.  Good luck and cheers.

I got my replacement. Came with v65. It updated to v72, then v74, and now v76. The battery charging is working normally. Maybe some of us got a corrupted update with v74.

**Edit - Oh and if anyone is curious--I didn't do any side loading, no after-market products for me--I only used Meta products and the Meta built in updates.

Looks like more folks are pressing to get the headset replaced for which I'm happy for them Meta is playing ball, sad that this can't be remedied by a firmware fix since that's what kicked it all off (at least for me).

For my case--I've not been around much due to travel and a crazy work schedule, but I've been checking the headset off and on when I'm back.  It's been very interesting as sometimes it goes down from 100% to 72% and then back up again (I can see the charging lights on the dock changing color from green to amber when I'm home, then sometimes back again so I'll pick it up off the dock to check the charge to see where we're at).

I still believe whole heartedly that the firmware update kicked this off on some headsets, but the why of it I don't know.  Maybe there were variations on the chip/component (different supplier, or batch, etc.) that didn't play well after the patch and here we are.

For now, I'll keep an eye on it and if it gets worse, I'll put a ticket in and roll the refurb dice. For now, I can typically get the battery pack to charge by charging it directly and the headset charging separately on the dock.

I'd open a ticket but the last time I played this game for the Elite Headstrap it was maddening (I was an early adopter and got the infamous detection bug that took forever to get addressed after much battling).

One nice thing that the last little update on 27 APR did for me, now I can see the aggregate battery charge when the EliteStrap w/ battery is plugged in.  It still says it's "charging" the headset but at least it shows the total average sum of both Headset + Strap batteries. Who knows, maybe next update it'll right itself!   ðŸ˜‰

Anyway, I wish you all the best of luck in your future VR endeavors!!

v77 quest still not charging properly, 75% that's max and adb sideload is not helping. Got to try update it from v76 to v77 and issue is still here, got this problem from v74 and can't get rid of it

Recieved my replacement headset today, screens are perfect just like my last headset but tracking seems a little smoother on this one and the passthrough seems less grainy but that's probably just placebo as I've been using my Quest 2 while I was waiting for my replacement.

The headset is currently on charge, with a solid orange light and I'm at 95% charge right now just waiting to see that green light,, it's on the V74 build atm, it updated as soon as I switched it on and connected to my wifi, looks like the update definitley broke something in my old headset as right now this new headset is charging without issue on v74 so my advice like other's have said if you are having issues get the headset replaced as one of the updates has clearly broken something.

And literally as I was typing this my headset light just turned green, happy days!

Cool. Happy for you! I just got a request for a replacement approved by the local store I bought it from. Fingers crossed it will work out just fine 🙂

I was also fortunate enough to be getting a replacement after jumping through all those hoops heh. Gonna be sending back the defective headset soon. Hopefully this new replacement treats me well. 🙂

I'm in a country far away and bought it through amazon.com, so no replacement for me. I should have learned my lesson with the pcvr breaking update that lasted for over a month on the Q2, meta is incompetent

pepper9881 Great to hear. Hopefully it won't take too long for the rest of us to get this version to see if our headsets charging issues are resolved as well.

Full factory reset seems to have solved it, now to set everything up again...
Nope, went back to the same issue. Factory reset does not work
