v74: Quest 3 not fully charging

My Quest 3 auto-updated to V74 Build 5070966.11190.510 (PTC) on the 31st and it won't charge past 73-74%. At that percentage, the orange charging light starts to flash. This one time I woke up to the quest turned on and in the factory reset menu by itself (the one you get from holding Power + Vol down), with it overheating.

In the settings, there are no updates but whenever I restart or shut down the quest, each time it says wait while the Quest is updating for maybe 2s, which is unusual.

Things I've already tried:

1. Soft/hard reboot.

2. Different cables/chargers.

3. Unpairing and repairing the controllers (as suggested by chat support)

4. Turning off the Quest and then charging it but the same issue persists

There's no comfort to be had in any of that, you have been given the run around, for sure.  I like to believe the problem will be resolved before to long, (maybe V75 will do it. πŸ™ƒ) it's a waiting game for all. At least the headset is still usable for most while we do so.  Didn't they brick several headsets not so long ago?  with bad updates.

I think I'm done with Meta entirely.  I've been in VR since 2016.  I've still got a Quest 1, 2, and 3s in addition to my Q3.  They've lost me as a customer for good after treating me like dirt for a week and then telling me to just buy a new headset.

I do not think a firmware update will fix this.  I had the exact same problem on my Quest 2 in the Spring/Summer of 2023--my headset immediately quit charging above 75% after an update.  Because Quest 3 was announced to ship in about 6 months, I just lived with it.  This time, I've got over $700 in this kit and it's only 1.5 years old.  But yeah....anybody thinking that Meta will somehow fix this issue with a new update are probably wrong.  We'll see.  In desperation, I've sent Andrew Bosworth a message on FB.  Maybe if everybody else with this problem tells him he'll take notice.  But I'm done with Quest now.  This has been an indescriably miserable customer "support" experience and they've lost a customer who was totally brand-loyal to them for years.

Interesting. I think it still charges to 100% but does not display it. I was able to do a 6hr race and the charge went from 75 to 72. Usually it goes from 100 to 72 prior v74. Could be some bug some coffee drinker forgot to plug πŸ˜† 🀣

Via meta quest link of course.

Since the new update from v72 to v74 is having all kinds of issues for one the headset not charging to 100 percent which was fine with v72 but once the update jumped to v74 lots of issues occurred. Then in the Golf Plus my club just disappears and then it blacks out for a few seconds while trying to hit the ball. I don't know why a OS update is causing these issues but can we please have v72 back until you resolve the issues with v74 to keep us the customers happy, TY

My Quest 3 head also only charges to 73%- 75%. It started about 3 days ago.
I am hoping it is only a software fix that is required.

Dealing with same issue. Right after the update. Had to send in to meta for replacement. Customer service was awful.

my headset won't charge past the 70s after the v74 update as well. If left alone after power off, not plugged in for an hour, then plugged in it will charge to 100%, but if I don't unplug it from the charger shortly after it hits full charge it will actually discharge on the charger right back to 73% and stay there. This update is so bugged and not a good look to ruin the charging on a stand alone device. Get your crap together meta, you are pissing people off.

It seems crazy. Hopefully there will be a fix soon.

Same issue, right after the update.

Had the same issue on a brand new quest 3.

A full "real" power off and power back on solved it.

Whenever you select "power off", it doesn't fully power off and probably some services that need to go down for the full update to go through don't.

    To power off completely:

    - do the standard "power off" of the headset

    - "volume -" and "power" for a few secs until the recovery menu pops up

    - Select the "power off" option (select with volume +/- & power button)

    - "volume -" and "power" for a few secs until the recovery menu pops up

    - "boot normally" (not sure of the exact name of the option anymore, but should look like it. DO NOT select the "factory reset" option unless you are okay with loosing all of your data ;))

Those steps solved two issues I had since the update, the headset charging painfully slow, and the headset not charging fully.

    Hope this helps πŸ˜‰

That worked for me too. I didn't think it would but it did.
Many thanks for sharing the solution. πŸ˜ƒ

It is charging full now. When I shut down using the software menu there is a soft flickering of light in the left lens. But if instead of using the software shutdown I press and hold to power button again until it shuts down that flickering light is no longer there. Some sort of glitch?????

It solved my problem for about a day. It is back to only charging 75% again. Repeating the shut down from the factory reset menu doesn't change anything now.

DarkVcious, all I can say is...Holy...CRAP!

    In a good way btw!

I did your power off/on as described and it came up and doesn't act all weird with the external battery!!!!!  Charging it now with the Elite Strap connected, but by Jove I think you fixed it!!!

I will test and report back and then spread your fame throughout all the forums I've posted in about the post v74 blues.  THANK YOU, SIR.

Ahem, you'd think Meta support would know this and tell customers that opened tickets? Maybe not, but thank you for sharing this!!!!!

Tech support 101 "Have you tried turning it off and on again ?" πŸ˜„

For the 5w charge, usb c is a bit complicated, the device, charger and cable all need to "agree" on the max power to be sent through, but I don't know enough about it to be really helpful, I'd say try other combinations of cable, charger, device and see what happens.

That issue of devices "not powering off completely" is a recurring issue I have been noticing lately with battery powered devices. I had a similar issue with a bluetooth card crashing so bad it wasn't recognised anymore on a windows machine, the fix was to do a hard power off so that every component stopped receiving power and properly reset, so if you ever have very strange issue with some battery powered thing, look up how to completely power it off (sometimes requires unplugging the battery).

I'm at a point where I might as well try Alt+F4 too πŸ’€

So update from the last post, after hard rebooting it still had the same issue with orange light flashing. So I turned it off completely from the recovery menu and then charged it overnight. This time the only difference was the orange light didn't flash it was lit up all the time but the charge limit was the same ~75%.

For the 5w charging I'm fairly familiar with different standards. The 140w gan charger I use supports QC3.0/ PD3.0/ PPS. I think it supports more standards which are uncommon. It just doesn't support Chinese VOOC standard, I tried it on my dad's oneplus 13 which does 100w. The cable supports 240w charging/40gbps transfer/thunderbolt 4.0.

I just looked it up for quest 3, it's not specific. It just says it supports PD but also that it can't be a standard "non-compliant" PD charger. Whatever that's means πŸ™„. And it supports 45w charging too. So idk what to even think about 5w charging. I think it has always been this slowly to charge so maybe it's just marketingΒΏ
