v74: Quest 3 not fully charging

My Quest 3 auto-updated to V74 Build 5070966.11190.510 (PTC) on the 31st and it won't charge past 73-74%. At that percentage, the orange charging light starts to flash. This one time I woke up to the quest turned on and in the factory reset menu by itself (the one you get from holding Power + Vol down), with it overheating.

In the settings, there are no updates but whenever I restart or shut down the quest, each time it says wait while the Quest is updating for maybe 2s, which is unusual.

Things I've already tried:

1. Soft/hard reboot.

2. Different cables/chargers.

3. Unpairing and repairing the controllers (as suggested by chat support)

4. Turning off the Quest and then charging it but the same issue persists

Tried unplugging my Elite Strap with Battery from the Quest 3 and charging overnight.  It hit 100%!!!!

That's the last of the good news though, booted in, looked good although immediately went to 99% just from booting up. Plugged the Elite Strap back in and it says it's "charging" and then I can watch it pull the battery from the Elite Strap down at the same time the headset battery charge drops (and it's not adding the battery pack to the overall battery percentage).

I agree, they need to fix this and stop goofing the updates.

I think I know what they did wrong, maybe.

For those of us who are running into the "can't charge beyond 75%" are you using an external battery of any kind?  If so, unplug it, and then charge your headset. I'm betting you'll see it charge to 100%.  You can then take your headset off the charger and plug that external battery into it. Leave it a while and you'll see that the external battery will be down some, and maybe even the headset battery.

I "think" that the headset is pulling from the external battery constantly if it's plugged in.  If you have it charging with the battery on it, then the headset is charging from the battery and maybe the A/C. I think that the 75% is some type of prevention for overcharge (e.g. you'll see the weird left eye lens "flickering"), I think (again wild guessing here) that the flickering is some type of mechanism to intentionally drain the battery.

My theory is that is also why when you power on the headset with the batter plugged in it says the headset is "charging" and you won't see the total % you should.

For now, I'm unplugging my Elite Strap with Battery while I charge the headset, and I will have to swap the cord back and forth between the headset/strap battery.  When I want to play, I'll hook it all together and that should act like the battery is "charging" the headset instead of using it correctly.

I'll let you know how it goes, unless of course they hotfix this and it's no longer an issue moving forward before I can get a chance.

I'm plugged into the official charger with the included usb c cable and it's still not charging beyond 76%, I haven't even tried charging with my bobovr battery or my zyber neck charger, all these issues with charging only started after the V74 update, everything worked on V72 so whatever they did with update V74 is interfering with the charging process and it's not right because it wasn't happening before the update.

Whats funny is, my headset doesn't charge past 78% and it runs at 78% all the time when plugged in, when I go into SteamVR Link using Quest Link, the Quest Link says its at 100% not 78%, so I am guessing that there's a glitch in the software saying that the headset battery is lower than it really is.

This is what I've done, and it seems to have worked. However, keep in mind that I use Quest 3 with the Elite Strap with battery and the official charging dock.

1- Unplug the Elite Strap with battery and charge it by itself using the USB port it has.

2- Once the battery is full, plug it back into the headset and place the headset back on the charging dock.

3- Now wait until the headset is fully charged when you see all lights are green.

So far it's been charging normally again once I've done that. However, it's been only a few hours. I need to see if the problem comes back or if the battery or headset die too fast

Update 1 After more testing, the procedure above works to get it to fully charge; however, it still drains the external and internal batteries superfast, and you need to keep doing the above every time you want to keep it fully charged.

Update 2 It totally doesn't work; now it won't charge past %77 no matter what I do.

    RealAct,

I think you and I are on the same page (and the same setup btw).  Once powered up do you notice if you hover over the battery indicator it shows "charging" and no longer the total percent that it used to show of Headset+EliteStrap?  It does show both charges, but it drops alarmingly fast.

I'll try what you suggested as well (totally charge the external), but I suspect I'll see the same behavior where the headset will drain the EliteStrap even though I charge it on the Elite Strap. 😞

Well, unfortunately, the procedure works to get it to fully charge; however, it's still broken. I turned the headset off overnight after getting it fully charged; this morning when I turned it back on, it was eating the external battery, and it was at %70, so yeah, even when turned off it's doing what's not supposed to do, and it drains the external battery; even the headset itself was at %92, while still eating the external battery.

So yeah, I have learned how to make it fully charged, but the fundamental issue is still there, and it won't charge  normally past %77 or %78.

Then, when I tried to charge normally, the headset kept draining the battery while the external battery was not charging at all.

UPDATE It just doesn't charge past %77, at this point it keeps draining both the external and internal batteries, even when seating on the official dock. If I try to charge the battery and headset without the dock, it doesn't seem to be working either.

At this point, I can without a doubt say that my Quest 3 is the most buggy piece of technology I have ever had. Sad to say and truly disappointing, I'm about to take my Quest 2 out of the box again and start using it instead of this buggy mess.

RealAct Thank you for your testing, it lines up with what I'm seeing too.

mugensukuyomi and ConvexRook Thank you for confirming it happens "without" the Elite Strap, or the Bobo, or whatever else people plug into the USB-C that could cause the Headset to report incorrectly on the charge.

I think that's going to be very helpful to know if this happens all the time, only under certain circumstances, and what all the variables entail. To that end, and again thank you for confirming you're not using any external batteries, but follow up question--are you charging with the Meta Charging dock?  Or are you charging via a USB-C cable into the headset directly? **Note, the dock uses the metal contacts under the front of your headset, "not" the USB-C--so a different way to charge the headset).

Why do I ask? Both RealAct and I can plug (just the Quest 3 headset) into the Meta Charging Dock, and it will charge just fine and peachy to 100%.  However, if I have the battery plugged into the USB-C, it's a no go which makes think it's something they messed up with the USB-C settings on the headset itself with v74. If I have more time, I'll try and test this using the Meta USB-C charging cord directly into the Quest 3 USB-C port. If I'm right, it'll stop at that ~75% mark.

And for @Racer994566, Steve_Oap answered the Public Test Channel. The second question (how to roll back to v72) I don't think you can now that v74 is the official version (that's why the factory rollback didn't put you back to v72).  Might be able to side load it, but I've never messed with that on my headset. If anyone else knows please feel free to drop that info here in the discussion!

I tried the sideload option and it will not work.  The Meta upload software link won't connect with the headset.  Others have had the same result.  Likely because there is no other software to add if you have already downloaded V74 and V74 is the official version, as you have said.

As far as charging goes, I will add my two cents.  I charge the headset on the dock with the extended battery plugged into the headset and get the headset charged to about 77-78%.  I then disconnect the dock and the extended battery from the headset.  I then plug the usb-c cable directly into the extended battery and I can get the extended battery to charge to 100%,

Thanks h2odoc1141 I think the extra data is helpful.  It's not so much an issue that the headset can't charge as much as there's an issue with how the headset interacts with something plugged into the USB-C.  Whether that's a battery or the charging cord and no battery.

Also thank you on the info on the side load. I guess we'll just have to wait it out and do whatever work arounds we feel safe/comfortable with in the meantime.

I am curious if this will gain legs and impact more and more users and show up in my VR news feed. I get the feeling the only folks "not" impacted will be those that don't have a battery pack attached and use the docking station to charge "just" the headset.

I've posted earlier in this thread (as well as another).  My headset is still broken due to the v74 bug.  I contacted Meta support over a week ago.  They offered the expected troubleshooting (use online to tool to re-install v74, then reset the headset).  That didn't work (of course).  The agent ("Sarah") then asked me to provide quite a bit of info (name, mailing address, Meta profile name, receipt for my Quest, serial #, etc.).  I immediately replied on the 12th but never heard back.  Then I received an email stating my support ticket would be closed due to inactivity.  I reached out and was contacted by a second agent ("Katy") who told me that I had failed to provide the requested information so I sent it again on March 15th.  Again I received no response whatsoever.  So I reached out yet again--this time a third agent ("Siya") contacted me and told me they never received my response?!?  So today I sent her 3 separate emails--the first with only 1 attachment, the second with 2 attachments, and a third with no attachments.  In each email I requested they immediately acknowledge receipt.

It sure seems like I'm getting jerked around.  At the very minimum Meta support is disorganized and stacked against actually providing support.  I'm just absolutely livid.  I've purchased every single Quest headset since 2019.  My Quest 3 was $700 when I bought it.  It is almost unusable at this point due to the v74 bug.  Even though it turns on, the controller tracking is severely impacted by the headsets instability.  Of course Meta doesn't have an actual phone number and I'm left at the mercy of foreign "support" agents who gleefuly blow me off, provide no actual support, and take no ownership of my trouble ticket.  I'm just absolutely DISGUSTED by this treatment and if it's not rapidly resolved I'm done with Quest.

We are consumers me are at their mercy. We can only wait for a fix. I just purchased a vive pro 2 just becuase I need to do endurance races without my headset dying. So that solves my battery dilemma for now. 😆

Bye Meta, Valve's next headset can't come quicker......

I really hope they bring a fix soon; my headset is useless now. I left it charging all day, and after 6 hours there, I looked, and the headset just ate the whole external battery juice while the external battery did not charge anymore. External battery, ZERO percent.

    Headset, around 40 percent.

    Absolutely useless.

And just like that--after getting jerked around for a week, Meta tells me they won't help or replace my headset and I have to buy a refurbished unit.  I think it's about time for a class-action lawsuit over this v74 update.

Same thing with me.  Even after pointing to all the others having issues their solution was to buy a refurbished headset.

How much did they propose to charge you?  Seriously--it's time we start discussing a class-action lawsuit.
