Question

v74: Quest 3 not fully charging

My Quest 3 auto-updated to V74 Build 5070966.11190.510 (PTC) on the 31st and it won't charge past 73-74%. At that percentage, the orange charging light starts to flash. This one time I woke up to the quest turned on and in the factory reset menu by itself (the one you get from holding Power + Vol down), with it overheating.

In the settings, there are no updates but whenever I restart or shut down the quest, each time it says wait while the Quest is updating for maybe 2s, which is unusual.

Things I've already tried:

1. Soft/hard reboot.

2. Different cables/chargers.

3. Unpairing and repairing the controllers (as suggested by chat support)

4. Turning off the Quest and then charging it but the same issue persists

I'm ok with the charge level as opposed to an exploding battery strapped to my face.🤣

Just found this thread after going around in circles with support. Stuck at 75%, with no charge to the extended battery strap on the meta dock. Im 5 weeks out of warranty and the offer is pay $350 for refurb with 90 day warranty, no to that. Is there any hope for a fix, sure seems like a software glitch when it's happening exactly the same to multiple users. Are we stuck going through charging gyrations to try to use the headset indefinitely?

The charging issue started soon as I got v74.

then I got a second v74 update few days ago.

    issue is still there.

then I got another v74 update today (1081).

    issue is still there.

    Latest I heard from meta

This is Christine, and your case has been forwarded to me for review. It appears you're unable to past from 74% while charging your Meta Quest 3 headset. I understand this has been on going for a while now, so allow me to look into this for you.

Upon careful review, we've determined that what you've experiencing is one of the cases which our engineering team is currently aware of and working on a fix. As of now, there's no additional information or workarounds to resolve the issue but I'm consistently monitoring it for you.

We appreciate your cooperation and patience while we're working on this. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to reply with this email as we're here for you.

    Most sincerely,

Typical response as always. I have multiple issues still open with them and all replies sound exactly the same. It's been almost a whole year and they still haven't attempted to fix the guardian being visible during recording. They add new stuff before fixing the old stuff probably in the laughable name of progress.

My HMD updated to v76.1021 build 5091273.6310.520 .

    A couple of observations:

    • Using the browser doesn't drain the battery anymore when plugged in to outlet
    • Godin's Virtual Desktop still does a slow drain on the battery even when plugged in to outlet
    • Flashing LED still happens when HMD is on sleep mode. But unplugging and replugging the charger to the HMD stops the flashing LED

Update... Nope. v76 didn't fix my problems. Charging is still spotty.

Like others said v76 did nothing for the charging issue. Sleeping still flashes the charging led and only way to charge over 73% the headset has to be powered off. Screen flashes while charging still, and sometimes to get it charged at all you have to unplug and replug the cable a couple of times. Sometimes it will drain the charge while plugged in. Please fix this already it's seriously annoying.

I gave up with Meta entirely. Problem after problem and customer service is the worst. This exact issue was the straw that broke the camels back. Wasted money on a headset that Meta can break with what is clearly untested updates, then instead of offering a replacement because they broke it, they offer a tiny discount so you can buy another. Honestly save your hard earned money and invest it in a headset from a company who actually care. My quest 3 is now a dust collector, i moved over to Valve Index and soon Big Screen Beyond 2, best decision i made, no more factory resets every week. Valve will be releasing a standalone headset soon, should look into that one if you want a headset that will work, with miles better customer service. Sorry (Not sorry) Meta, the damage is done.

The current v74 (non-ptc) continues to work very well standalone vr/mr and PCVR with Link and Air Link with both my Q3/512Gb and QPro/rtx4090.  My only complaint is the higher battery draw when using Air Link.  I've filed a bug report on that.

I still find it a bit hard to believe that some seem to be having sooo many issues.  Esp. when most of these meta-rants seem to come from the same few people, many who are low-post-wonders, and/or Reddit kiddie re-posts,  many who probably don't even own a Quest headset, lol!

Multi posts on same issue(s) doesn't add much value imho.  If you are actually an experienced user having issues, file a bug report and work with meta support to try to resolve it.  Ranting about these multiple times isn't going to help much and just fuels more meta-hating-reddit kiddie-ranters imho.

I’m experiencing the same issue after updating to PTC v74. I had previously rolled back to v72 (non-PTC), which allowed the device to charge fully to 100% as normal. However, it’s no longer possible to revert to v72 now.

Unfortunately, I live in a country that’s outside Meta’s warranty coverage. Here, we have a community where several users are encountering the same issue — especially with devices that have been used for over a year.

I hope the engineering team will take this issue seriously.

I guess the issue is more widespread as we get the closet rats now entering the thread. Lol this is a good sign fellas. 😀

From what I'm experiencing and reading it "SEEMS" there are two issues caused by the v74 (and later) updates that Meta needs to confirm and address.

    1) the Quest 3 is no longer fully charging immediately after use.  For some it will charge to 100% after the headset cools down but there's a very long delay before that happens and may even require a restart.  It's not a bad idea for Meta to have the Quest wait until the battery cools some before charging but this should not take hours.

    2) Until v74 the Quest could be kept at a 100% charge while in use by using a charger or power bank that provides 18 watts or more, even when playing power hungry games.  That no longer the case.  Does the quest now use more power, no longer utilize 18 watts from the USB-C port while in use or both?

Meta please confirm and DO NOT mark this as "resolved for visibility".  Meeting your SLAs is not the customers concern.  Keep the thread active until it's really resolved.

    And…

    3) if you power down the headset completely (hold power) and try to charge it, now with v74 and higher, it causes the eye backlight to flicker  once every 30 seconds indefinitely and repeatedly.

Yeah that too.  I noticed the powered off flicked at least once but didn't realize it was an other widespread issue. 👍
