V78.1028 failed to install on Quest 3s

V78.1028 has appeared on my Quest 3s today. However after 3 attempts to install it,where it says successfully installed and restart, the update still appears asking to be installed. Anyone else have this issue ? Is it a general problem?

So I guess we’re officially at QuestGate now — because this is ridiculous.

You can grab a random Quest 3 off the shelf and there’s a solid chance it’ll have firmware issues baked right in. That’s not a rare defect, that’s a widespread problem.
And yet… still no patch. Still no update. Still radio silence. If this isn’t a serious issue, then what exactly qualifies?

Here’s a thought: maybe Meta could release an actual announcement about this instead of letting customers flood the forums with the same troubleshooting posts over and over. Software mistakes happen — but ignoring them? That’s a choice.

So today, finally, v79 arrived! So I firstly made sure my Q3 headset (v78.1031 aka 78.1027) was fully charged and then decided to bite the bullet. I clicked the download button for the update and... the download bar instantly appeared (yay). But I noted that every time the bar progressed, it would cause all the text in the update window to jerk up and down in an unprofessional manner 🙄. Anyway, the bar filled to 100% and then the text said "Updating OS", so I waited about 3 minutes and then the "restart" button appeared. I held my breath and clicked the button and waited for the headset to restart. The Infinity logo appeared and then a firmware update progress bar appeared with the icon of a silicon chip. Looking good so far. After the progress bar got to 100%, the headset booted to the profile menu. But my controllers were no longer working! So I had to use hand tracking to select my profile. After I did this, to my relief, it auto-installed firmware updates for my controllers and they started working again. Phew. But wait, the OS menus now appeared, but my entire virtual environment was pitch black. Uh oh. I opened the settings menu and saw that I am now on V79.1027 (yay, finally they fixed that annoying version number bug). Then I tried turning on passthrough, which was fine, then when I switched it back off, my virtual environment had reappeared. Phew! But, disappointingly, STILL NO NAVIGATOR 😭.

I just checked. I got it too...
I enabled automatic updates a few days ago, so it wasn't as exciting as your update.
I only noticed the controller update.😂

I successfully updated to v79.0!

Didn’t much of difference

If you use the Elite headstrap with external battery, does your battery indicator now only show one battery connected after you power off your headset? Mine does that now after the v79.1027 update 😕.

Has anyone figured out what's happening with the new Navigator and the new Quest UI?

Finally updated correctly to v79.0 -- after all this update mess, thought I'd finally be rewarded with the new Navigator UI, BUT OF COURSE NOT :(

No new anything and as far as I can tell, all this over the past few months has made no  changes except when it comes to stress and annoyance.

As mentioned, I activated a friends new Quest headset a few weeks ago and after updating it for him, he had the new Navigator UI.

So -- what the heck????

I'm on v79.1027 and no new Navigator either. Let's face it, even if we get Navigator, it will probably be a massive anti-climax and simply introduce new problems. We will probably all complain that Navigator sux and we want the old interface back 😁.

Maybe that's why - starting from v81 - you can decide whether you want to use Navigator or not😂

Hey, guess what. I got another software update today, v79.1033. My headset was on v79.1027. So I updated and rebooted. Now my Quest 3 says I'm on v79.1031 🙃🤪🤭.

This whole situation has my Quest 3 sitting in the closet, barely being used anymore. For me (and maybe for others who are older or just not into the “social VR” side), the clunky interface is a deal breaker.

The fact that you can only pin a couple of favorite games while Meta permanently pins Horizon apps on the button bar is frustrating. I don’t care about Horizon Worlds or anything related, yet the UI keeps funneling me there. The limited customization just makes it feel overcrowded and not user-friendly. This is why I was eagerly waiting for the new navigator, but as others have noted -- that might not improve anything.

I still love VR, but at this point I’m seriously considering waiting for Apple to drop the price on Vision Pro—or release a lighter “Vision Air” type headset—because at least Apple tends to refine the experience instead of pushing you toward things you don’t want.

Honestly, it feels like Meta doesn’t have a real handle on what this headset should be. This summer has really shown that. :(

I had the same frustration when I started this thread but in the 3 months since then, everything is working fine. However if you're not happy I'd look at other headsets before going to the Apple. They have very little content and before long you will have played everything, and I wouldn't be sure about their long term commitment. I'd advise you not to give up yet. Only the Quest can give you the option of standalone games and a PCVR option too. Apple are gearing their headsets more for a mixed reality and business type use so you'll get limited value for the money. Navigator is pretty good so at least hang on until you get it would be my advice as the instigator of this thing ! 😁
