Question

V78.1028 failed to install on Quest 3s

V78.1028 has appeared on my Quest 3s today. However after 3 attempts to install it,where it says successfully installed and restart, the update still appears asking to be installed. Anyone else have this issue ? Is it a general problem?

Just wondering why this serious issue with the V78.1028 update loop isn’t getting more visibility, especially from YouTubers and creators in the Meta Quest space.

Please consider apporaching your fave Quest YouTuber with a post similar to mine below (or just copy mine if you like). More content on YouTube about this  might result in other Quest users not wasting their time trying to fix something not fixable or stressed thinking their headset is broken or contacting Meta for answers.

YouTuber:

I really appreciate your content and the way you cover the Quest ecosystem — always super helpful. That said, I’m surprised you (and many other creators) haven’t mentioned the serious update loop issue caused by V78.1028. A lot of users are currently stuck, stressed and unable to properly use their devices, and it’s becoming a major frustration in the community.

I know there's a lot of excitement around pushing new features and keeping things upbeat, but not covering something this widespread feels like a missed opportunity. Reporting on real problems builds more credibility, not less — and honestly, it could bring more subscribers your way because people respect honesty and transparency.

Hope you’ll look into it and help get the word out. It would mean a lot to those stuck in this loop and looking for answers.

I did report in comments on a few YT channels, but haven't seen a reply from any of them.

Same with my Quest 3. Also, battery keeps draining when it's off / plugged in. Like it literally "drains the battery" to plug it in. Only way to charge it is to hold down power button for 30 seconds, then plug it on while it's on. And it'll charge... while it's on. As soon as I turn it off... battery just bleeds like water. Been this way for weeks now. Praying the v.78.1028 fixes this. Suuuper frustrating!!

The v78.1028 update will not fix this.  When I factory reset my headset thinking the constant wanting to update to v78.1028 would be fixed by doing so, the reset installed v78.1028.  Its been this way since the update to Android 14, all the way back to v76

Oh, wasn't saying otherwise. Was saying the only way to get my Quest 3 to charge (at all) is to hold the power button down 30 seconds, then wile it's on and plug her in. Then... it starts to charge. Otherwise, plugging her in just kills the battery within mins. That's for me at least... an annoying work around. Hoping any update soon fixes this. Super annoying.

I am on 78.1028 currently and it tries to download and install an update. But I noticed that the build number I have installed is the same build that it tries to download ...so this is why it fails and redownloads each time I reboot my headset. I think It's a bug on their end.

Since meta doesn't seem to have any interest in this issue we are all having maybe it's time to switch to big screen beyond?

For people who don't mind not having a wired free or pc free device it would be excellent I imagine. Standalone is why I got mine. Not interested in being tethered. Fingers crossed ,they'll get better at updating ! Appreciate the comment.

It's doing this on my Quest 2 as well.

Currently on v78.1027. Initailly it offered me to update to v77.1028 which is on release notes. Restarted my headset then it offered me v78.1028. Won't update when you click on update. If you let the headset sit idle with power on it will say the update will install when you restart. Restart the headset and it is back to "update available".

The v78.1028 update appeared on my Quest 3 last night 9th July (I live in Australia). The update downloaded and prompted for a restart. After restarting, the headset was still on v78.1027 (but it says it was installed on 8th July)! I tried installing the update 3 times, but the headset appears to still be stuck on v78.1027 (build 5105226.11950.520). I've filled a bug report and turned off auto-updates for now.
