Question

V78.1028 failed to install on Quest 3s

V78.1028 has appeared on my Quest 3s today. However after 3 attempts to install it,where it says successfully installed and restart, the update still appears asking to be installed. Anyone else have this issue ? Is it a general problem?

Meta please fix this, I mean so much people are having this issue, I just got my meta quest 3s and for some reason I can't update, my os version is 78.0 and it wants me to update to 78.1028, but when I do, it turns on, meta logo spins, shuts off, turns on, meta logo spins and finally turns on with the same version,  and it still says the update is available and it's a rinse and repeat process, oh and also, the update takes 2 tries to just install it, let alone rebooting and so on

I wonder if there is any substance in this thought....

I note someone with build 1027 gets build 1028 and it is installed, then gets the new Navigator and menu system. He made a YT video on it.

But to get V1028 I do wonder if you need to have build 1027 already installed first...?

I have build 520, and it will only loop with 1028.

I am wondering if they are rolling out 1027 slowly to see what the feedback is with the new navigator etc, as 1027 seems to allow 1028 to actually install..?

The above are only my own thoughts and ramblings.

Interesting but it seems like an illogical thing to cause so confusion amongst users. After my factory reset, a failed ttempt to solve the problem, it reset from the later version of v78.1026, back to v78.0 and now it still won't update to V78.1028. I don't think it has anything to do with Navigator  but if it is, they still messed it up.

I just got this new message, this minute from Meta and basically it's saying nothing except we're working on it. I've suggested removing 1028 from the update to stop the thing trying constantly. Anyway here's the latest response

I take your point. However, there does seem to be a failing here, not for the first time in my experience, of intended updates that do not install for one reason or another.

I am reasonably sure it had installed for me on one of my two headsets. After removing nearly all of its games and content and then adding a secondary account and app sharing to it, then it seems I am no longer on that 1028 version I was sure that I was, but now back down to V78. build 520.

The other Quest 3 just keeps at build 520.

I see you got the std template type response.

Hopefully, they are aware of the situation.

New Navigator update as noted, Youtube link.

They build their own hardware, they have only a handful of variations and still make grave mistakes releasing firmware updates. Is not like Microsoft or another OS vendor releasing a software upgrade to a device that could have zillions of third party hardware combinations.

I had this year also the Quest2 upgrade issue that totally bricked it, and they had to replace it, so these types of things dont give me a lot of confidence, and they should have given an official statement, instead of us finding out through forums that we are not alone.

I'm really ticked off. Not only will this update not download but I don't know which update caused this but now I can't charge. Even if it charges somewhat the battery drains so fast.  I don't want to hear did you reset etc. I've tried everythinggggg.  My headset was fine before but whatever they did it seems like my headset is bricked. Yes it still works but I don't have the new UI and my headset doesn't last long due to battery drain. I'm hoping a update resolves all of this mess but Meta has a severe problem here. Why aren't any content creators talking about this. Meta seems to have bricked many headsets due to bad updates because it was fine before. Never again will I update anything until I know for sure it doesn't f everything up.

People do seem to have a variety of different issues. I have the 3s, don't have any problems with charging or draining but I see some people do. It's a good decision not to update without checking it's ok. It's why I keep auto update off and never use PTC updates, far too risky. If the approved updates have problems, you're asking to be bricked if using PTC! Just one point, even if auto update is off, after a period of time, the update will be force installed so it's something to be aware of. I would also switch off the update while charging option where it wakes up the device to install updates and shuts down afterwards.

Yeah I dont use the public test channel. Any update I've done is through official means. Whatever they did it broke my battery charging and now I'm stuck at a update that won't install. So ticked. Whose to say if I buy another one or it gets replaced to have the same thing happen again. Meta needs to fix this fast for 3 owners. They made headlines when the battery pack was causing problems with certain serial numbers and now this. They are legitimately bricking systems.

Since updating to v78 (or possibly receiving it through a forced OTA rollout), I've encountered the following problems ( Quest 3 )

1. **AR Menu Instability**: When using passthrough mode, the system menu (AR interface) often appears tilted, drifts slowly in space, or jitters. It occasionally does not anchor correctly to the environment and instead appears to "float" or "slide" unnaturally, even in a well-lit room with proper boundary setup.

2. **Passthrough View Misalignment**: The passthrough visuals appear warped or slightly off-center. In some cases, the alignment shifts with head movement in a way that feels unnatural or causes mild disorientation.

3. **Firmware Update Failure**: Despite receiving prompts to update or restart the device, the headset remains stuck on firmware v78. After multiple restarts, no further firmware updates are applied, and no newer version is visible in the System > Software Update menu.

4. **Factory Reset Attempted**: I’ve already attempted a full factory reset and manually reconfigured the headset, but the problem persists. Additionally, I've tested in different rooms with consistent lighting and reset Guardian boundaries multiple times.

These issues significantly affect the usability of passthrough and spatial AR features

WOW even after a factory reset, that v78 loop keeps happening?

So disappointing -- like everyone I was installing all these updates with the hope of the new navigator being rolled out, 4 updates later -- no navigator, instead an installation loop right out of "Ground Hog Day" and no new navigator thats for sure!

Hate going on about this but when you buy a number of games, have some media in installed, fave YouTube videor or shortcuts you want to create, apps to launch -- how do you find and organize anything at all, when you can only pin two extra items or have no ability to organize your games/apps based on folders? Hard to believe that the Quest iterface has been so limited for so long!

Yes, navigator is very slow in coming, but maybe the longer it takes the better. Who knows what fxxx ups we'll experience if it arrives too quickly.😂
