White horizontal stripe across screen while using link

Headset seems to work fine stand-alone.  I use the headset with IRacing, and often (not always) get a translucent horizontal stripe across the screen after about 15 minutes or so.  It doesn't feel like the headset is overheating.  This doesn't show up on the screen mirror on PC, or if I "mirror" with the debug tool.  Is this likely a failing display or is there somewhere else I should look?

UPDATE: POSSIBLE WORKAROUND/FIX USING REGISTRY EDITOR

As I theorized above, this issue does NOT occur for those who use Air Link. Air Link uses HEVC and uses 1 slice for its encoding, whereas wired Link uses H.264 and 5 slices for encoding. Whenever the white bar issue occurs, it is very likely the final 5th slice experiencing an error in the encoding. If you pay close attention when this occurs, you will likely notice it only occurs in the bottom slice of the screen.

To use this workaround, open Command Prompt and use the following:

  • reg add "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Oculus\RemoteHeadset" /v "numSlices" /t REG_DWORD /d "1" /f

I will be experimenting with this for the next few weeks to make sure  I do not get the white bar issue!

Original Post on REVISITED thread:

I have noticed that this is related to the horizontal encoding slices that are visible only through the Link Cable. A very easy stopgap solution would be to offer a toggle in the OculusDebugTool that allows us to turn OFF these encoding slices. Additionally, the encoding slices do not appear with Air Link and thus the issue has almost never occurred wirelessly according to both personal experience and these threads.

I thought my white stripe issue was fixed by moving USB port for the link cable but it's now returned!  I have it in both Dirt Rally titles, in AC I drove for hours with the same settings and no problem at all.  Very frustrating and logged with Oculus support, they must surely be aware of this.  I'm on v28 in headset & app, no ptc enabled.

Hi,

I have this issue also, both on Oculus Quest one and 2. My third Oculus Quest 2 seems to be ok. I have an Nvidia RTX 2080ti and it happens when I enable Oculus Link. I can't try AirLink on one of the devices, even if I have the same software version, the option is not there. Hope someone finds a solution, this is killing my experience with the device, I use it for playing long sessions of racing simulators.

AirLink works fine, there are no horizontal bars of compression or faint black lines that make visible where the strips of encoding meet. The bars only show up when it's through the Wired Link. I wonder if it has anything to do with the USB controllers. To add additional info to the thread and hoping maybe we can identify what the common thing that's causing the issue, I'm using an Asus Maximus XI Hero Wi-Fi motherboard.

I have managed to get AirLink to show up after doing a Reset from the phone app. The issue with the stripe is gone after resetting OculusDebugTool.exe to defaults 0

Well, I've finished another round of suggested fixes. Unfortunately none of them helped. 😞 I've tried mentioned older nVidia driver, no luck. I've also tried different Link settings in Oculus Debug Tool, including defaults, but sooner or later, the white stripe comes back. 😞 Only thing I can confirm is, that white stripe appears during the switch from 2D to 3D view (right before a race) in Dirt 2.0. Come on Oculus, are you working on fix or should I buy different headset?

Are you having these issues after the V28 update?

Yes, I'm updated to V28. I've never had this issue few months ago, it started happening around V23, V24 or V25.

I've just updated and tested it. Still the same issue for me as well.

I'm using an EVGA 3080 XC. I updated the firmware earlier today hoping that may have been the issue, but the problem still persists.

A member on the IRacing Forum said they reinstalled Windows which solved the problem.

If anyone here ends up formatting and reinstalling Windows, can they please confirm if this fixes the issue?

Hello,

I had not used my Quest 2 for a few days, it becomes so painful to use it in these conditions.

Today I started it to make the updates, hoping for a miracle from the V28.
And a miracle there was... since it's worse than before.

I started the PC, connected the headset, started Oculus link.

Oculus link was already in V28, the headset was in V27.

The headset updated to V28, and after that I had the white stripe even without going into a game.
So I restarted everything, PC and Quest 2, I restarted Oculus link, in less than 20 seconds I had the white stripe.
So NO Oculus team, the problem isn't with games, with Steam, or anything else, the problem is with Oculus link, and I can't use the hardware you sold me.
I didn't have a problem with V23, if you are not able to run later versions, allow users to use previous versions that their hardware works with.

Thank you.

Is anybody here using Dirt 2.0 from Oculus Store and also have the white stripe issue? I'm on Steam version running in Oculus VR mode.

I am doing the same as you. I tried the Oculus version also but got a refund because it had audio issues and the same graphical problem.
