White horizontal stripe across screen while using link

Headset seems to work fine stand-alone.  I use the headset with IRacing, and often (not always) get a translucent horizontal stripe across the screen after about 15 minutes or so.  It doesn't feel like the headset is overheating.  This doesn't show up on the screen mirror on PC, or if I "mirror" with the debug tool.  Is this likely a failing display or is there somewhere else I should look?

UPDATE: POSSIBLE WORKAROUND/FIX USING REGISTRY EDITOR

As I theorized above, this issue does NOT occur for those who use Air Link. Air Link uses HEVC and uses 1 slice for its encoding, whereas wired Link uses H.264 and 5 slices for encoding. Whenever the white bar issue occurs, it is very likely the final 5th slice experiencing an error in the encoding. If you pay close attention when this occurs, you will likely notice it only occurs in the bottom slice of the screen.

To use this workaround, open Command Prompt and use the following:

  • reg add "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Oculus\RemoteHeadset" /v "numSlices" /t REG_DWORD /d "1" /f

I will be experimenting with this for the next few weeks to make sure  I do not get the white bar issue!

Original Post on REVISITED thread:

I have noticed that this is related to the horizontal encoding slices that are visible only through the Link Cable. A very easy stopgap solution would be to offer a toggle in the OculusDebugTool that allows us to turn OFF these encoding slices. Additionally, the encoding slices do not appear with Air Link and thus the issue has almost never occurred wirelessly according to both personal experience and these threads.

It does it all the time and in all the games now. Link with cable is unusable and although air link is good for most games it's  not good enough for racing sims. On top of that the official link cable no longer charges my headset. Getting pretty frustrated with this. If HTC comes out with a good wireless pc headset I'm selling my quest 2 and will never come back to facebook.

This is turning into a debacle...

I have the same issue. Large white stripes spanning the width of the headset screen while using Oculus Link. I mainly play DCS World on Link.

I have noticed that the stripes sometimes "disappear" if I go to external view (as opposed to cockpit view) and change the view angle. Eventhough I have hypotheses, I really don't know what this means. Maybe this information can help us find the culprit between the game, SteamVR, Oculus Link and the headset...

Oculus, please fix.

Bonjour a tous .

Good morning all . One of the suggested solutions seems to have worked for me:

With OTT: Encode resolution 3000

Bitrate 300

Test on DCS 2.7 on a rather full Multi server, the problem only reappeared once and went away by itself by looking at an empty zone for 10 sec.
Good luck to all

Same problem with Dirt Rally 2. White band across the bottom of screen after several minutes. No problem with Assetto Corsa.  Have tried everything Oculus recommended to others and still the same. It’s a new Oculus Link problem. Getting very tired of how glitchy Link is and continues to be. Next upgrade may not be another Quest. Too frustrating and Quest games are too few and far between to justify months of aggravation.

Tried another Quest 2 from another retailer and had the exact same problem within minutes.

I did something different this time around and it did fix the issue. In Steam go into properties ,general and lunch option i added -vrmode Oculus. What does it do it will give you 3 choice when you lunch (no shortcut)Play dirt 2.0 (regular) (Steam VR mode) and (Oculus VR mode) I use the Oculus for about 1 hrs and it was perfect no horizontal stripe for now. Am running on Oculus app 90Hz 4704 X 2384. Hope this help

Thanks for the input, phillgood066. I still get the issue in Pavlov even when I run it using the Oculus SDK, so I think the issue happens regardless of which SDK you use.

I've tried reformatting my PC recently, just in case an older version of Windows 10 was causing some sort of issue, but the problem still remains.

Hi,

I changed my hardware configuration :
MB: Asus ROG Strix X299-E Gaming ==> MSI MPG B550 Gaming Carbon Wifi
CPU: Intel Core i7 7820X ==> AMD Ryzen 7 5800X
DDR4: G.Skill 32GB (4 * 😎 F4-3200C15Q-32GTZSW ==> G.Skill 32GB (2 * 16) F4-3600C16D-32GTZNC
GPU: no change ==> Asus RTX 3090 TUF OC
SSD: no change ==> Corsair Force MP600 1to m2 nvme pci4.0
PSU: no change ==> Corsair RM1000i

OS : Windows 10 64 Pro v.2004 => Windows 10 64 Pro v.20H2

New configuration, so full reinstallation of windows this week. Then I installed Steam, the drivers for my Fanatec wheel, and Oculus Link. NOTHING ELSE.
I started Assetto Corsa Competizione, after 15 minutes, nothing to report I hope it will last.
I started Dirt Rally 2.0, after 5 min of play, white horizontal strip as before !!!

This problem is definitely not a hardware problem on the PC, it is definitely not a Windows installation problem, or a software problem on my PC, it is an OCULUS problem AND NOTHING ELSE.

My advice, ask Oculus to move on to solve this problem, there is no point in tinkering with your programs, reinstalling Windows, or replacing anything on your PC, I have already done all that, and the result is the same.

It is so easy to reproduce this problem, it is incomprehensible that it has lasted for so long, and that Oculus does not solve it.

It is a real shame, a total disregard of its customers.

So I bought a completely new pc (I only reused my GPU RTX 3080), and the white stripes are gone on my Quest 1. I'm not saying it's not Oculus fault or anything, but it's definitely more complicated then a software bug or hardware failure. My fifty cents is that it has to do something with overheating since on my old mini-itx build the stripes appeared when the pc got verry noisy.

Thanks for sharing your experience, any information that might help is welcome.

I don't think it's related to anything other than an Oculus software problem, which may or may not manifest itself depending on the configurations.
After replacing almost everything on my PC, reinstalling Windows, the problem persists.

My bios settings are default, except the XMP profile enabled.
In all windows settings are by default, in Oculus link too, I did not even go to the Oculs Debug tool on this PC.
It has nothing to do with the temperature or overheating, I only have very well ventilated large tower cases, with AIO, and the problem can occur 2 minutes after starting the PC.

In fact this problem appeared for me for the first time with the V24 as I said in the first messages of this topic, while the V24 was in beta.

I went back to V23 by deactivating the beta option in Oculus link, the problem had totally disappeared for about 2 weeks (played about 50 hours without issue), and in the 5 minutes which followed the installation of the V24 that I could not avoid, the problem returned ... forever.

Honestly I don't see what I can do other than everything I have already done, I just have to wait for the problem to be solved by Oculus.

I just built a completely new PC last week and the white stripes remain. Water cooled everywhere so definitely not overheating.

I'm getting the stripes at like 65c GPU temp.

I even get them in replays where there is even less load.

OCULUS software problem

I agree 65c is not hot at all. Maybe it has something to do with BIOS-settings? I think I have stock BIOS-settings with XMP on, AI Overclocking on and Resizable Bar on, GPU stock settings. Another difference to my old pc is that the headset plugged in some distance away from the motherboard in a separate space in the case from the motherboard. Could it be the motherboard is causing some interference? Maybe this only became an issue after an Oculus Software-update? Just a shot in the dark here, but I'm trying to help. A final thought... Since everybody is buying AMD CPU's these days... My pc might be different in the fact that it has an Intel 10900K with ROG Maximus XII Z490-chipset (and so I have PCIe gen 3 instead of 4).

May 10, 2021

I have the issue plugged into the motherboard with a USB 3.0 to USB C adapter or into the USB C pcie card I purchased specifically for this so its not that.

The White Stripe appears progressively the longer I play. It is placed on the bottom half of the view and usually starts from rightmost point, seemingly corrupting it's way to the left over time, gaining brightness and reducing contrast.

Although it occurs using SteamVR, it also occurs using straight up Oculus software as well. It also appears in the Oculus Home.

When I activate passthrough on the Quest 2 it disappears, so it feels related to the Rift software, not the Quest.

It's very disturbing and makes for very uncomfortable gaming. Really look forward to this getting resolved.
