White horizontal stripe across screen while using link

Headset seems to work fine stand-alone.  I use the headset with IRacing, and often (not always) get a translucent horizontal stripe across the screen after about 15 minutes or so.  It doesn't feel like the headset is overheating.  This doesn't show up on the screen mirror on PC, or if I "mirror" with the debug tool.  Is this likely a failing display or is there somewhere else I should look?

UPDATE: POSSIBLE WORKAROUND/FIX USING REGISTRY EDITOR

As I theorized above, this issue does NOT occur for those who use Air Link. Air Link uses HEVC and uses 1 slice for its encoding, whereas wired Link uses H.264 and 5 slices for encoding. Whenever the white bar issue occurs, it is very likely the final 5th slice experiencing an error in the encoding. If you pay close attention when this occurs, you will likely notice it only occurs in the bottom slice of the screen.

To use this workaround, open Command Prompt and use the following:

  • reg add "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Oculus\RemoteHeadset" /v "numSlices" /t REG_DWORD /d "1" /f

I will be experimenting with this for the next few weeks to make sure  I do not get the white bar issue!

Original Post on REVISITED thread:

I have noticed that this is related to the horizontal encoding slices that are visible only through the Link Cable. A very easy stopgap solution would be to offer a toggle in the OculusDebugTool that allows us to turn OFF these encoding slices. Additionally, the encoding slices do not appear with Air Link and thus the issue has almost never occurred wirelessly according to both personal experience and these threads.

I had this a long time ago, but only sometimes. Then the problem dissapeared and I didn't see it for months. Since yesterday it's back. I have this in MS Flightsimulator (MS Store edition) and in SteamVR games. I had to login again in steam yesterday so maybe steam was updated? Also, the FOV factor I have set in Oculus Tray Tool which was 0.85 0.85 for months without touching suddenly keeps resetting to 0.00 0.00. I think these things might be related but I don't know in what way. It's making VR unusable in my opinion.

Oh and I notice an oculus update has been downloaded 2 days ago.. I'll uncheck the beta program thingie to see if it goes away.

ok, I unchecked the beta program in the desktop oculus app and it downloaded and installed the latest stable version right away. Have been playing for 40 minutes after that and no white, high compression bar at the bottom anymore. It seems they have reintroduced an old bug in the latest beta software. Hope they fix it before it gets released as stable..

to be clear: I had to uncheck the public test channel option to fix it for me today.

I did the same but my issue is still there.. What firmware is on your headset?

both headset and desktop app are on 33.something. However, it's not 100% Fixed. For MSFS2020 (MS Store version) it seems fixed, but I just played Euro Truck Simulator 2 on steam and there it appeared again. What I did change though is I disabled the steam start with windows, so when I played MSFS2020, steam was not running in the background. I am wondering if it has some relation to steam, and maybe more specific to the beta oculus version of ETS2 which works outside of steamVR.

Do more of you have ETS2? And is the issue also present when using Airlink?

As I described I only recently encountered this issue (again) and I my case it seems the beta update was to blame.  Although this will probably not be the issue for everyone it can maybe help pinpointing the culprit. Maybe you can try a different Oculus software version? Some people have locked their version to an older version for various reasons, and they might need to update to the latest stable version. I would at least suggest everyone to check their software version and maybe reinstall the oculus software on their pc since it seems to be coming from there. Not cooling, not steamvr and not the cable.

In my case, this problem appeared for the first time early this year, during the release of V24 (in beta).
Like you, I unchecked this box which had the effect of making me return to V23, I was then able to play for about fifty hours without ever having the problem.
Immediately after the V24 became official (impossible to block the update), the problem returned after 5 minutes of gaming.
I'm interested in how to install an older version and stay there, V23 wasn't a problem for me, if I could go back to it, it would be fine for me.

I started getting this problem a few days ago when I switched my GPU from a GTX 1080 to an RTX 3060. after reading through this reddit thread with similar reports, it seems the Nvidia 30-series may be the culprit? anyone here getting the issue consistently on a Nvidia 10-series or 20-series?

This time I had the issue with my RTX3080, but previously it was an AMD RX580.

I gave up. I just posted my quest 2 for sale on offerup. after spending 2 weeks trying every solution possible, reinstalling windows 10, installing 11, resetting the headset, updating drivers, downgrading drivers, all combinations in oculus debug tool and OTT, buying a powered USB hub, testing multiple cables, etc I was losing my mind with this **bleep**. Enough. I shouldn't be all this stressed because of the incompetence of a company. I'll just wait for the new Valve Deckard and F* you facebook

I now see that openxr has always been updated a couple of days ago.... **bleep**, why all at the same time. That makes trouble shooting nearly impossible.
