White horizontal stripe across screen while using link

Headset seems to work fine stand-alone.  I use the headset with IRacing, and often (not always) get a translucent horizontal stripe across the screen after about 15 minutes or so.  It doesn't feel like the headset is overheating.  This doesn't show up on the screen mirror on PC, or if I "mirror" with the debug tool.  Is this likely a failing display or is there somewhere else I should look?

UPDATE: POSSIBLE WORKAROUND/FIX USING REGISTRY EDITOR

As I theorized above, this issue does NOT occur for those who use Air Link. Air Link uses HEVC and uses 1 slice for its encoding, whereas wired Link uses H.264 and 5 slices for encoding. Whenever the white bar issue occurs, it is very likely the final 5th slice experiencing an error in the encoding. If you pay close attention when this occurs, you will likely notice it only occurs in the bottom slice of the screen.

To use this workaround, open Command Prompt and use the following:

  • reg add "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Oculus\RemoteHeadset" /v "numSlices" /t REG_DWORD /d "1" /f

I will be experimenting with this for the next few weeks to make sure  I do not get the white bar issue!

Original Post on REVISITED thread:

I have noticed that this is related to the horizontal encoding slices that are visible only through the Link Cable. A very easy stopgap solution would be to offer a toggle in the OculusDebugTool that allows us to turn OFF these encoding slices. Additionally, the encoding slices do not appear with Air Link and thus the issue has almost never occurred wirelessly according to both personal experience and these threads.

I have the same problem more and more often, just got it on Star Wars Squadron using Quest 2 with oculus link, native oculus API (no steamVR)

interesting. would it be safe to assume SteamVR has nothing to do with the issue? πŸ€”

Nothing to do with it. I have uninstalled Steam VR and it still happens.

Hi everyone! Don't get too excited yet, but I THINK I found the solution.
First of all I was having the same problem as you, and I tried everything... Reinstalling applications, changing cable, changing USB ports, different graphics settings, changing bitrate... But no matter what I did, I would always get the white stripe in the bottom half of the display in the first 10 minutes of gameplay, in any game while using link, both on steamVR and oculus.

My setup: Ryzen 5 3600, RTX 3070, 16 GB RAM
Now the solution: As I saw that a lot of people started to have this problem with new version of oculus software, I thought it must be something wrong with new versions. So I downloaded v24 of oculus software. Thnx to guy ''huliqan'' from this post https://forums.oculusvr.com/t5/Oculus-Rift-S-and-Rift/v25-PTC-PC-Software-Release-Notes/m-p/848372/highlight/true#M27767

What I did:

1)  Delete Oculus tray tool if you have it (i don't know if it matters, but that's what i did)

2) Download https://drive.google.com/file/d/1H_Sgam3hVAtDFPajTu7ZcpUqSrEh681D/view?usp=sharing

3) Stop OVRService - (ctrl+alt+delete -> Task manager -> find OVRService -> right click Stop

4) Go to C:\Program Files\Oculus\Support, and rename folder Support to Support-backup or something

5) Export downloaded Support folder to C:\Program Files\Oculus\

6) Start OVRService

7) Create text file named ''tmp'' and ''Staging'' in C:\Program Files\Oculus\, then enable file extensions and delete .txt extension from both files

😎 Run oculus link, set up your preferred resolution, and test your games.

Last night I tested ETS2, Skyrim VR, Assetto corsa, Dirt Rally, DCS world, for about 3 hours and the white stripe never appeared, and I have even better performance than with the last update!!!

BTW there are 2 problems in this version: I don't have sound from my Quest 2, just some kind of click every second, so I'm forced to mute Quest and use Bluetooth headphones. Second problem is that you can't use Air Link, because I think it didn't exist in v24.

So I hooooope that solved the problem and hope that will solve it for you too, because I know how frustrating it is.
Please test some games and let me know if this helped you, so we can say that we have some kind of fix.
If this helps you, please share it to other people that have the same problem and keep making tickets, because this is not really a solution. We need to make Oculus fix this problem, because apparently the problem is in Oculus software update.
Good luck!

Hi SerHyo, thanks for posting this!
From an Oculus support perspective, I think its really important that this is identified as a workaround rather than a fix or a solution, so that the development team keep this on their radar for a fix.

That said, it looks like the most promising approach so far, as it will take the systems back to a point before the update that broke the link. I am hopeful it will get us up and running for the types of games many in this post want to play!
So thank you for this, and for such a thorough writeup - I'll be trying this over the weekend and will report back. πŸ™‚

I promised a poem for meaningful fixes, but you get one too for a strong and feasible workaround!

"There once was a legend called SerHyo,
Whose Quest 2, when gaming, went err, no.
They saw the white bar,
and then like a star
rolled back the crap code like a pro, yo!"

Of course, I agree it's rather a workaround than solution or fix, because we can't use AirLink and there is a problem with sound. I use my link cable to play simulation games when I'm seated in front of my wheel or HOTAS, but I really like the AirLink when I'm playing  Skyrim VR, Onward, Blade & Sorcery... So I would like to be able to switch between the two πŸ™‚

That's why I said that people should continue to write tickets and ask for a real fix from the oculus. Because I think this is a real problem, that already takes too long to be resolved, and so much people are affected by it.
Btw nice poem XD ❀️

Thanks a lot SerHyo for your post about the workaround which is working for you.

I'm not sure I will try it, because the problem appeared for the first time with V24 release (for me), I had no issue with V23, but It started with V24...

I would have to find a way to return to V23, airlink is perfect from time to time, but I use my Quest 2 statically much more often for flight or driving simulators, and in this case I much prefer to be linked by cable. So going back to an old version is not a problem for me.

I've been using the Virtual Desktop app (from the Quest app store) to make an AirLink-like connection to my PC and play my Steam VR games. I have not had the white stripe issue pop up and have played for 2-3 hours non-stop at times. no noticeable lag/delay (40ms) and pretty good visual clarity (120fps). honestly, I can barely tell the difference between this and the official Oculus Link. I still keep my Quest tethered through a cable for prolonged battery life, though. sure, it's not a fix or a solution, but it's an alternative for now. at least I can play my games again! πŸ˜… hope this helps somehow.

I should mention: I used a tutorial on YouTube on how to find my optimal settings for a high framerate and minimal delay.

Yes, but I think nobody has problem with this while playing on VD or AirLink . This happens only when using link cable.
Thank you for the tutorial, I will check it out since virtual desktop has really poor quality in my case.

Hello ! Nobody is helping me , my oculus quest 2 display is broken , what I can do ? I can repair ?

Ok something to check: Is your link cable running close to power chords or extensions or anything? Mine was running over an extension chord thingie, and since I lead the cable away from it my white bar hasn't shown in 45 minutes of playing PC2. Of course a bit short to make any conclusions but it's worth checking. Could be an interferance issue.

mine is not getting any power interference from any extention cords or anything but i am still esperiencing the issue. 😞

I can confirm the workaround does work i have been playing no issues at all for the last 4 hours :D!! however microphone does not function at all and there is a clicking in audio as previously stated. i have a support case with oculus atm, im going to send them logs from this workaround and then they can compare them to logs for current version and fingers crossed they can find something between them to pinpoint this issue!!

Participant

Awesome!!! It's good news that this also works for somebody else! As I said there are problems with this workaround, it's not perfect, but at least we can play with link!!! πŸ˜„
The workaround that I posted is just an old version of oculus app, and then the two files that you created in the folder are there just to block it from updating, but you should be able to update your apps and games normally.
I also did not have a problem since, so I think we can say that there is obviously a problem in oculus app with newer versions... So it's nice to hear  you started a support case. I hope that they will listen and use the information you have to give them to solve the problem as soon as possible.

for everyones knowledge... this may or may not be related to the striping issue but i also noted that my oculus link is stuck at 72HZ no matter what option i select in Oculus app. can someone here with the issue open the debug tool performance overlay and confirm theres is also showing as 72 hz regardless of selection? 120HZ mode worked fine with workaround which i why i suspect this may be part of the cause.

Participant

So after 24+ hours of solid tweaking and testing and all round pulling my hair out... i have found a way to downgrade the oculus software to V24 like in serhyo's post but also fix the audio and microphone issues whilst allowing 120HZ mode if required (though I recomend sticking to 90HZ as its far more stable). You do loose the abilty to run via Airlink (currently bugged on build v33 and wont run more than 72HZ anyways) but frankly Virtual desktop is tons better anyway and has alot more to offer including abilty to watch 3D films, etc!!!

Please follow steps as per below.

1)  Turn on Public Test Channel in beta tab in oculus PC app settings, once the update have finished reboot your PC.

2)  Once reboot is complete turn off the PTC and let oculus update back to V33 but this time DO NOT REBOOT YOUR PC,

3) Download https://drive.google.com/file/d/1H_Sgam3hVAtDFPajTu7ZcpUqSrEh681D/view?usp=sharing

4) Stop OVRService - (ctrl+alt+delete -> Task manager -> find OVRService -> right click Stop

5) Go to C:\Program Files\Oculus\Support, and rename folder Support to Support-backup.

6) Export the downloaded Support folder from step 3 to C:\Program Files\Oculus\

7) Create a text file using notepad named ''tmp'' and move it into C:\Program Files\Oculus\, then enable file extensions under the view tab in windows explorer and delete .txt extension from the file. (staging file is not needed, aslong as you have the "tmp" files in this directory it will stop automatic updates.)

7) Start OVRService again.

8)Open the oculus app, you should get a red banner appear at the top of the window telling you to "update the drivers" for oculus to run your hardware properly. Go ahead and click the button and let oculus app run its driver update. Once this is done go ahead and reboot your PC again. *It's vital you restart your PC before the next steps or this may not work!!!*

9)  Open device manager and navigate to sound, video and game controllers, click the arrow to open the list of devices.

10) Right click on "Oculus Virtual Audio Device" and then click update driver. Click search automatically for driver and let the update process complete. Once this is finished, windows should prompt you to reboot to finish installing the new driver. Let it reboot once again.

11) Enjoy playing VR games again with fully functioning audio and a working mic!!! πŸ™‚

This should work for all affected users providing you follow the steps, I just finished playing 3 hours in Phasmophobia with no visual, audio or microphone issues. I even managed to avoid death during a hunt! Yay me!!!

I really hope this helps and please post to this forum your results and let us know if this worked for you.

I have given Oculus support all of the following information above in hopes they can use it to help figure out the bigger issue. But for now this should get most of us running again untill Oculus finally pull thier finger out and get us a permenant solution!

I forgot to add a note to my previous post. Oculus home will initially be broken/will not load in after this workaround is applied. If you care about home/want to use it again then navigate into the support folder and delete the "Oclulus-worlds" folder and "oclulus-words.zip" file. Then you just need to copy your "Oclulus-worlds" folder from your support-backup folder and paste it back into the support folder. You will need to make sure oclulus service is stopped before you start deleting and moving folders, but make sure you do this after following all the steps in the previous post first! Once you are finished you can restart the service and when you use link again, Oculus home will load up as normal :).

Come on Oculus...fix whatever this issue is please.  I shouldn't have to stop updates and revert back to software from a year ago to fix massive screen tearing for me....it was unplayable, it would refresh the screen when I look around, absolutely unplayable.  Yes airlink works but airlink does not look anywhere near as good, the resolution drops every 5 seconds even with fixed bitrate and I have a dedicated 5 GHz router, within 5 feet.

I went back to v30 just now and it was still present, which is weird because I haven't had any problems like this since originally doing it last November or something, around v25.  It only started happening again since this new update about two weeks ago.  Going back all the way to v24 , today,  fixed mine.  No more screen tearing but now we we don't have airlingk and are missing any of the other newer features but at least it works for now over cable.  Thx FYTE and yeah, it absolutely is software related...it almost looked like my display was going out but I knew it wasn't.

You can use virtual desktop to play wirelessly, it’s much better than airlink and gives an image almost as good as wired! I highly recommend. (Does cost a few quid for it though)

As good as wired? VD has more encode noise than Air Link. Because VD is only 150Mbps. Air Link can handle over 200Mbps. Wired Link can handle over 1Gbps.
