White horizontal stripe across screen while using link

Headset seems to work fine stand-alone.  I use the headset with IRacing, and often (not always) get a translucent horizontal stripe across the screen after about 15 minutes or so.  It doesn't feel like the headset is overheating.  This doesn't show up on the screen mirror on PC, or if I "mirror" with the debug tool.  Is this likely a failing display or is there somewhere else I should look?

UPDATE: POSSIBLE WORKAROUND/FIX USING REGISTRY EDITOR

As I theorized above, this issue does NOT occur for those who use Air Link. Air Link uses HEVC and uses 1 slice for its encoding, whereas wired Link uses H.264 and 5 slices for encoding. Whenever the white bar issue occurs, it is very likely the final 5th slice experiencing an error in the encoding. If you pay close attention when this occurs, you will likely notice it only occurs in the bottom slice of the screen.

To use this workaround, open Command Prompt and use the following:

  • reg add "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Oculus\RemoteHeadset" /v "numSlices" /t REG_DWORD /d "1" /f

I will be experimenting with this for the next few weeks to make sure  I do not get the white bar issue!

Original Post on REVISITED thread:

I have noticed that this is related to the horizontal encoding slices that are visible only through the Link Cable. A very easy stopgap solution would be to offer a toggle in the OculusDebugTool that allows us to turn OFF these encoding slices. Additionally, the encoding slices do not appear with Air Link and thus the issue has almost never occurred wirelessly according to both personal experience and these threads.

Downgrading to v24 fixes the issue for me, kudos to fyte for his efforts when the oculus tech support team has no solution on this for an year.

Back to v24 is joke for me. It's so blurry now.

I had this problem at the start of the year and I replaced my motherboard and the line disappeared, I then later updated my 2080ti to a 3080ti and the line came back so haven't touched my Quest 2 in months as I just couldn't be bothered with it, after trying fyte's suggested fix the line has been gone all day. I do think I somehow messed up the steps as still have V33 but it removed the Oculus home feature and I haven't seen any indication of the line showing up even after multiple PC restarts just to make sure. Thanks again fyte.

MetaStoreHelp I've recorded the video of this issue. It would be more than appreciated if you finally do something with it. More than 50 pages written by frustrated users, nearly a year not fixed critical issue. We have now a strong evidence, that the issue started with v25 or v26. See the workaround guide here: https://forums.oculusvr.com/t5/Oculus-Quest-2-and-Quest/White-horizontal-stripe-across-screen-while-using-link/m-p/891732/highlight/true#M43921

Yep, that's exactly what I see.  I'm also getting flickering, screen tears and the image on the screen jumps.  It's very disorienting.  It starts after about ten minutes and keeps getting worse after time goes on.  Then I finally get the dreaded white bar.  I've tried many different combination of settings, including turning all of the settings all the way down.  Nothing has worked.  I tried Virtual Desktop today and while I don't get the same quality image it is at least stable. MetaStoreHelp , it's pretty bad when I have to go to a third party to get your headset to work.  It's unbelievable that Oculus and Facebook have let this go on as long as it has.  MetaStoreHelp, if we don't get some real action soon I will be contacting Facebook corporate.  If you won't help us maybe they will.  FYI, I've submitted three support cases on this.  On the last one I was told that no one else has been experiencing this issue even though I referenced this thread on two separate occasions.  I again provided them the link to this thread and they came back and said they are backlogged and would get back to me when they are able.  If they are busy why have they pumped out nine major version releases since this problem started?  I think it was nine anyway.  So they've given me the runaround yet again.  As I said my next contact will be Facebook corporate so MetaStoreHelp I suggest you provide us real and meaningful information on what you are doing to resolve this.

Add me to the list of complainers when you call corporate. I am now getting the same β€œwe are back logged with tickets and will answer you when possible” which basically means we don’t know what else to say to you and have put you on the ignore/mute list. I’ve had better customer service from the lions at the zoo!!! All it takes is someone from

support with half a brain cell to see that we have done the hard work in diagnosing this issue and take it to the right higher ups to have it investigated.

Anyone else in here tried the PTC v35 software yet and can confirm the issue has been fixed for them?

Hey everyone just wanted to clarify is there an actual fix for this White/pink line while using Link?

Hi Slav, there is no actual fix for this issue at this stage. However I have created a β€œworkaround” guide which can get you up and running again! which is a few pages back. And also

linked a couple of times by other posters. You can’t miss it though it’s a huge single post with a step to step guide πŸ™‚

Hi Fyte, I have found it and I'm currently on step 9-10. On step 10 when I click "update driver" then "search automatically for driver" It says  "The best drivers for your device are already installed"

I'm guessing this means I'm fine and I can skip this step and just restart my PC. I hope so. Let me know if I'm wrong though xD.

Thank you!

I was able to get rid of the issue simply by updating to PTC.  It's weird though, the update it pushed says Version 34.0 (note 34.0 was already installed from release channel).  Is it possible that there is a new fix on PTC that might address this issue?

Some people have tried the PTC including myself with no joy! Count yourself lucky!!!

You know I said last week that I had success with the PTC?

Well I was about 2 hours into a new game (Into the radius) and suddenly the lines came back. Consistently getting them everywhere again :'(

Time to downgrade the Oculus app after all...

Happy Birthday !!!

Yes it's a special day today, special because this topic is 1 year old.

Yes 1 year since this issue was first reported, 1 year since Quest 2 owners have had a problem with their headset, and nothing has changed.

Well that's not quite correct because if this problem was seen over a year ago, it was probably a single case that maybe did not have the same origin, because people started to show up for this problem in January 2021, just after the release of the V24 Beta and V25 of Oculus link, the versions with which this defect happened.

So "Happy Birthday" to all, after 1 year of vacation, we can hope that at Oculus they start to work a little to solve the problems that customers have with their equipment ...

I feel like I owe it to the community to update my findings. Not a lot of people come back to a forum to help others when they find a solution to a problem that themselves and many others are having.

I was encountering issue with horizontal line artifacting in iracing. I downgraded my software and it worked but I didn’t really like it as the display was much much darker than the up to date firmware and I lost air link. So I upgraded again.

reinstalled windows, same problem

i bought another cable, same problem

I then decided to upgrade my PC to help with VR performance (not trying to solve artifacting issue, just wanted my performance in general)

i upgraded only my motherboard and CPU and nothing else. I went from a MSI Z170 basic board and 6600k to a B460 and 10400

i’ve been playing iracing on Anker link cable for 2 days and I have no horizontal line artifact link screen.

Seems like the issue is a compatibility issue with certain hardware and the oculus software.

I believe my issue is fixed, normally the artifacting would appear within 10 minutes of gameplay. Now it doesn’t appear at all!

hope this helps

if you have the money, try another brand motherboard would be my suggestion

good luck
