White horizontal stripe across screen while using link

Headset seems to work fine stand-alone.  I use the headset with IRacing, and often (not always) get a translucent horizontal stripe across the screen after about 15 minutes or so.  It doesn't feel like the headset is overheating.  This doesn't show up on the screen mirror on PC, or if I "mirror" with the debug tool.  Is this likely a failing display or is there somewhere else I should look?

UPDATE: POSSIBLE WORKAROUND/FIX USING REGISTRY EDITOR

As I theorized above, this issue does NOT occur for those who use Air Link. Air Link uses HEVC and uses 1 slice for its encoding, whereas wired Link uses H.264 and 5 slices for encoding. Whenever the white bar issue occurs, it is very likely the final 5th slice experiencing an error in the encoding. If you pay close attention when this occurs, you will likely notice it only occurs in the bottom slice of the screen.

To use this workaround, open Command Prompt and use the following:

  • reg add "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Oculus\RemoteHeadset" /v "numSlices" /t REG_DWORD /d "1" /f

I will be experimenting with this for the next few weeks to make sure  I do not get the white bar issue!

Original Post on REVISITED thread:

I have noticed that this is related to the horizontal encoding slices that are visible only through the Link Cable. A very easy stopgap solution would be to offer a toggle in the OculusDebugTool that allows us to turn OFF these encoding slices. Additionally, the encoding slices do not appear with Air Link and thus the issue has almost never occurred wirelessly according to both personal experience and these threads.

MetaStoreHelp I've recorded another video of this issue for you. I've also sent logs to the support again (third time total). I hope that dummy chat bots will not ignore it this time and forward it to devs. Let's see the video, how annoying the PCVR experience with the Quest 2 is. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NBb0kkE9pEM

Guys, please retweet/comment/like my tweet to make us more visible. I think it's really important to spread it on social networks to make Oculus take it seriously. Tag your favourite VR YouTubers, VR magazines... Together, we can make it! https://twitter.com/stepansonsky/status/1460374719845310473

I had this issue for few months. I did all fix I found in Internet. Nothing helps.

Recently I had to change motherboard and I install fresh system. Win 11. Now everything works fine. No more pink line.

Amazing.

I had the issue on Win 10 and I have it on Win 11. Using default settings, white stripe appears very soon, after few minutes. But I've found settings which seems to be really stable in my case and the white stripe appears only time to time. But it's still very annoying bug.

I've replaced my complete system last spring, except GPU, PSU and SSD.

I replaced an Intel 7820X CPU by an AMD 5800X one, X299 chipset by B550, and I still have the issue.

If replacing the MB had a positive effect for YOU, I'm happy for you, but's not the solution for everyone, and not a solution at all. People should not have to replace a MB because of a "biiiiippp" software !

And replacing your MB maybe fixed momentarily your issue, like many who think they have found a solution after modifying something, we end up seeing them come back here one day or another...

Hey there jereme.powers, We always want to make sure players can play the games they want. We'll do our absolute best to you back into the game again and get your Oculus experience up to 100%! Below I've outlined some troubleshooting steps you could try to ease any potential link issues.

Are there any updates to Windows/GPU/USB?

Sometimes there may be outdated drivers or pending updates that could interfere with the Link and its performance. I've included a guide on how to check for updates to your drivers here! The article is titled for Rift/Rift S but applies to Quest/Quest 2 as well.

For Windows, there's an article on how to check for updates here!

If updates are found for either, make sure you restart your PC once they are complete, then try to use Link again.

Game Mode may conflict with some VR applications.

In Windows 10, there is a feature called "Game Mode". Game Mode appears to reduce or eliminate background processes and focuses performance on the active game. This could interfere with the Oculus software, as it needs multiple processes running simultaneously to function properly. Try disabling Game Mode, then attempt using Link again.

  • Open the Windows Settings menu
  • Click on Gaming
  • Click Game Mode
  • Toggle Game Mode off

Submit a Support Ticket.

Collect Oculus Diagnostic Logs and submit them in a support ticket here so that we may look over them and confirm any conflicting software, PC/System updates and inconsistencies.

If you have any questions, we'd be happy to help! Cheers!

This is typical Oculus. They have no interest in actually helping their customes. I've had three open cases on this issue and all they did was ask the above questions (which points fingers at everyone but themselves) and when the only possible root cause is something with them they just disappear. If anything the problems with the Oculus has gotten worse over time, not better. I'm now using Virtual Desktop, bypassing Link altogether. I've had zero issues for two weeks and the quality is as good as Link. I had to buy a WiFi 6 router to get the graphics quality I was looking for but at least it works. I'll be buying a new headset from another company as soon as I can afford it. Oculus, do not contact me like you did with Jereme Powers and follow the same stupid script. Actually get someone on the phone that can actually help or lose myself and many others as customers.

I think... I feel Reality Lab knows this problem. But they don't fix. I don't know why. To be honest, Link has many problems simply. It's been two years since release, but there is still no end to the number of people who have trouble starting and connecting Link. Also, I'm not sure why it's consuming so much VRAM. It's interesting that personally made VD is much lower load & much more stable.

Just upgraded to a Q2 from my CV1 and this keeps happening.  Within 5 minutes of trying to play Beat Saber(tried with all mods off).  The translucent effect faintly shows up and gets increasingly worse until it is very white. Tried changing all settings and without any overclocking and the problem persists. Might just end up returning it if it's this hard to use link cable successfully...

See below 🙂 I have reposted my workaround so you can use link again as intended.

Now I am in contact with oculus support about this issue just in case this workaround does not work for me is there anybody who had this issue and got a replacement from oculus? Of you did did it work or not I'm trying to see if will just return. Also Fyte I also sent oculus support a link for your workaround maybe they can find something to fix this permanently.

I joined this thread back in March with my 2070 Super, now I have a $2k 3080 and have the same problem but with much better resolution and fps. In all these months I haven't seen/heard any acknowledgement or commitment from Oculus. I also ordered the silicon cover in July, and despite direct messaging and opening a ticket, have yet to receive the covers nor a reply from Oculus support; actually not true, their respond robot did send me a copy and paste of the shipping web page terms as a resolution before they closed the ticket.

My solution was to spend another $250 and buy a wifi6 so I can use airplay, my computer, my headset and my router are 2' from each other. Basically a $250 USB cable so I can play flight sim on a $5k computer using a $450 headset. And another $50 on Amazon for silicon cover so I don't break out like a 50 year old teenager. I feel like Oculus was a small R&D company, all of a sudden Facebook pushed them to the spot lite, they have to meet sales quotes but get no support from head office. Now half a dozen outsourced "support staff" in India are tasked to copy and paste scripts as replies to posts sent to them by a robo-scanner; while the Oculus staff are frantically trying to beat the last sales quota so Facebook (Meta) doesn't just close them down and starts another brand (like Facebook to Meta.)

BTW don't expect You-tubers and reviewers to help. They bill themselves as Journalists but they are teenagers making money off clicks and freebies. The only time they pretend to stand up to their suppliers is when some random Tweet or Reddit post goes viral and now they can use that as an excuse to be righteous defenders of consumer rights; they are pretending of course and one half-hearted apology from a random rep and they are done with that click-bate.

Prove me wrong!

Thank you for reading my rant, I was feeling left out and thought to (re-) add my voice.

Later Alligator

Hi all, for those coming to this post looking for a solution to the issue... oculus have yet to find a working solution to this ongoing issue. Please follow the guide I have made below to revert your oculus PC software back to version 24 which will fix the issue and allow you to use your Q2 on pc again. Big thanks and credit to Serhyo who initally found this workaround. All I did was find a way to fix the sound/mic issue and refine the guide/method to ensure a functioning downgrade everytime. 🙂

So after 24+ hours of solid tweaking and testing and all round pulling my hair out... i have found a way to downgrade the oculus software to V24 like in serhyo's post but also fix the audio and microphone issues whilst allowing 120HZ mode if required (though I recomend sticking to 90HZ as its far more stable). You do loose the abilty to run via Airlink (currently bugged on build v33 and wont run more than 72HZ anyways) but frankly Virtual desktop is tons better anyway and has alot more to offer including abilty to watch 3D films, etc!!!

Please follow steps as per below.

1)  Turn on Public Test Channel in beta tab in oculus PC app settings, once the update have finished reboot your PC.

2)  Once reboot is complete turn off the PTC and let oculus update back to V33 but this time DO NOT REBOOT YOUR PC,

3) Download https://drive.google.com/file/d/1H_Sgam3hVAtDFPajTu7ZcpUqSrEh681D/view?usp=sharing

4) Stop OVRService - (ctrl+alt+delete -> Task manager -> find OVRService -> right click Stop

5) Go to C:\Program Files\Oculus\Support, and rename folder Support to Support-backup.

6) Export the downloaded Support folder from step 3 to C:\Program Files\Oculus\

7) Create a text file using notepad named ''tmp'' and move it into C:\Program Files\Oculus\, then enable file extensions under the view tab in windows explorer and delete .txt extension from the file. (staging file is not needed, aslong as you have the "tmp" files in this directory it will stop automatic updates.)

7.5) Start OVRService again.

8)Open the oculus app, you should get a red banner appear at the top of the window telling you to "update the drivers" for oculus to run your hardware properly. Go ahead and click the button and let oculus app run its driver update. Once this is done go ahead and reboot your PC again. *It's vital you restart your PC before the next steps or this may not work!!!*

9)  Open device manager and navigate to sound, video and game controllers, click the arrow to open the list of devices.

10) Right click on "Oculus Virtual Audio Device" and then click update driver. Click search automatically for driver and let the update process complete. Once this is finished, windows should prompt you to reboot to finish installing the new driver. Let it reboot once again.

11) Enjoy playing VR games again with fully functioning audio and a working mic!!!

Oculus home will initially be broken/will not load in after this workaround is applied. If you care about home/want to use it again then navigate into the support folder and delete the "Oclulus-worlds" folder and "oclulus-words.zip" file. Then you just need to copy your "Oclulus-worlds" folder from your support-backup folder and paste it back into the support folder. You will need to make sure oclulus service is stopped before you start deleting and moving folders, but make sure you do this after following all the steps above first! Once you are finished you can restart the Oculus service and when you use link again, Oculus home will load up as normal :).

This should work for all affected users providing you follow the steps exactly as posted, I have been using this workaround for weeks with 0 problems and have been enjoying all my PC VR games again since bfore this issue occured. This workaround has been tested and works for both a RTX 20 & RTX 30 series graphics card owners. It should also work for any ATI users suffering this issue but do not own an ATI graphics card so I cannot test this to confirm.

I really hope this helps and please post to this forum your results and let us know if this worked for you. The more people who let me know this has worked for them, the more evidence I have to give to Oculus support to finaly make them see the issue lies with there software and look into what changed between V24 and V25 to brake this. But for now this should get most of us running again untill Oculus finally pull thier finger out and get us a permenant solution!

This seemed to fix the purple/pink/white horizontal lines at the bottom of my lenses and I can finally use Oculus Link to play my games now thanks a lot.

I had this kind of glitch once I've tryed custom encoding resolution. Reverting to default values fix the issue.

I'm pretty sure that after v23 any custom encode resolution is totally useless, as default are the best optimized that quest can handle, and now can cause more harm than benefits.

Reverting to default values don't fix the issue for all of us.

In my case, I've reinstalled Windows on a brand new computer, with everything by default, the issue is there...
