White horizontal stripe across screen while using link

Headset seems to work fine stand-alone.  I use the headset with IRacing, and often (not always) get a translucent horizontal stripe across the screen after about 15 minutes or so.  It doesn't feel like the headset is overheating.  This doesn't show up on the screen mirror on PC, or if I "mirror" with the debug tool.  Is this likely a failing display or is there somewhere else I should look?

UPDATE: POSSIBLE WORKAROUND/FIX USING REGISTRY EDITOR

As I theorized above, this issue does NOT occur for those who use Air Link. Air Link uses HEVC and uses 1 slice for its encoding, whereas wired Link uses H.264 and 5 slices for encoding. Whenever the white bar issue occurs, it is very likely the final 5th slice experiencing an error in the encoding. If you pay close attention when this occurs, you will likely notice it only occurs in the bottom slice of the screen.

To use this workaround, open Command Prompt and use the following:

  • reg add "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Oculus\RemoteHeadset" /v "numSlices" /t REG_DWORD /d "1" /f

I will be experimenting with this for the next few weeks to make sure  I do not get the white bar issue!

Original Post on REVISITED thread:

I have noticed that this is related to the horizontal encoding slices that are visible only through the Link Cable. A very easy stopgap solution would be to offer a toggle in the OculusDebugTool that allows us to turn OFF these encoding slices. Additionally, the encoding slices do not appear with Air Link and thus the issue has almost never occurred wirelessly according to both personal experience and these threads.

I think that because of the workaround, every 5 minutes the oculus service is poping something that is taking focus on windows for 1~2 seconds and bringing it back. Closing the oculus service fixed it for me, anyone else with this issue?

I had this issue recently. Seemed to only happen when the service was set to

boot up with windows but the oculus app was closed. And started after the last update to windows 10. I changed the service to manually start when I open oculus app and the problem has now resolved itself in general for me 🙂

I updated to Windows 11 and V35 and PCVR is now a nightmare with my Quest 2. I have the white stripe, I have to keep the oculus service console open and every 2-5 minutes the VR basically crashes with no error I simply see a flat picture of the game and the same picture but reversed in my back. Facebook and Microsoft are not doing anything to fix all the issues I think I will sell my Quest 2 and quit VR for a while.

Yeah this is clearly something software related is something with the Oculus software.   I just started getting the bar today and it got progressively worse the longer I played.  I was playing FO4 VR but switched to Skyrim VR and Pavlov.

However as soon as I switched to Virtual Desktop it didn't show up.

Update.  Ok so i went into the occulus debug tool and adjusted somethings.

1. Distortion Curve set to low

2. Encode Bitrate to 350 (i had this set to 350 last year at some point it got set to 0 or defult.  Not sure when this happened but it did)
3.  Link Sharpening Enabled

Not sure which of these three things fixed it but it works fine now.  My money would be on the bitrate.

you might be on to something. I tried this and played Beat Saber all night long without the white strip manifesting itself, whereas before it would show up within 30-40 minutes of play time. I will keep testing throughout the week.

Hi everyone. Here is the main i send to oculus support today.
I managed to get rid of the bug, using Airlink, but each of you does not necessarily have the means to do the same.
I invite you all to make a similar mailing campaign to the support, the youtubers ect in order to be heard. I do not have a good grasp of the tools of the Internet, but a mass movement can perhaps advance the problem.

Hello Oculus / meta / facebook

Here, it's been eight months that this bug was reported by me, more than a year that this bug occupies the number one place of your user forum, months that your updates follow one another without concern for this problem.
Rescue solutions have been found by forcing a return to V24 of your firmware; but in the meantime your technical service remains deaf and dumb.

For my part, I have to consider your VR solution unsuitable for the needs of my clients (Pilots / Real estate professionals / Virtual reality rooms) and must therefore cancel the pre-order of 750 planned units.
On the more personal side, I have to change my VR headset for a competitor as soon as possible and warn as many people as possible against this major defect that your company has deliberately ignored in your headset.
You had launched a revolutionary product on which you found it easier to neglect the PC and Simmer community. It is your choice and it is unfortunate.

If you choose to change your mind, there is still time to communicate on your forum with all the users who, moreover, have made good progress in identifying the problem.
Understand that as powerful as your company is, the competition grows fast and fiercely.
Generally speaking, players can pass the towel on a badly finished product, but rarely on a feeling of ignorance and contempt.

Yours truly "

Good luck to all

For anyone that's still having issues, try going into the Oculus Debug Tool and disable the "Encode Dynamic Bitrate", which I've found is set to default. I originally ignored this and left it as default because I thought it affected Air Link only since the Oculus Dash menu allows you to choose between fixed and dynamic. I'm running a 3080, so I've set the bitrate to 500 for now and the image quality is amazing. I haven't encountered any low compression bars or pink/white lines since doing this.

I will try it out. I hope that works because I changed wires and whatnot but the purple line still persists. Over a longer stint in i-racing this gets tiring and distracting.

Many thanks to fyte, manual starting the oculus service fixed the stripe in MSFS. In my case it appeared some seconds after changing to vr. Yesterday i played half an hour and no stripe 🙂
