White horizontal stripe across screen while using link

Headset seems to work fine stand-alone.  I use the headset with IRacing, and often (not always) get a translucent horizontal stripe across the screen after about 15 minutes or so.  It doesn't feel like the headset is overheating.  This doesn't show up on the screen mirror on PC, or if I "mirror" with the debug tool.  Is this likely a failing display or is there somewhere else I should look?

UPDATE: POSSIBLE WORKAROUND/FIX USING REGISTRY EDITOR

As I theorized above, this issue does NOT occur for those who use Air Link. Air Link uses HEVC and uses 1 slice for its encoding, whereas wired Link uses H.264 and 5 slices for encoding. Whenever the white bar issue occurs, it is very likely the final 5th slice experiencing an error in the encoding. If you pay close attention when this occurs, you will likely notice it only occurs in the bottom slice of the screen.

To use this workaround, open Command Prompt and use the following:

  • reg add "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Oculus\RemoteHeadset" /v "numSlices" /t REG_DWORD /d "1" /f

I will be experimenting with this for the next few weeks to make sure  I do not get the white bar issue!

Original Post on REVISITED thread:

I have noticed that this is related to the horizontal encoding slices that are visible only through the Link Cable. A very easy stopgap solution would be to offer a toggle in the OculusDebugTool that allows us to turn OFF these encoding slices. Additionally, the encoding slices do not appear with Air Link and thus the issue has almost never occurred wirelessly according to both personal experience and these threads.

After using the OG vive for many years i finally did upgrade to a Oculus Quest 2 + Oculus Link-cable.
I was really looking forward to play PCVR in good resolution and with better controllers. My dissapointment was huge when this horizontal stripe problem occured and after some searching i found out that there is really nothing i can do to fix it.

I can't use airlink because i can't get a cable from my router to my PC so here i am still playing on my vive..
Such a waste.

The problem comes and goes for me. I have a feeling that exiting to the game menu or desktop back and forth too many times exacerbates the problem. Lately, it's been ok I guess, when I have the problem I just restart the link connect from the Oculus home and it seem to be fine for a while. Still, they need a real fix for this, NOW!

I can't believe they have done nothing about this. A year and a half and nothing.

Does anyone know if they even acknowledge the problem?

I've contacted the Support on Twitter and got a very quick response. I explained the issue and pointed towards this thread, which they pretty obviously opened.

As soon as they read the name of one of the games here, they responded "We're sorry that you have problem with Game X".

So I explained it again.

They were asking for my account details afterwards which I didn't bother to answer because I didn't want to go through another tiresome callservice like " have you turned the device on/off?" procedure.

Maybe if you guys start messaging them there too, we could finally get their attention.

I have been in contact with them for 4 months now. If I had a dollar for every time they sent me a copy/paste response and forgot to change the "X", I'd be sitting comfy.

I hate to say it, but you're wasting your time talking to customer support. Nothing you say or do will get through to them. There's a reason they have an F rating on the Better Business Bureau.

I Think i fixet it. I took bitrate to 350 and but distortion curvature to low, encode resolution to 0 on debug-tool. And make sure to take The power plan on your pc to maximum performens. Im still testing it out. But just played for an hour whitout The White Line.

I found a solution!

For me anyways.

I have had a white horizontal stripe across the bottom of my quest 2 screen whenever I tried to play games via rift link cable (happened more often during high intensive games or situations). I talked to support for a long time and they concluded it had to be the cable (which is not of the Oculus brand), and as I diden't want to buy an expensive usb-c cable when i already had one (that wasn't faulty, i did tests), I decided to just not use my Oculus quest 2.

Later, I found out that my graphics card (3080) was placed in the pci-e 4x slot instead of the 16x slot. I thought that maybe my Quest 2 wasn't receiving enough bandwith data since 4x (third generation) was quite low for a 3080. So, I changed my 3080 to the other slot and I have not had any issues with this stripe since then. I have not played for that long since this change, but more than enough for the stripe to usually appear.

So, if you are still having this issue, try checking if your GPU is getting enough bandwith. Given the nature of this issue, I think it has something to do with the communication between the GPU and the VR headset (in my case there wasn't enough communication). My solution to the problem supports this hypothesis.

I have seen a lot of different solutions to this issue, some work for some, others work for others. So, it is unfortunatly unlikely that everybody in here doesn't have enough bandwith, and that this is a universal fix. But i hope this helps atleast somebody.

My 3080 is in pci-e 16x slot, fresh install of occulus app, factory reset of the headset, new gpu driver, downgrad of graphical setting in game and in occulus app, 72,90,120hz etccc nothing change.

SERIOUSLY, 72 PAGES TALKING ABOUT THIS BIG PROBLEM AND OCCULUS DOESNT GIVE A F*** IT'S A SHAME !

Months ago I had the same problem. It disappeared when following the steps to install version 24.

Now I don't know why it seems that the version installed on the PC is 24, and that of the Oculus is 40.

The cable does not allow me to connect the Oculus to the PC.

I've rebooted everything, and I'm running version 40 on Oculus and PC.
The cable now connects, but the white stripe problem returns.

I have tried to return to version 24, but the cable does not connect. Oculus is still at 40.

I have factory reset the Oculus and when I return they are still on 40, the cable does not connect.

I've restarted everything again, now Oculus and PC are at 40 and the white stripe appears after a minute and I have no way to remove it.

Is it no longer possible to leave Oculus and PC on the 24 and work without the white stripe?

**bleep** the moment I bought the Oculus, I had to buy the HP Revert G2.

Same here. Tried to downgrade my quest headset back to a previous firmware via the guide on the reddit wiki but cant get it to work. Patches fine but upon reboot it is still on v40.

Mine too. It's neither a hardware issue, nor software at the users. It's a bug in the oculus software which should be fixed. It's a shame it's still there after a support thread with 73 pages.

I must be close to 200 messages with Oculus support, they repeat their procedure like idiots robots asking me basic things like trying to update my GPU drivers.
It's been 17 months since most users know that the issue is related to Oculus link software issue.
I tried everything possible and/or described here, including complete new installations on 2 PCs with different hardware (but both in RTX 30X0 series).
And this problem was not present before the V25 version of Oculus link.

I've been assembling PCs for over 20 years, thanks for all the advice but if it was a problem with an outdated GPU driver, or a graphics card installed on a pcie 4X port, we wouldn't have 73 pages here and I would have solved the problem a long time ago by myself...

I will never buy anything from Oculus/Meta again, and that's a shame because their headset in standalone mode is rather an interesting product, but the behavior of this company which ignores the problems of its customers is unacceptable.

How about we all beg a few of the VR youtube channels to make a plea for help video. Maybe they can get the publicity we need for oculus to spend some resources to fix this.
