White horizontal stripe across screen while using link

Headset seems to work fine stand-alone.  I use the headset with IRacing, and often (not always) get a translucent horizontal stripe across the screen after about 15 minutes or so.  It doesn't feel like the headset is overheating.  This doesn't show up on the screen mirror on PC, or if I "mirror" with the debug tool.  Is this likely a failing display or is there somewhere else I should look?

UPDATE: POSSIBLE WORKAROUND/FIX USING REGISTRY EDITOR

As I theorized above, this issue does NOT occur for those who use Air Link. Air Link uses HEVC and uses 1 slice for its encoding, whereas wired Link uses H.264 and 5 slices for encoding. Whenever the white bar issue occurs, it is very likely the final 5th slice experiencing an error in the encoding. If you pay close attention when this occurs, you will likely notice it only occurs in the bottom slice of the screen.

To use this workaround, open Command Prompt and use the following:

  • reg add "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Oculus\RemoteHeadset" /v "numSlices" /t REG_DWORD /d "1" /f

I will be experimenting with this for the next few weeks to make sure  I do not get the white bar issue!

Original Post on REVISITED thread:

I have noticed that this is related to the horizontal encoding slices that are visible only through the Link Cable. A very easy stopgap solution would be to offer a toggle in the OculusDebugTool that allows us to turn OFF these encoding slices. Additionally, the encoding slices do not appear with Air Link and thus the issue has almost never occurred wirelessly according to both personal experience and these threads.

Haha, now the "support" bots are claiming that third party applications are unsupported over Link, and the Link cable is only for casting your gameplay to a PC. This is a direct quote:

"The Link cable is if you want to cast your gameplay to your computer which is great for streamers or if you have company over. It can also be used to access Rift games that are also compatible with the Quest 2."

Funny how their own store page contradicts this and how some of these unsupported games are sold on their own store.

It is pathetic that I find this thread from a google search of this exact issue 2 years later, without and easy fix available. Meta is going to stop supporting the Quest 2 only a couple years after release, to sell us newer headsets dedicated to PC gaming, soon to be released.

I feel that fixing the Quest 2 may not even be in their own business interest, in the near future, and that Oculus Link will never be perfected over it. It  was only testing ground.

*Sent from Oculus Link's desktop mirror, the bright white/purple shaded horizontal area covering the bottom 1/5 of my screen. Only happening for the first time in the last week, after a year.

My occulus software also updated, but still after 30 hours, the white bar didn't come back. I really hope that stays this way...

I did  few things like, changing the resolution, the bitrate in the developer tool and so on, getting back to standard settings etc.

Things that some people here said helped with their problem.

I can't shake off the feeling that one graphical setting is totally bugged and needs to be reseted/ changed in order to work properly.

I will not change any settings anymore.

I had this issue arise again yesterday and it was driving me nuts. I ended up uninstalling and reinstalling the Oculus app on PC and trying link out again. Still no change.

Finally I went back into the debug tool and set Encode Resolution Width to 3660 and thankfully that fixed it for me. It's crazy to see how widespread this issue is and how there can be some solutions that work, but plenty of others that don't help at all. This needs to be addressed by Meta in some way or another. I can't imagine dealing with this issue for as long as some of y'all have with a piece of equipment that costs $400+. Hope you guys find a solution that works for you too.

Seriously?  The same BS as before?  The only way I would contact you at this point is if I spoke directly with a developer.  I'm tired of this.  I'm happy to help you solve this issue but you will need to take meaningful steps to solve the problem.  Since it's been months since you posted on this forum I'll be pleasantly surprised if I get a response to this message.

I confirm. On i7-10700 RTX-3080 12Gb the same problem. There was no such problem when there was a GTX 1080. Drivers updated, windows reinstalled. (sorry, english not my language)

So I had this problem, with low frames, I have a 3060, 32 ram, and good stuff, but it turns out my motherboard was running bad so I replaced it, upgraded my storage to a m.2, and my graphics card was plugged into the bottom slot instead of top so I switch that to top becouse that one is a lot faster, and now it's working great, getting amazing frames and looks clean, so I would suggest to search. Vid and look at all your parts in your pc to fix and change some stuff or get it taken some where

Everyone, let us try a scientific experiment, and I'll pay for it.

I will build a brand new system, assembling the components myself, and will install Windows 11 on a new M.2 SSD.

I will not do anything but test VR games and apps over Oculus Link and AirLink.

I will try different default OpenXR options.

Let's see if I no longer have this issue.

Later on, I will compare my experience with Link to Virtual Desktop.

I have purchased the components for an entirely new PC. All modern parts, this year or last, which I can easily have replaced by the store I bought it from, in case of any malfunction or idea that malfunction is causing an issue with Oculus Link.

Theoretically, using this generations or the last's components on a fresh install of Windows 11 should make most of the suggestions to fix this issue moot.

This is better than a full system reset. The hard drive has only been formatted and partitioned, awaiting it's first ever OS install!

My Oculus Quest is not even a year old! Even if the plastic front strap loop broke while I was wearing the uncomfortable, expensive Official Oculus Elite Strap, I believe it's fair we do not use a fresh from the factory Meta Quest 2.

My biggest fear is that Meta will soon release a dedicated PC VR headset, which we will get no discount for.

Despite how many of us "helped to fix" the issues their next headset will not have.

Use windows 10, becouse windows 10 is more optimized and better then 11 right now, and windows 11 isn't that good with games yet, so go with 10 is ur best option

I agree, but since I'm going to be using Windows 11, and the person who finds this article 2 years from now will likely use Windows 11, I'm going to start with it. I can easily use a different SSD for Win 10, if I still have the issue.

I'm odly grateful that at least the issue doesn't seem to be permanent.

I feel bad for all the people who will think their Headset is broken, and give up using it without writing on these forums.

This is my first time “posting” anything since I’ve never been on this website but I was just in vr chat and all of a sudden it goes black so I take my headset off, then maybe 2 or 3 minutes pass and I see these white-greenish stripes all across my screen, I don’t know how to fix it, please help. OH and I’ve also tried turning it off, I’ve tapped the button once and held it and it still hasn’t turned off

Hello pearl_clouds. Thank you for reaching out to us. We understand that you're experiencing some display issues. Please try restarting your headset. If that doesn't correct it please perform a factory reset. We do recommend this as a last resort. If you're concerned about your purchased content  a factory reset won't remove content you've purchased or downloaded from your account. We also have cloud back up. When Cloud Backup is enabled, Oculus backs up your device’s app data, like game progress or game settings, to the cloud. This allows you to easily pick up where you left off in a game if you reinstall an app, reset your device, or set up a new device. If this issues persists please reach out. Here is link to our Support site. We're always here to help!
