White horizontal stripe across screen while using link

Headset seems to work fine stand-alone.  I use the headset with IRacing, and often (not always) get a translucent horizontal stripe across the screen after about 15 minutes or so.  It doesn't feel like the headset is overheating.  This doesn't show up on the screen mirror on PC, or if I "mirror" with the debug tool.  Is this likely a failing display or is there somewhere else I should look?

UPDATE: POSSIBLE WORKAROUND/FIX USING REGISTRY EDITOR

As I theorized above, this issue does NOT occur for those who use Air Link. Air Link uses HEVC and uses 1 slice for its encoding, whereas wired Link uses H.264 and 5 slices for encoding. Whenever the white bar issue occurs, it is very likely the final 5th slice experiencing an error in the encoding. If you pay close attention when this occurs, you will likely notice it only occurs in the bottom slice of the screen.

To use this workaround, open Command Prompt and use the following:

  • reg add "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Oculus\RemoteHeadset" /v "numSlices" /t REG_DWORD /d "1" /f

I will be experimenting with this for the next few weeks to make sure  I do not get the white bar issue!

Original Post on REVISITED thread:

I have noticed that this is related to the horizontal encoding slices that are visible only through the Link Cable. A very easy stopgap solution would be to offer a toggle in the OculusDebugTool that allows us to turn OFF these encoding slices. Additionally, the encoding slices do not appear with Air Link and thus the issue has almost never occurred wirelessly according to both personal experience and these threads.

bonjour,
CPU : I3
RAM 4 GO
cordialement

Hello,
I had trouble expressing myself I did not say to play in wifi but to do a wifi test of about 15 minutes or more or less for me I played 10 minutes and no problem arose.
to compare I did tests with a person from oculus who made me buy the game dirt rally 2.0
that I already had but with steam so exactly the same game as you so I bought on the oculus platform
and the problem did not happen even after a minute
so he saw that the problem was not with the game
finally I did several tests at home with the 980 Ti from my daughter's computer I put it in my computer
and the problem was still there
So conclusion: it is not a problem of the link or graphics card
So I pushed a little further
I installed the games on my daughter's pc which therefore has a 980Ti
CPU: I3
4 GB RAM
in short really nothing next to our
well the miracle no problem for 2 hours at least
So conclusion it's my pc that has a problem
not the graphics card that's on
so either motherboard or processor
and in conclusion are for my part the defective USB port
I had at home a Controller adapter 1 PCI-E ports to USB 2.0
therefore not USB 3.0 the software oculus recognizes me the cable but not in USB 3.0 therefore bad flow
and last night I decided to play dirt rally 2.0
and I played for 2 hours and more worries while before 1 or 2 minutes and the problem was back
so to finish and in conclusion
the only ones responsible for me: USB
I'm looking forward to the USB 3.0 controller I bought
it's up to you to see if you want to do the test or not c true me I have the fiber so a good flow
small precision as even the oculus platform made me buy dirt rally 2.0
but refunded it to me (really great from them)
cordially

I did i ticket of this problem, and I got this answer. Has Anyone tried this?

Thank you for reaching out to Oculus Suport.

We appreciate your patience and understanding as we have a delay in response due to quite volume of ticket we've been dealing with.

I understand that you are having issue on your Quest 2 headset screen with Oculus Link cable. Rest assured, I'd be more than glad to assist you to get this fixed.

I appreciate your effort trying to test the game if the issue will happen, providing the picture of the issue and explaining the situation while using the link cable.

For me to better assist you, I would like to ask if you have tried some other games using the headset with link cable to test if the issue will occur?

We can try to review the Oculus Link compatibility requirements by visiting our support article

Please try to follow the below troubleshooting steps to resolve the issue.:

  • Reboot the headset.
  • Ensure that you are using an NVIDIA GPU.
    • Determine if the computer has an NVIDIA GPU by using Device Manager
      • Locate “Display adapters“ and expand it
      • If any an item has NVIDIA in the title, then the computer has an NVIDIA GPU:
  • Ensure it is connecting to a USB 3 port
    • Once the Quest headset has been connected to the Oculus desktop app, the "Devices" menu will provide information regarding the connected USB port:
    • You may check the physical USB ports on the PC. USB 3 ports will be blue, or marked on the PC exterior as "SS" or "3.0
    • You can also use Device Manager to determine whether the PC has any USB 3.0 ports:
      • Locate and expand "Universal Serial Bus Controllers"
      • Look for any entry that has "USB 3.0" in the title
  • Try a different USB 3 port.
  • Re-seat the cable on both ends.

I would like to look into some USB settings with you to rule some things out as a possible cause for your issue. Please follow the steps below:

  1. Open Control Panel.
  2. Click on Hardware and Sound.
  3. Click on Power Options.
  4. Under "Preferred plan," click the Change plan settings link for the plan you're currently using.
  5. Click the Change advanced power settings link.
  6. Expand USB settings.
  7. Expand USB selective suspend setting.
  8. Make sure this is disabled.

Once those are complete, I would like to ask you to look into your USB Power Saving settings:

  • Right click the Start menu and select Device Manager.
  • Scroll down and open the USB (Universal Serial Bus) section.

After you are in the USB section, please complete each step below for each USB item:

  1. Right click the first option and select Update.
  2. Wait for this to finish.
  3. Right click the first option and select Properties.
  4. Open the Power Management tab, and uncheck the "Allow this device to turn off" box.
  • The tab might not be there for all entries. If missing, move to the next one.

Restart your computer after completing these steps.

If the issue still persist, I would need your help to gather the Oculus Log files. Please follow the below instruction:

  1. Open the Run window (Windows key + R).
  2. Enter and run: C:\Program Files\Oculus\Support\oculus-diagnostics\OculusLogGatherer.exe
    • The above link is the default directory. Bear in mind that if you installed Oculus Home to another drive you will need to update the command with the correct file path.
  3. Select the checkbox next to ‘Full logs’.
  4. Select "1 day" from the "Collect last" drop down list.
  5. Wait for the log collection to finish. This can take some time to complete.
  6. The program will automatically generate a zip file containing your logs, which will be saved to your desktop automatically.
  7. Attach the newly created zip file to your next support response.

Please let me know how this goes so I can be able to assist you further.

Best regards,

Judith

if the refresh rate is lowered to 72 mhz this no longer happens. But it didn't happen before at 90 Hz either. Now always, two or three minutes using the cable, I get the white stripe at the bottom. Has anyone found a solution?

Hi, no solution yet for me. I have problem with 72hz and 90hz.

Hi, exactly same problem here. Recent Link update is somehow broken. I play Dirt 2.0 and after few minutes, bright semi transparent stripe appears on the bottom (cca 1/3 of the screen) and it doesn't disappear even when I go back to Link Home, I have to exit Link app or reconnect the cable. Attaching photo, blurred, but the stripe is clearly visible. Also sometimes the picture and sound is glitching (black artifacts for a fraction of second and crackling sounds) during the play, this didn't happen before recent Quest update. Please resolve these issues soon.

Quest 2, RTX 3080 w latest driver.

Having same issue - however not sure if anyone have tried this quick fix (however it is really temporary) - so interesting fact is, that you can rid of this stripe by shaking your head, like from up to down, like you try to shake it off. After a few nods it almost disappears, then after a few more it's gone. But unfortunately, it comes back in a few seconds later, so this sucks. Anyway, I find this interesting why shaking it down works for a while? Does the bug involve accelerometer or other sensors? Another workaround lasting longer is quit game, and run it again.

Do you have the passthrough finger tap option enabled? Last time I checked it was under "experimental" options I think, could be wrong it's been a while. Anyways, if that's enabled try tapping the side of the headset twice with you fingers to go to passthrough mode and then double tap again to go back and see if the lines go away. I remember the hazy white area on the bottom of my display looking almost like passthrough mode was partially engaged and coming through in the video, like I could see the room moving slightly through the bottom of the display. I really don't know, haven't tried it myself, see what happens.

I'm having the exact same problem but with Elite Dangerous. I downloaded it and played through both the Oculus store and Steam. Been tearing my hair out trying to fix it, have yet to find a combination of settings or updates (beta or live) that will do the trick. Think this requires a hotfix from Oculus.

I am having the same issue in VRChat. I was using a Quest1 with official Oculus Link cable on my newly built PC in the middle of January. It was good for a short time then I started having this same issue. I thought I had a hardware failure so I just bought a new Quest2 and new Oculus cable, within 10 minutes I had the white line show up. It seems to reset upon rejoining a world or moving to a new world.

3090, 5800x, 32G RAM.

I did some testing with my older PC and found that the issue was not present. It is a 1070, 7600k, 16G RAM. Both PCs are on Oculus Ver 26 and both HMDs are on Ver 25. I spent over an hour in a world that I know would cause the white bar to occur on the 1070 PC and it never appeared. I moved to the 3090 PC and within 10 minutes the white bar was very obtrusive and by 15 minutes it was blindingly bright.

Sounding more and more like an Nvidia driver issue that affects newer cards...

I have a 2070S and I have the same issue, so not 30 series problem

I have the same issue. Ryzen 5 3600, RTX 3070. Almost, if not everybody, seems to have a 30-series card. It is most likely a NVIDIA driver issue.  Do you guys have VRSS (Virtual Reality - Variable Rate Super Sampling) enabled in the NVIDIA control panel?

Didn't even know VRSS was a thing, just checked and mine is set to 'off'.

Got this in AC Competizione with rtx2060. After 10-15min. Based on other posts I've lowered my GPU mem OC a little, initial impression is that it fixed it but time will tell.

Same issue for me in DR2.  It definitely happened sometime after V23. I just just haven't played DR2 since.  I will remove the overclock on my 3080 and also try VD but I really think it's a link issue. AMS2 works fine with my overclock.

I don't know if it's just me but the game doesn't look as good with the exact same settings I had b4 also..
