White horizontal stripe across screen while using link

Headset seems to work fine stand-alone.  I use the headset with IRacing, and often (not always) get a translucent horizontal stripe across the screen after about 15 minutes or so.  It doesn't feel like the headset is overheating.  This doesn't show up on the screen mirror on PC, or if I "mirror" with the debug tool.  Is this likely a failing display or is there somewhere else I should look?

UPDATE: POSSIBLE WORKAROUND/FIX USING REGISTRY EDITOR

As I theorized above, this issue does NOT occur for those who use Air Link. Air Link uses HEVC and uses 1 slice for its encoding, whereas wired Link uses H.264 and 5 slices for encoding. Whenever the white bar issue occurs, it is very likely the final 5th slice experiencing an error in the encoding. If you pay close attention when this occurs, you will likely notice it only occurs in the bottom slice of the screen.

To use this workaround, open Command Prompt and use the following:

  • reg add "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Oculus\RemoteHeadset" /v "numSlices" /t REG_DWORD /d "1" /f

I will be experimenting with this for the next few weeks to make sure  I do not get the white bar issue!

Original Post on REVISITED thread:

I have noticed that this is related to the horizontal encoding slices that are visible only through the Link Cable. A very easy stopgap solution would be to offer a toggle in the OculusDebugTool that allows us to turn OFF these encoding slices. Additionally, the encoding slices do not appear with Air Link and thus the issue has almost never occurred wirelessly according to both personal experience and these threads.

Hi everyone,

I am getting this issue with my RTX 2080ti, I have been testing in Dirt 2 and Phasmophobia.

In Dirt 2 I have been testing in free mode and usually get it within 5-10 minutes, the odd thing is if I use the interior views the problem occurs but in the exterior view it reduces. In third-person it slowly fades away but in the hood view, it instantly disappears. If I play exclusively in the 3rd person and hood view the issue never occurs.

In Phasmaphobia when I am in the starting van with lights on me the error was happening, then when I went out into the dark it faded away only to happen again in the van and disappeared outside of the van. Oddly enough the visual artifact stopped happening but I do keep getting disconnected to the PC now.

Other games I have seen it in are Elite Dangerous, Blade and Sorcery, Payday 2, Boneworks, Pavlov, Project Cars 2, Assetto Corsa (this happen once and has never happened again) and Fallout 4.

My 3 USB c 2.0 cords don't have this problem only the "link cable," I paid $129 AUD for this cord.

I've tried underclocking my GPU ( I have never overclocked it,) turning off the XMP profile, upping my PC's airflow (PC is normally around 67 degrees Celcius with everything maxed anyway) Leaving the Oculus Debug tool at default, uninstalling Steam VR, Oculus software, Nvidia drivers and completely removing them from the registry.
Leaving the Oculus at 72, 80 and 90hz
Updating Windows, GPU drivers, checked for errors on every USB C 3.0 port and even turned off the power setting Oculus recommends.

My 3 USB C ports speeds are 1.8GBPS motherboard, 1.8GBPS front of the case and 2.2gbps, my RTX 2080 ti, this even charges my Oculus while in use. I have tried every USB C port and they all have the problem.

I use the Virtual Desktop and the issue never occurs.

I personally believe this to be an Oculus software issue from my experience.

I've had the "snowing pixels" on my Rift S and now I have this.

Same problem here from day one. Does anyone know if it's only software related? Is i get another Quest 2, will it have the same issues?

I got my Quest 2 weeks ago and my Link Cable 1 week ago, I’d say it's I high chance it isn't the Quest, I've used different cords that never get this artifact whatsoever, I don't get kicked from games or anything either. I thought the link cable may be broken but the I accidentally found I could revert the artifact or even get rid of it for good, it seems to be a specific thing when the Oculus software is encoding the video through USB C 3.0 cords. Some people aren't even getting video because of the last update.

I've created ticket to support and sent them logs and video. Everybody here, please do the same, contact support regarding this issue, add link to this forum to give it more priority and hopefully we will get solution soon.

I did that too. After about 4 standard responses, shutdown, boot, reset, delete everything, reinstall, send log, I was told that nvidia 3000 series cards are not supported and that was the last response I got.

I have about a week ago, just link them this forum too. Getting sick of them copying and pasting responses. I’m from Australia so I get one response a night. If we all start contacting them hopefully something is done about it

I did it 2 days ago. Just got an email they're going to replace the headset...

Oh, that's great let us know how it goes as I may try and do the same.

I tried to get a USB c to A 3.0 cord and I still get the artifact, so this may be my only option as I have gone over everything on my computer and can't find a solution.

My 3080 drivers updated yesterday and I played DR2 (with overclock profile on)  for about 40 mins with no problems. I usually get the white bar after 5-10 minutes or so... I will try again tonight and post my results.

What driver version are you on? I'm having version 461.92, that's not the latest?

461.92 also. Just didn't update my drivers for a while. So it happened to you on that version? I'm going to try again tonight. I think it's related to Oculus software V26 or 27 (Beta). I never had the problem on 25.

Yup, happens to me in driver version 461.92. I can't tell when the problem started, after upgrading my GPU or after updating Oculus Software, but ofcourse Link used to work fine.
