Hey everyone! The engineering team has been reading feedback and doing some testing on this topic. We've found that the most common cause of any passthrough noise or unexpected quality is due to the amount of lighting in the room. To get the best experience with passthrough, check out our article here.

The team is still interested in everyone's feedback and will continue to analyze passthrough performance.

I wish I would have found this information before buying one.  Of the countless reviews I watched, none mentioned how blurry things were in passthrough (ya, more light may help) but even the virtual environments are blurry.  The reviews all made it look WAY better than what I'm experiencing.  gaming and general usage (browsing the internet) however, are very crisp and nice to look at.

If your virtual environments are blurry I think you have an additional issue beyond the one being discussed here. Everything generated by the headset is super crisp for me.

Well that doesnt make me feel any better😅.  I cant seem to find any other info either

I'm really sorry!

I assume:

  • you don't wear glasses, and if you do you are either wear them in the headset (at the same distance from your face as normal) or have prescription drop-in lenses?
  • you've adjusted the PD dial on the bottom left to match the distance between your pupils

The good news is that if the headset is faulty, you'd be able to get a new one under warranty, and maybe that one will have better pass-through.

You are correct in that I do not wear or need glasses and I've measured my PD with an app called GlassesOn and it determined that it was 63 after several retakes and once it showed 64.5.  I can't tell any difference when moving the PD wheel/adjustment though.  Maybe that is the issue, should I see a noticeable difference when moving the PD adjustment??  I'd imagine that I would but I don't know.   I have no other reference or know a way to determine that the headset is faulty

I'm seeing reports that update v64 improves passthrough, at least somewhat. It's currently installing if you have eta updates turned on but presumably will roll out systemwide soon. 🤞

SOLUTION: (For me anyways)

I thought there was something wrong with my headset so I found this thread. A lot of Meta Quest users might not want to hear this, but I suspect that a lot of people need vision correction. I have distance correcting contact lenses, which lets me see things far way clearly. If I don't have them on all text and graphics I see in the headset are blurry (the edges of letters and other sharp lines are blurry.)

If I put my contact lenses in then everything gets crisp and clear, even though they are for correcting vision for distant objects. My lenses allow my eyes to not strain and see everything clearly. This would explain why changing brightness, lighting, and even replacing the units won't make a difference. If your eyes need vision correction and you aren't using lenses you are going to have a bad visual experience with VR. So I recommend get your eyes examined at the optometrist and order some contact lenses.

With that said passthrough isn't going to look as good as people maybe expect it to be. If you are buying this headset for mixed reality you probably will be at least a little bit disappointed, but with good vision it's acceptable. I think in many if not most cases, the main problem is that people need vision correction when they think they don't need it.

I'm in the process of getting some multi-focal lenses from my optometrist so I can have a better experience in VR.

To summarize:
Even though the lenses in your headset are designed to project the virtual display at a certain focal distance (often around 2 meters), your eyesight and corrective lenses still play a significant role in how clearly you perceive this image. If your contact lenses correct for distance, they might be helping your eyes to better focus on the image, improving clarity.

This isn't my issue, the passthrough is just garbage and so is the resolution.  Downloading Sidquest and increasing the resolution fixes the blurriness for me but the passthrough is still trash even in high-light environments.

Hello everyone and thanks for the answers in this topic. I recently purchased my Quest 3 helmet and thought (in fact, I still can't convince myself) that my helmet is defective, as the picture through the through cameras is not very good. I was probably expecting much better quality because of most of the promotional videos, but after reading some of the answers in this topic, I was convinced that the problem exists.
Can you tell me where I can see new examples of photos or videos recorded from helmet cameras to see the real picture without post-processing?

I replaced my headset 4 times, it's not defective, it's just not good.  I believe the issues is with the actual displays that are used.  The cameras are fine and as you see from the examples just look better because they are not being displayed on the **bleep**ty quest 3 displays.  For all the ads, marketing, and promotions I only found ONE youtuber mentioned this fact.  The headsets displays are BLURRY but if you were to take a video recorded with the headsets camera and play it back on a TV or PC the video looks perfect.  This should be considered false advertisement IMO.

Thanks a lot for the answer, yes, I tried to record a video from the helmet and see on the phone everything looks great when I saw the distortion, the graininess of the picture at that moment.
