No audio when using Oculus Link

I have no audio on my Quest headset when using Oculus Link.  These are all the things I have tried to resolve the issue:
  • Reboot PC and/or Quest and plugged things back in in many different orders.
  • Restarted the Oculus service.
  • Tried different USB ports.
  • Tried different USB cables.
  • Tried both an active and a passive extender.
  • Tried throwing a USB 3 hub into the mix just because, both as the first part of the chain and as the second part.
  • Tried with headphones plugged into the Quest and with them removed.
  • Tried toggling all the options related to sound that I could find within the software (Devices > Quest and Touch, all those sound options).
  • Repaired / reinstalled Oculus software.
  • Uninstalled Virtual Desktop Streamer app and its audio driver.
  • Changed my desktop speakers from 5.1 to stereo.
  • Attempted setting every single audio output device as default in Windows.
  • Plugged in my CV1, went through the setup, and then tried piping audio through the Oculus Rift Headphones audio output adapter.
  • Reinstalled oculus-driver.exe.
  • Opened a ticket with Oculus Support (they told me they won't support beta software, lol)
Is there anybody with the same issue who found a solution?  Or at this point is my only bet to wait a year until it stops being beta and Oculus Support actually tries to help?
EDIT: I finally got it working after uninstalling the NVIDIA HD Audio driver.
  1. On your keyboard, press Win+X > Select "Device Manager"
  2. Open up the "Sound, video and game controllers" node.
  3. Right click the NVIDIA High Definition Audio driver and choose "Uninstall device".

Hey everyone! It looks like this thread is still getting some traffic from the occasional user, so I'm going to go ahead and lock it. This looks like an issue that was present in the early days—dating back to V13. To avoid floating old threads with outdated information, I highly recommend creating a new thread detailing the new issue, so that our teams can monitor new emerging issues caused by recent releases—or other leading causes. I also recommend taking a look with the native search function to find a more recent existing thread with the same issue.

I've got the sound coming out of my Rift CV1. (I've got the Rift-S, CV1 and Quest all connected at once). Changing sound device in windows didn't help.

I also found it was related to the audio device but don't think i would want to uninstall the driver since I output to HDMI to my TV.  After completely uninstalling and reinstalling Oculus software for it not to work, I remembered a trick I had to do once to get audio to my rift in certain situations:

1) Switch the audio output from 5.1 to Stereo in Windows
2) Unplug and replug in the Quest, I now had audio.

I think this definitely needs to be resolved by Oculus but it seems to be working for now.  I don't want to have to manually change it every time I switch from Quest to Non-VR games.

This was the fix for me, except in the Realtek audio console. As soon as I changed it back to 5.1 audio on the quest stopped.

I’ve tried everything and still can’t get audio on the Quest. It’s frustrating and it must be a software issue.

I had the same problem then I found, in the settings, pick headset, turn up volume and then mute the audio.  The PC speakers are muted but not the Quest!

Hi I thought I had an issue with sound on my desktop  with a 1070 so I switched to my laptop and it seemed fine. Whilst I was on my laptop plugged some headphones into the quest and played some games. Went back to my pc switched it back on now sound is working. But if I unplug the headphones the audio is very very quiet. So is the problem for some that the sound is so so quiet and perhaps  try some headphones to see if it's working? The only setting I changed was allow pc sounds in vr

Same here. No audio with Oculus Link. Windows 7x64 1809. I see the Oculus Virtual Audio Device but I can't even test it (Windows instantly reports an error then). After a while Windows automatically disables the device entirely.

I did some more testing tonight. Tried my 5m/16' active extension cable along with the 1m/3' Anker A to C, and that worked fine, but didn't change the audio situation.

Changing audio devices in Windows did nothing, except to confirm that the VR audio is always playing through the Windows default audio device. I did get sound through the Quest speakers if I played with the audio options in the desktop app (Play Computer Audio in VR), but only while I was in Virtual Desktop mode.

While I was trying out a SteamVR game, I briefly disconnected my USB, and when I plugged it back in, I had Quest speaker audio. I exited to Oculus Home, and the audio continued to work. I unplugged and reconnected again in Oculus Home, and the audio stopped working.

Anyway, it's clearly a software/driver issue, and we know a fix (virtual audio device) is built into the new PTC update, so once it goes to the full release branch and Quest updates to 12.0, it should be sorted (and hopefully the mic issue will also be fixed).

The update has certainly fixed it for me for now - after downgrading back to 1.43 (I had to run setup and do a repair to achieve this), I'm still left with the new Oculus Virtual Audio Device in the sound control panel and finally have audio over the headset.
Edit: Haven't tried to see if this will persist beyond a reboot.
