(Not Resolved) Known Issue - Quest PCVR streaming micro lags and stutter esp. when moving head

Hi team,

I'm getting micro lags and stutter in Airlink on my Quest 3 (EU/UK), esp. when moving my head. In the Oculus debug overlay this causes brief spikes in transmit/decode, fps drops and visible stuttering. The issue is not present on my Quest Pro with otherwise identical settings - see below screenshots to illustrate.

Few more details:
- Issue is not present on Quest Pro with same settings on HMD, router and PC (using same res)
- Issue is worse at higher bitrates, esp. >200mbps, but still present <200mbps
- Issue is unrelated to PC/game latencies (CPU, GPU, Queue each <5ms)
- Stutters/lags are intermittent (every 10-20 seconds) when not moving but happen immediately and reproducibly when moving the head to either side or especially looking downwards (i.e. on any bigger headset movements)
- Wifi 6E router (TP Link AXE75 EU/UK)
- EDIT: exact same issue with Asus RT-AXE7800 (EU/UK) wifi 6e router
- Connection shows as 2,400mbps
- Airlink codec H264 (but same on other codecs)
- I've attempted factory resetting, installing latest drivers
- Updated to v62 and latest Quest Link desktop version (I can see the 120hz option for my Q3)
- EDIT: Ordered a separate Quest 3 for testing: presents the exact same issue

-EDIT: Same issue on 5ghz 802.11ax 160mhz BUT switching to 802.11ac (!) completely fixed the issue. I cant test this on 6ghz but looks like 802.11ax or something related to how q3 implements it is the culprit

As the issue is worse the higher the bitrate and not present on Q Pro with otherwise same settings, I suspect it's related to the below known Wifi issues - but opening a new thread as instructed.

Best,
JensQ3QPro

Updates:
- Tried separate router: exact same issue with Asus RT-AXE7800 wifi 6e router
- Ordered a separate Quest 3: exact same issue on both routers

-Same issue on 5ghz 802.11ax 160mhz BUT switching to 802.11ac (!) completely fixed the issue. I cant test this on 6ghz but looks like 802.11ax or something related to how q3 implements it is the culprit

Hey everyone! Thank you so much for the information you've all provided.

If you have not already done so already, I would suggest reaching out to the support team via email so that they can gather a copy of your logs.

If you have already reached out to support and provided your logs, please PM MetaStoreHelp with your case number.

EDIT 8/5: Hey everyone! Just wanted to reach out and thank you all for your continued patience. If you're still having some issues, the best thing I can recommend at the time would be to submit a bug report. That way it can go straight to our engineers for them to further review everything provided. Thanks again!

Okay I was having this issue, and found the solution to it on my end it seems. Swapping off my ethernet cable to sharing the dedicated access point with the quest 3 fixed this for me

Can you give more details?

Sorry about the slow af reply, work had me away from home.

So I have a router working as an access point, and then a CAT6 cable to my pc.

In this set up, my occlusion lags so hard that it is barely playable.

If I have my computer not hooked up via the ethernet cable, but instead wifi to the same access point, the lag disappears and games run smoothly

I need help with something, for some reason my Quest 3 while using the link cable will freeze for a moment before unfreezing but everything feels weird and it is motion sickness inducing, the screen is all shakey but I ain't moving my head and it like the motion sensor becomes super sensitive. It goes away after putting my head out of guardian or double tapping the headset (passthrough mode) and also control+shift+windows+B which is the driver reset but it ruins the VR experience. I've had it for a long time, but after I upgraded my GPU, I hoped that would help. I was wrong, and I see this is an issue with many AMD cards, I have an Nvidia 4060 ti and an I7-10700k. (the card I had previously was a 1660TI) it happens randomly when playing. before anyone says to upgrade the CPU that's the plan but I don't have a job. Being an HS student is a struggle fr  😔, but If anyone knows a fix for this, it would be greatly appreciated. in AutoAnalysis it's showing as an OAFError. forgot to write it in and don't know where to write it in now but I used to have a quest 2, it also had the same issue with link.

I've had this issue since day 1. I have tried pretty much everything you can imagine, and the issue remains. I have a list of symptoms and possible causes but I believe all this proves the issue lies with the hardware. If I had the option I'd refund this as a defective product as it doesn't do what it advertises. It seems this is more prevalent outside of the US - is this correct?

A wired connection works as well as can be expected. My PC's are unlikely to be at fault. I'm using a 6E capable wifi router with a 2400mbps connection to the Q3, and I have the same problem on 2 different PC's (one with a different 1200mbps router - which should still be sufficient).

It sounds very much like to me, Meta know what the problem is, and they won't admit it due to liability.

So it's been a while since my last post, but I can say without a doubt that v66 resolved the issue I was seeing.  Since then I've been getting rock solid 2400mbps performance on my Quest3 using the Puppis S1 router.

Not sure what you guys did, but thanks a ton!  Ghosts of Tabor on PCVR is where its at!

I too have had reasonably good performance since v66. It should be noted that the Puppis is a 5GHz router, so I'm not sure the issue is resolved for wifi 6E. Unfortunately, those of us living in apartments generally can't get a clear or full-width 5GHz channel block suitable for VR, so the Puppis can't help us.

August 15, 2024, 6 months from Q3 purchase and still airlink messed up, now both on quest 2 and 3. Cable only works on quest 2, Q3 has the debri/water warning bug nonstop so the headset just sits there menacingly.

I'm still having this issue on my Quest 2 with Link. Wireless performance seems worse than it was in fall 2023.

Well just setup my old router (RT-AX88U) directly plugged into my pc, setup the wifi to have the only thing connected to it was the Quest 3 via wifi 6 (also tried just 5) everything was in the same room within 1/2 meter of each other.

Literally the only thing connected to this router was my pc via ethernet & Quest 3 via WIFI 6 (also tried wifi 5) and the stuttering was really bad, worse than it ever was when i was using this router as my main access point, i don't know what to make of this, i thought this would surely solve the stuttering but alas not. this must point to a hardware issue with the quest 3?

I hope meta can solve this as i prefer pcvr.....But as of now i will keep hoping for a fix....

I still have my old PC with which i also had issues even with a standalone network whereas with the new system there is no issue. By the end of the week i'll try doing some investigative work to see what I can learn or at least narrow down the root cause where the only difference is the PC itself.

With a 4080, you definitely have support for AV1 Encoding, so that's probably worth a look.

Also maybe a quickshot: Was your old GPU an AMD GPU by chance?

At this point I'm pretty sure Meta know what the issue is, and it's hardware based - and cannot resolve it. I'm also pretty sure now they're more or less not looking at PCVR as any sort of priority - the state of the front end and desktop app is proof enough of this.

I'm moving on to a Pimax Crystal Light as my primary device now - it isn't wireless but I'm beyond caring now. Meta have lost me as a future customer that's for sure - the complete disregard for PCVR users is quite telling.

hey guys, after my quest 3 always ran wonderfully with virtual desktop, I've now reached the point where my head tracking is failing. It only ever happens when I look around, otherwise absolutely stable fps. I've been trying hard to solve the problem over the last few days and have come to the conclusion that it's due to quest 3 or the last update. problems since = V68!

Me too I have virtual dekstop but I can't play correctly.. so much lags and with a cable link it's the same..

Do you have stuttering or lags/reprojection issues? they are quite different. AFAIK ,Micro stutters are usually networking issues, lag/reprojections are usually caused by you game settings are too high for your pc handle.

If its any help at all this is a basic diagramme of my setup, i have many other devices connected to this network but have only shown what is needed.
