(Not Resolved) Known Issue - Quest PCVR streaming micro lags and stutter esp. when moving head

Hi team,

I'm getting micro lags and stutter in Airlink on my Quest 3 (EU/UK), esp. when moving my head. In the Oculus debug overlay this causes brief spikes in transmit/decode, fps drops and visible stuttering. The issue is not present on my Quest Pro with otherwise identical settings - see below screenshots to illustrate.

Few more details:
- Issue is not present on Quest Pro with same settings on HMD, router and PC (using same res)
- Issue is worse at higher bitrates, esp. >200mbps, but still present <200mbps
- Issue is unrelated to PC/game latencies (CPU, GPU, Queue each <5ms)
- Stutters/lags are intermittent (every 10-20 seconds) when not moving but happen immediately and reproducibly when moving the head to either side or especially looking downwards (i.e. on any bigger headset movements)
- Wifi 6E router (TP Link AXE75 EU/UK)
- EDIT: exact same issue with Asus RT-AXE7800 (EU/UK) wifi 6e router
- Connection shows as 2,400mbps
- Airlink codec H264 (but same on other codecs)
- I've attempted factory resetting, installing latest drivers
- Updated to v62 and latest Quest Link desktop version (I can see the 120hz option for my Q3)
- EDIT: Ordered a separate Quest 3 for testing: presents the exact same issue

-EDIT: Same issue on 5ghz 802.11ax 160mhz BUT switching to 802.11ac (!) completely fixed the issue. I cant test this on 6ghz but looks like 802.11ax or something related to how q3 implements it is the culprit

As the issue is worse the higher the bitrate and not present on Q Pro with otherwise same settings, I suspect it's related to the below known Wifi issues - but opening a new thread as instructed.

Best,
JensQ3QPro

Updates:
- Tried separate router: exact same issue with Asus RT-AXE7800 wifi 6e router
- Ordered a separate Quest 3: exact same issue on both routers

-Same issue on 5ghz 802.11ax 160mhz BUT switching to 802.11ac (!) completely fixed the issue. I cant test this on 6ghz but looks like 802.11ax or something related to how q3 implements it is the culprit

Hey everyone! Thank you so much for the information you've all provided.

If you have not already done so already, I would suggest reaching out to the support team via email so that they can gather a copy of your logs.

If you have already reached out to support and provided your logs, please PM MetaStoreHelp with your case number.

EDIT 8/5: Hey everyone! Just wanted to reach out and thank you all for your continued patience. If you're still having some issues, the best thing I can recommend at the time would be to submit a bug report. That way it can go straight to our engineers for them to further review everything provided. Thanks again!

Hi guys, i may have solved this issue for me for the moment, what i have done like so many others(which i didnt want to do) is hook my old router up to my network wired and set it up as an access point, from there i gave the 5ghz band an ssid (quest3_only) & connected my quest3 to that, that is the only device connected wirelessly to this router.

Finally i checked that my new routers wifi was not using the same wifi channels as my old router, connected the quest 3 to the new wifi setup, ran steam vr with no issues, also virtual desktop working great, i am getting zero frame drops at the moment, connection is rock solid at 2401Mbps .

I will keep you updated if anything changes , looking good so far.

So my purchase of a £700 router was a waste, looks like the quest needs it own access point as so many have suggested.

My PC: CPU - Intel 12700k GPU - Nvidia 4070 ti Super Ram 32GB ddr4 @3200MT Network - Asus ROG Rapture GT-BE98 - 2.5Gbps to pc Asus RT-AX88U as dedicated access point Meta Quest 3 128GB connected via dedicated access point

Hey gang! So I recently changed Internet provider, and I've been getting these really bad stutters in both Air Link and Steam VR when moving my head as well!

I'm on a Wi-Fi 6 router, i'm on the 5ghz network band and with a 80mbps Channel Width. Graphics card is NVIDIA RTX 3060 and I'm up to date on all of that. Do we know if it's just a faulty Meta update? I ordered a better/longer link cable, as I don't have any issue when my headset is directly plugged into my PC, but I really wish it would work well through Wi-Fi.

Apparently, this stuttering seems to be present on Quest 2, too.

I got my Quest 2 in november of 2023, bought Virtual Desktop and i was able to play perfectly fine on all my devices, even with a not so fast router, at 50mbps hevc.

Now, after some updates, i'm NOT able to play on vd OR airlink without stuttering while moving my head or doing a fast 6dof movement in my play area. The stream is otherwise perfect if i don't move much.

This seems a software problem, and has to be fixed. It seems more of a problem with the quest 2/3 decoding phase than anything else. Quest Link exhibits little frameskips(not huge ones like vd and airlink) when doing fast lateral movement with your body, too, but otherwise it's miles better than the state of vd or airlink. It could be some kind of wireless instability too, as my network seems slower on Quest.

This seems to be the case indeed. The other day I talked to a quest 2 user with the same problems in Beat Saber that I am experiencing on the Q3.

I am still pretty sure that there is something related to movement and very rapid input processing/tracking and/or wifi reception drops when moving. But it was interesting to know that the exact same issues arise on the Q2.

For anyone with the quest 3 not seeing wifi 6, the problem maybe with what channel your router is broadcasting on, i changed mine manually to above 106 and my quest 3 could no longer see my wifi, dropping it down to channel 60 and it came back.

Just updated to v.69 and up to 200mbps airlink works just a tiny bit better than before. Almost playable.

Still having this issue with v68. It simply annoys me that bad. Picture gets crazy for a while: Image gets laggy, choppy and black frames appear on the side.

I have this issue since Quest 3 rls.

Hey nothingname1 , have you tried updating to v69 and seeing if that helps?

A few users have reported that it helps this issue.

You can also view the other release notes for v69 here.

Thx for your answer! v69 still not available on my Quest 3. I will keep you posted when I have v69.

I've encountered similar issues in VR and Immersed, and I solved the problem by overclocking the GPU. DO NOT TRY if you don't know what i'm saying or how to do it, this is a very risky action. I believe the issue stems from the insufficient performance of the Qualcomm chip, as well as some flaws in how the Meta system handles buffer frames.

I recently tested ALVR with reverse USB tethering using Gnirehtet, and I experienced stutters even with USB tethering, indicating the issue isn't with my router(which worked perfectly before) but rather with the Quest 3. Meanwhile, the wired Oculus Link is buttery smooth. It would be great if they opened up USB access for developers like Steam Link and Virtual Desktop.

Btw guys is this by any chance isolated to the quest 3 128gb version? I'm on the 128gb version ... thats why i ask. My quest pro has no issues on same pc and network.
