(Not Resolved) Known Issue - Quest PCVR streaming micro lags and stutter esp. when moving head

Hi team,

I'm getting micro lags and stutter in Airlink on my Quest 3 (EU/UK), esp. when moving my head. In the Oculus debug overlay this causes brief spikes in transmit/decode, fps drops and visible stuttering. The issue is not present on my Quest Pro with otherwise identical settings - see below screenshots to illustrate.

Few more details:
- Issue is not present on Quest Pro with same settings on HMD, router and PC (using same res)
- Issue is worse at higher bitrates, esp. >200mbps, but still present <200mbps
- Issue is unrelated to PC/game latencies (CPU, GPU, Queue each <5ms)
- Stutters/lags are intermittent (every 10-20 seconds) when not moving but happen immediately and reproducibly when moving the head to either side or especially looking downwards (i.e. on any bigger headset movements)
- Wifi 6E router (TP Link AXE75 EU/UK)
- EDIT: exact same issue with Asus RT-AXE7800 (EU/UK) wifi 6e router
- Connection shows as 2,400mbps
- Airlink codec H264 (but same on other codecs)
- I've attempted factory resetting, installing latest drivers
- Updated to v62 and latest Quest Link desktop version (I can see the 120hz option for my Q3)
- EDIT: Ordered a separate Quest 3 for testing: presents the exact same issue

-EDIT: Same issue on 5ghz 802.11ax 160mhz BUT switching to 802.11ac (!) completely fixed the issue. I cant test this on 6ghz but looks like 802.11ax or something related to how q3 implements it is the culprit

As the issue is worse the higher the bitrate and not present on Q Pro with otherwise same settings, I suspect it's related to the below known Wifi issues - but opening a new thread as instructed.

Updates:
- Tried separate router: exact same issue with Asus RT-AXE7800 wifi 6e router
- Ordered a separate Quest 3: exact same issue on both routers

-Same issue on 5ghz 802.11ax 160mhz BUT switching to 802.11ac (!) completely fixed the issue. I cant test this on 6ghz but looks like 802.11ax or something related to how q3 implements it is the culprit

Hey everyone! Thank you so much for the information you've all provided.

If you have not already done so already, I would suggest reaching out to the support team via email so that they can gather a copy of your logs.

If you have already reached out to support and provided your logs, please PM MetaStoreHelp with your case number.

EDIT 8/5: Hey everyone! Just wanted to reach out and thank you all for your continued patience. If you're still having some issues, the best thing I can recommend at the time would be to submit a bug report. That way it can go straight to our engineers for them to further review everything provided. Thanks again!

These micro stutters are driving me mad because they make games unplayable. I have been playing Breachers and found when moving side to side the game just gets worse and worse with stuttering. How can Meta let things like this happen on such an expensive headset that is supposed to be superior to Quest 2? If this carries on much longer I'm returning my Quest 3 to Amazon and I'll just buy a Quest 2.

Noticed something strange yesterday, this behaviour is only present with wifi6e for me. I use tp link Axe75 Router.

My router is 2m away from the headset in a plain view, when I wear quest 3 and directly face the router it always shows 2401 receive and transmit... If I literally turn away from it, still standing on the same spot.. The bitrate transmission starts jumping around down to 1200mbps...sometimes to 1700mps etc.. Which causes crazy lag in games...in addition to the stutter.

I had reset my router to fac. Def... No difference.

This sounds very similar to issues which i'm having.

I was using PCVR to play Half Life Alyx which was working pretty well with both devices running over wifi but I decided that it might work a little better if I connected my computer to the router over ethernet.

Once I did that I started to have issues with the image freezing as described by others.

I disconnected the ethernet cable but from that point I get the image freezing if my PC is connected via ethernet or wifi.

At first I thought it had something to do with that change in connection but it may have been coincidental.  The problem did start around the same time as the last Meta Quest 3 update so that could possibly be related.

I have connected the MQ3 to my computer via USB C and the problem goes away entirely so it does seem to be an airlink issue.

Wifi signal strength is 1200mbps

I have tried tweaking a lot of the wifi settings on my router

Having all of the channel bandwidth settings enabmed (20 to 160) Just having 80 enabled

Just having 160 enabled

Wifi 6 enabled and disabled

Turning off Smart connect

CPU: i5 136000k

32gb RAM

AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT

I think i might have a different issue, my transmission lags/stutters completely randomly ever 10-30 seconds and its not smth that i can reproduce by for example turning my head sideways

I'm on Windows 10 22H2

My router is on the latest firmware

My image freezing is pretty random as well, every 10+ seconds or so the image will freeze for a second and I can move my head but the image doesn't move with my head movement.

I just tried SteamLink instead of airlink and it seems to work ok.

I'm on windows 10, I use Virtual Desktop and get a consistent 1200Mbps on my Asus x55 Wi-Fi 5 router. However, I still get bad Micro stuttering after about 15 mins of play time and my online PVP games like Beaches become unplayable.

I really feel like we need a response from the engineers or something now. I'm on the verge of returning my headset now. I don't see why I should be paying the money I have done for a thing that doesn't work as advertised.

I think we deserve a proper response.

Seems to be fixed with v64 for me at least. Just played walkabout mini golf on virtual desktop with h.246+@400Mbps and wifi 6E on asus RT-AXE7800 router for 20 minutes and only got one small stutter.

I just switsched to ptc to test if it has been fixed and it seems like it hasnt been fixed on v64 ptc, but ive only tried air link and not virtual desktop

Not sure if it helps but I fixed my stuttering by turning off the 120Hz refresh rate in the Quest 3 settings and also turning the battery saver mode on. This lowers the Refresh rate to 72Hz in standalone mode. I also turned the refresh rate down in the Virtual desktop settings, I have this mostly set to 80Hz or 90Hz depending on the game. For the most part this has fixed both my issues with jitter and stutter in both standalone and PC-VR games.

Not sure if this helps but at the same time I reset my boundaries and deleted the old history. I also used Quest game optimizer, or side Quest and have foveated rendering set to high or medium depending on the game. I think you can change the foveated rendering in the Oculus debug tool.

Pretty much turn the headset off, real life is "bug" free and see as much Hz as you can see :3

When Airlinking my Quest Pro to my PC I have a persistent issue even with a router reset, PC reinstall and Quest pro factory reset. One thing that remains common is that every 2-15 minutes the WiFi starts to stutter a lot every second specifically when using airlink, virtual desktop and steam link, and goes away after a minute/10 minutes or until I turn off and on the quest pro from standby to in use. These are high bandwidth apps of course. I am testing on Wifi 6E 6GHz and 6 5Ghz with the same results. Moving playspaces also has the same issue of stuttering like this.

This issue has persisted for 3+ months now and it is very frustrating.
For reference my setup has:

  • a lot of EMI but mainly on the 2.4ghz band
  • my router is in the same room as me and it is a AXE-16000
  • controllers don't disconnect from the headset during the jitter period
  • eye tracking and face tracking is on
  • the headset is always powered and charged from the included power adaptor and while in use is always connected to power.
  • PC is connected to router via a 2.5G/10G connection which is a Marvell ethernet driver.
  • PC is a 7950x and a rtx 4090

On other headsets that I have tried that this doesn't happen on is, Quest 1, Quest 2, Quest 3. This is a Quest Pro only problem I am facing. I have tried looking this issue up and it seems like I am the only one? Also to note, this didn't happen when I got my Quest Pro, it happened at some point during January and has persisted.
