Quest 3 headset not recognised at PC boot (Link cable)

After booting (Link cable, USB-C to USB-C, always plugged in to the PC), my Quest 3 headset is only ever seen as connected to the PC (Windows 11) if I pull out the USB-C plug on the headset and push it back in again. I am concerned that this will eventually damage the plug.

Why is this? How can I fix it? Just very occasionally (<5% of the time I'd say), the headset is connected and works without my having to disconnect and reconnect it, but I have no idea why - no different procedure.

I have checked in Device Manager that none of the USB ports are set to turn off under Power Management. I have also tried setting the Oculus service to delayed start, but there's no change. Tried a different cable - still the same.

Once connected, the USB test via the Oculus app shows 2.5GB and I almost never then have any problems with the connection - until the next reboot.

Any ideas on this please? Thanks.

    Hi martinlest 🙂

I use my Q3 usually with air link, so I can't use it as example, but the Q2 is permanently connected to pc and is also shown as not connected after booting up the pc. I don't recall the update which brought this behaviour.

But I don't have to unplug the cable to make it work, not on the headset and not on pc.

I just toggle to air link in the link option and when it says connected, I toggle air link off and tada! .... the cable connection is shown as connected now.😁

This might or might not work for you...... I told this "workaround " somebody else, sadly it did not work for them.🤷‍♀️

Maybe I should also mention that the Quest was connected to the pc via air link before.

Thanks for replying. I did see something about disabling Airlink completely in developer mode (no problem, as I never use it). I'll try what you suggest (though removing th plug is far quicker)... Meanwhile I have ordered a USB-C Male /Female adapter so that at least, if I do have to stick to the unplug/replug method, I won't be risking damage to the Quest's USB port (which is connected directly to the M/B, so at some risk). I already have the link cable secured with a cale tie.

(Almost bought  a magnetic usb adapter, but risk of shorting out the headset for good, though slight, was too worrying for me to go with that option).

It takes only a few seconds and there is no movement on the plug 🙃

To be honest, I like that it is not connected immediately..... otherwise I have to unplug the Quest 2 each time I want to use theQuest 3 via air link because the headset would tell me there is already a headset linked.😂

Actually Choleni, your AirLink idea is probably the easiest!

That said, I simply added a shortcut to the Oculus app to the Windows Start Menu (can't see that the app has a 'start with Windows' option), so the app opens soon after I boot.

When I then put on the headset now, I see the message 'PC Disconnected', but as soon as I click 'OK', then Link automatically opens up. I assume it's a matter of timing.

Probably not much good for folks who use their PC for purposes other than VR, but for me, who has one PC dedicated to X-Plane and needs the Oculus app/Link every time, this is definitely a 'keeper'.

make sure you run as admin, also you will need to check windows security settings Ransomware Protection, manage ransomware protection, check block history, then allow all the meta and steam VR etc that is also blocking the link connection and causing issues where it will not even see the device etc... you will wanna reboot after doing all these steps prior to the other steps as the system will update all the meta horizon and headset drivers after you sideload the update onto headset and vise versa.

It's a pain ik, but totally worth it when the headset and computer are able to communicate properly

Also you need to sideload update all the headsets, for some reason they're not updating or during update there is a link issue causing massive bugs, Use this link Meta Quest Software Update , it will bring you to the Meta Quest Software update page, then just follow instructions, also after that do a fresh install of the Meta Horizon Link App via this link Getting started with Meta Horizon Link App | Meta Help Center , make sure you do the Debug tool steps BEFORE sideloading the update as you will want the connection to be stable and solid to avoid disconnect link issues over the default settings. This will also fix SteamVR issues as well.

You all are welcome BTW ✌️
