(Resolved) Known Issue - V62/63 USB-C Debris/Water Warning

v62 has a big problem with USB port sensor (found the very same issue on my Q3 and the one of my wife)... when used with an extension cable (even if it is a quality cable) from time to time star showing the debris-water warning message. Of course there is no debris or water, just a nasty software false alarm.

Known Issue

Status: Fix rolling out in V64 - Public Release

Hey everyone! Back with another update. I got word from the team that we should start seeing improvements in the upcoming updates, however, they want to stray from promising any specific timeline for the fix just yet. I know everyone is still prepped for jumping back into their pop-up free VR experience, but this is the extent of information available to me at the moment. Hopefully I can find out and share more with you all soon! Thanks for remaining patient while the team works towards improvements!

Update (3/27/2024):

Hey everyone! After waiting patiently from the team for any updates I was able to share with you all, I just got confirmation that we should see a fix in the upcoming V64 build. I've tried to get word about a potential release for V64 & V64's PTC, but I haven't heard anything about it just yet. Be sure to keep an eye on the Announcements board, as that's the place we'll be posting about the PTC and Official releases.

If you continue to experience the error on a V64 build, please let me know! I'd also appreciate if you included your V64 software version number.

  • You can check in Quick Settings > Settings > Software Update under the Current Version Details section. The formatting should be 64.#.#.###.###.#########.

Update (4/5/2024):

Hey again! I'm glad to see that a lot of you are no longer having issues after the rollout of PTC's 64.0.0.419.370.583580230. After bringing more reports to our team, I was notified that the official fix hasn't shipped just yet, but it's a really good sign that improvements are being shown in the PTC builds! The official fix should be rolling out in the public release of the V64 build.

Thank you again for your patience, and please be on the lookout on our Blog or the Announcements board for when the public build is officially announced. Of course, I'll be notifying you all here as well once I find out more information!

Just got the water debris error within one hour of updating to V63. Didn't get it once with V62. When are Meta going to fix this nonsense?

ZotzWylde  I just got non-beta v63 on both my Q3 and QPro/rtx4090 earlier today, also a non-beta v63 on my meta link pc app.  Link with my official link cable connected to my z790mb usb3.2 type-c port is working very well with rift and SteamVR apps/sims.  I never have had your issue with earlier updates.

Sorry to hear that some are still having issues and I hope you find a solution in the near future.  The only 2x things I think you might want to try are lowering your refresh rate below 120hz and disabling hand tracking (including eye and face with QPro).  Also maybe try dropping your Link encoding bitrate to 450mbps.  Good luck mate and cheers.

It's worse than that. I don't even have a PC. This is happening on standalone....and I know it's Meta's bug because it happened within one hour of updating to V63.

PS:- I'm not even using a wired connection. I'm getting the error message on standalone and on official non-PTC V63. The update has actually pushed the bug to my headset, that I didn't get once with non-PTC V62.

I can understand the PTC releases possibly having a bug or two but this is the official V63 update!!!!!!!

New update, same problems, so it´s useless!

Maybe scoped storage is also not fixed and we must find the new bug?!

So here's my latest response from support. Seriously WTF!!! No problem on their end?🤔 But they admitted to it here. This is just F'ed up corruption to the fullest.

"Greetings from Meta Store Support.

I can see that you were reporting on the water and debris warning received on your headset. I appreciate your kind patience and understanding while we were looking into your concern and apologized for the delayed update.

As per checking, there is no issue found from our end regarding your concern. If you are able to ignore the warning while using the headset, do be advised to file a bug report from your end so that our engineer team could check on this further.

If you are unable to ignore the warning and it interrupted the usage of the headset, I can help you to check for warranty claim or any other alternative option available for you. In order for me proceed with the alternative option available, I will need the information below.

Skippy111taz  I'm not sure what the problem is since I don't have this with either my Q3 or QPro with v63 (non-beta).  All I can suggest is you work though this with meta support.  I don't know but it may be a hardware problem, who knows?

It's not a hardware problem. Meta have categorically said it's not a hardware problem. It has been identified as a software problem which they have reproduced and are working on, with no ETA for the fix, per the pinned post.

Knowing all of the above, what is the purpose behind constantly posting variants of "It could be a hardware problem, who knows?"

Regardless of the cause being purely software or a mix of hardware and software.  Any company worth it's salt and truly worried about its customers would have rolled the update back until the issue was resolved.  There is nothing in v62 or v63 people couldn't live without for now whilst they resolved the issue.  At the very least they should have enabled a downgrade path for people who are unable to use their device.

Whoever is running the ship over at meta has made a massive mistake not dealing with this and letting it run on.

If they can't fix it right away, then they should push a build where people can toggle the USB warning on and off in experimental features or, failing that, give us the same toggle in developer mode.

If neither of these are possible, then just turn the pop-up off temporarily by deleting a couple of lines of code.

Done. Meta could then spend a year repairing it for all it matters, as it wouldn't affect us in any way.

Any of those three fixes could be pushed today, rather than keeping customers waiting, given that it's been six weeks already.

You're welcome, Meta.

100% this. My Quest 3 is now back in the cupboard and I'm back to Sim Racing in the Quest 2. Absoloutely atrocious given the cost of the Quest 3.

After finally getting through to support  and explaining the issue that thousands of people have already posted about  they made me give them screenshots and document all of these problems as if it was the first time they were hearing of the issue. They told me to do a power down volume reset and hit reboot headset from the startup options...that did not fix it. I did a factory reset...no dice. I've paid $120 to take it to the repair technicians that they and Google both use that honor their warranties (ubreakIfix) for a USB-C Port cleaning and overnight session in their commercial electronic dehydrator. I bought the best USBC Port cleaner and detergent I could find on Amazon (do not make the mistake of buying one that is actually meant for iPhones as they are incorrectly labeled frequently). The inside of my USB C port is clean enough to eat off of and yet the issue still persists. I have an oem Link cable. I've tried both ends that does not fix the issue. I tried a 7th generation anker gan 737 charger and battery bank as well as a variable power supply and the latest generation power delivery PSS chargers. I tried the original charging brick and cable that the quest came with as well as the 45 watt official meta charger and cable that comes with the quest pro controllers ... None of which make a difference.  It still happens no matter what. After hours and hours with them and chats that kept disconnecting and having to restart The conversation re-explaining myself as if nobody ever adds notes to your ticket, finally after a sixth time reconnecting to chat I managed to get through to somebody and eventually all they said was we can send you a refurbished unit but you have to ship us yours first. After looking up on Reddit and seeing that there are many people who have shipped their headsets back and waited months and not gotten anything in return or received a scuffed up refurbed headset that was not new or in as good of condition as the one they sent, I requested advanced replacement where they sent me a replacement before I mailed mine out to which they refused even though it's under warranty and I had the receipt.  I told him that was not acceptable and asked to speak to somebody else or supervisor for the resolution and they've not responded. It's been several weeks. I take immaculate care of my headset because I care about it a lot and I spare no expense. I make make apps and content on their platform and have purchased every single Oculus headset that has ever been released and I've never been treated like this before . I'm an engineer and have access to lots of equipment so what I'm doing right now is using a multimeter to measure the pins on an oem charging dock along with some cables that were made to be able to charge the quest pro controllers with convenience while they have a grip cover on them. I can't seem to find any information on the subject but I'm hoping that If you slightly modify those cables, you can effectively rig up a charging cable solution that is magnetic that charges utilizing the pins at the bottom of the headset Rather than the USB C port, I don't know why they don't offer something like this already. Considering it's incredibly frustrating to only have one USB port and dozens and dozens of accessories that the ridiculously minuscule battery life prevents you from being able to use since it constantly needs to have a battery Bank shoved into it and that's when it's even working properly. I had noted before with my charging meter that the quest had sent is horribly inconsistent in its charging speeds. Even when it's turned off and even with the OEM 45 watt charger it would often only charge to 80% and then just stop which is ridiculous. Cell phones from 12 years ago. Have better charging management circuit boards and I'm not trying to bash this headset. I love it and I want to make it better but they really are not giving us the tools to do that. I have a 3D printer and knowledge of circuits and electronics. If I can get the solution working I'll make a video and post a link to it here for any of you people that are DIY types like myself. You can message me on my Tiktok Tr0n

Brand new Quest 3 got the debris or water message within one day.

I have two Quest 3s and only had this issue once on the other HMD.

I finally received the V63 update but the problem persists. The V62 version ruined everything and it's difficult to understand why they haven't solved this problem yet. For simracing people this is a big problem, it decisively affects the eventual use of the HMD.

If possible, I've been using airlink and a usb-c laptop charger plugged into the meta as a temp fix.

The meta app dev competition is around the corner, and i have to delay testing it on my quest 3 because of this bug.

It is funny how i could start developing without a real device on unity, and now that i bought the expensive device, i am still emulating it on unity.

just wtf meta?
