(Resolved) Known Issue - V62/63 USB-C Debris/Water Warning

v62 has a big problem with USB port sensor (found the very same issue on my Q3 and the one of my wife)... when used with an extension cable (even if it is a quality cable) from time to time star showing the debris-water warning message. Of course there is no debris or water, just a nasty software false alarm.

Known Issue

Status: Fix rolling out in V64 - Public Release

Hey everyone! Back with another update. I got word from the team that we should start seeing improvements in the upcoming updates, however, they want to stray from promising any specific timeline for the fix just yet. I know everyone is still prepped for jumping back into their pop-up free VR experience, but this is the extent of information available to me at the moment. Hopefully I can find out and share more with you all soon! Thanks for remaining patient while the team works towards improvements!

Update (3/27/2024):

Hey everyone! After waiting patiently from the team for any updates I was able to share with you all, I just got confirmation that we should see a fix in the upcoming V64 build. I've tried to get word about a potential release for V64 & V64's PTC, but I haven't heard anything about it just yet. Be sure to keep an eye on the Announcements board, as that's the place we'll be posting about the PTC and Official releases.

If you continue to experience the error on a V64 build, please let me know! I'd also appreciate if you included your V64 software version number.

  • You can check in Quick Settings > Settings > Software Update under the Current Version Details section. The formatting should be 64.#.#.###.###.#########.

Update (4/5/2024):

Hey again! I'm glad to see that a lot of you are no longer having issues after the rollout of PTC's 64.0.0.419.370.583580230. After bringing more reports to our team, I was notified that the official fix hasn't shipped just yet, but it's a really good sign that improvements are being shown in the PTC builds! The official fix should be rolling out in the public release of the V64 build.

Thank you again for your patience, and please be on the lookout on our Blog or the Announcements board for when the public build is officially announced. Of course, I'll be notifying you all here as well once I find out more information!

As soon as I put on my headset and tried the new update, the debris error popped up again. Not good for sim racing at all. I really want a refund at this point, this was my vr entry device and it sucks it has to be this way.

Hopefully we will have a fix very soon in v64 of the headset firmware. That is what the update on the first page of this thread indicates.

Got tested v64 early this morning,

all good from 100%  to 92%batteryload. Warning sign appears at 91% batteryload at 120hz (full res), then i switched to 90hz (full res) refreshrate and  all good to 83%. reappears again every 1-2 mins under 83%.. That's a cycle that has been repeating for me regularly over the last 2 months. I'm truly convinced thats something deeply related to the voltage output from the battery.

Nothing has really changed for me, but I'm full of hope.

The Quest 3 is my first venture into VR.  I purchased the overpriced Oculus data cable along with it, and tried every USB port I had to no avail.  No connection at all, and I would see the "water/dirt" error around 50% of the time.  I did notice that the headset would charge though.  I dont know if these issues are interconnected, but I found a solution that works for me which resolved them all.  I had worked with Support for several hours this past weekend and they had me go through the process outlined in other posts here.  Nothing worked.  I sent in logs and their response was to ask me to perform the exact same actions 😐  Seeing as I was not going to get any actual help from Meta Support, I started digging into this myself, trying different things.  I found one thing that finally worked.  I have a powered USB hub with USB A and C ports.  One of the USB C ports is high powered.  I plugged the port into my highest powered USB-C port on my PC and I plugged the overpriced Oculus cable into the hub.  BAM....works perfectly now with a consistent 2.3Gbps connection, no issues, no lag, no more dirt/water errors.  My theory is the Quest 3 requires more power than unpowered USB ports can realistically supply.

My setup:  Meta Quest 3 on v63, Oculus Link Cable, Lenovo Legion Tower 7i Gen 8.  The Legion has a high-powered USB-C port and thats what I used to plug the hub into.  Plugging the Oculus cable by itself into that port didnt work.  Nor did it work on every other USB port.

Hope this helps someone.  I sent all of this to Meta Support for their awareness...no reply.

I think the fix is simply to use a different headset that doesn't come from Meta?!

2 months of this bug, that's disgraceful. Let's compare simracers with car drivers....you buy a car and every few kilometres the engine stops and you get a message telling you to restart it.... would car drivers put up with this for so long...maybe they would, but only with a free hire car.

The hardware is always great, but the software always seems to be the responsibility of others and from the looks of it, it's an absolute mess.

The information policy and customer requests (downgrade) are also the bottom of the drawer.

I just hope that other manufacturers bring out hardware that is not so expensive, then that's it with Meta.

p.s. it's not such a problem for me now, as I don't actually get the message any more (new charger), I had the same problems with the original one from Meta, which is also ridiculous again if you disqualify your own charger.

So, I've just updated to v64 and so far I haven't seen the water/debris pop up anymore (fingers crossed). This used to happen every 30-60 seconds on v63 and v62 and was nonexistent prior to that. I haven't used my headset in about a month apart from today and I will do further testing on Saturday when I have more free time. But I'm still really angry about this whole thing and I don't think I will be purchasing anything from the quest store or anything else from Meta anymore. Just an overall terrible experience.

I think V64 for the headset still isn't out yet bud, it's only V64 on the PC, the headset roll out (which we are told should sort it) will hopefully come soon.

If I knew how to take a screenshot on the meta quest 3 headset then I'd post it here for proof, but I don't.

64.0.0.349.370.581241269 has been good for hours with no sign of the problem. Prior to this version it happened to me every time every 30 seconds.

Appears to be fixed with v64 of the headset. An update was also pushed to the controllers.

Tested with Virtual Desktop streamer in addition to quest link. I have not checked SteamVR or ALVR.

I received a driver update pushed out to my quest 3 last night which fixed the USB problem for me. Have used a powered USB all day with no issues at all. Previously had popup errors for USB debris constantly now since V62 update.
