(Resolved) Known Issue - V62/63 USB-C Debris/Water Warning

v62 has a big problem with USB port sensor (found the very same issue on my Q3 and the one of my wife)... when used with an extension cable (even if it is a quality cable) from time to time star showing the debris-water warning message. Of course there is no debris or water, just a nasty software false alarm.

Known Issue

Status: Fix rolling out in V64 - Public Release

Hey everyone! Back with another update. I got word from the team that we should start seeing improvements in the upcoming updates, however, they want to stray from promising any specific timeline for the fix just yet. I know everyone is still prepped for jumping back into their pop-up free VR experience, but this is the extent of information available to me at the moment. Hopefully I can find out and share more with you all soon! Thanks for remaining patient while the team works towards improvements!

Update (3/27/2024):

Hey everyone! After waiting patiently from the team for any updates I was able to share with you all, I just got confirmation that we should see a fix in the upcoming V64 build. I've tried to get word about a potential release for V64 & V64's PTC, but I haven't heard anything about it just yet. Be sure to keep an eye on the Announcements board, as that's the place we'll be posting about the PTC and Official releases.

If you continue to experience the error on a V64 build, please let me know! I'd also appreciate if you included your V64 software version number.

  • You can check in Quick Settings > Settings > Software Update under the Current Version Details section. The formatting should be 64.#.#.###.###.#########.

Update (4/5/2024):

Hey again! I'm glad to see that a lot of you are no longer having issues after the rollout of PTC's 64.0.0.419.370.583580230. After bringing more reports to our team, I was notified that the official fix hasn't shipped just yet, but it's a really good sign that improvements are being shown in the PTC builds! The official fix should be rolling out in the public release of the V64 build.

Thank you again for your patience, and please be on the lookout on our Blog or the Announcements board for when the public build is officially announced. Of course, I'll be notifying you all here as well once I find out more information!

There was also a water warning here! I have had Quest 3 since October 12, 2023, and today it appeared, using a 3 meter cable, and without the cable the warning also appeared (battery less than 10%)

Yesterday I had a gaming session with my friend. Same charger Sony 5v/3A, 9v/3A, 15v/2A, same cable 5m ULT-WIIQ USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 Type, 100W/5A. My friends quest still on v60 me on v62. My friend no debris liquid warning at all me almost every 10 minutes. I never had this problem before when I was on v60. Its useless at the moment.

Same issue as everyone here, I'm afraid. Keep getting the message since the latest OS update, tried a variety of chargers and cables (Meta original, PD, third party) and also affects my battery headstrap (from Kiwi). Like many others, I can no longer connect my headset to my PC without running into this issue, making it effectively useless. All of these worked without issue prior to the update.

It's very discouraging to hear that the new build (v63) also seems to have this issue.

I would very much appreciate an option to downgrade to v60 for those affected.

I have the same issue. Just bought a meta quest 3. My cables were working without issues with quest 2 now i have this stupid warning that screw any try for gamming. Thinking sending the oculus back, i dont know if there will even be any damage and i dont want a product that came out of box withoht functioning properly. Tons of people complaining and meta wont do **bleep**? Cmon do something, roll back last update if thats the issue. Do something

I am able to temporarily fix this by pulling the official oculus link cable with a bit a tension along its entire length, you should be able to feel the cable stretch a little bit. This has stopped the message from occuring, and its come back once since i did this, repeated the process and now it is working fine again. Obviously something got borked with power delivery on the software side in the last update, and for some reason putting tension on the fiber optic cable fixes it temporarily. I got this oculus quest about a week ago, along with the cable.

Ive been able to replicate this fix twice now by just applying tension to the official oculus link cable, its lasted about two days each time before i have to do it again. Dunno how helpful this will be for everyone but this works for me.

Still haven't heard back from support yet. But I found something interesting last night. I tried using the charging block from my Quest 2 on my Quest 3. I had no error pop up in a 4 hour session. But my battery slowly depleted while using it. It got down to 56% in the 4 hours. That's with battery saver mode on. With the Quest 3 block it would stay topped up all the time.

The Quest 3 block puts out 15-18 watts of power "depending on what the device needs". The Quest 2 block is just a steady 10 watts. The way this error pops up randomly it almost seems like when the headset demands the increase in power, it triggers that warning error.

I watched that video on how to roll back the firmware and it seems simple enough to do. But I'm waiting to hear back from support so I really don't want to try it yet.

Kuject Design 16FT Link Cable for... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09TN25765?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

That is the cable I'm using it is plugged into my pc and the quest 3 charger is plugged into the charge port of the cable. Yesterday at the start of vr session I got the message while getting setup to fly a campaign mission in dcs. I restarted the quest 3 unplugged the cable which is zip tie supported with the headstrap I have so there's so weight on the port then plugged back in. Played many hours Yesterday off and on trying to complete a mission and never had the pop-up been playing a few hours today and still nothing.

TheLegend27 tried a 5 watt apple watch charger and i didn't get the false warning. But headset discharges during use, which is not good enough because I do very long races and I need to not worry about my headset discharging. With v60 I could use indefinitely and it would not lose charge. Please pass this on to the team
I use the tiergarde active link cable https://www.amazon.es/Tiergrade-compatible-separada-auriculares-accesorios/dp/B0C4H13HQH/ref=sr_1_1?__mk_es_ES=%C3%85M%C3%85%C5%BD%C3%95%C3%91&crid=10KXQUSE6PM3R&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.9H-kwpdD3QkOU30ic0R5jqON58Xqt83TsTZ8MfB1j7v1rpCMjLBIv190GL1VvDjyioDX8Rz3uwADjdSw1xCMxfO6vAvrhFAwMvL_njmMDSqGcXloS1SMy0xMTrRc9fOgmtwF6uIwcIgfy7ynGJ1gBlWx1w7FAT3hb-UVQ_3VU8vIO3hv_V9j_mJKaNUt4OgpAX0I-ONaVif_p5MkX-c4Gw.cKtTS20ex4mzzXvzlGPhboI56Sp8Ht4LzQO5G_ZANmM&dib_tag=se&keywords=tiergrade+quest+3&qid=1708472438&s=electronics&sprefix=tiergrade+quest+3%2Celectronics%2C88&sr=1-1

EDIT: Using the official quest 3 charger still produces the false water warning. Come on guys

I figured out what the issue is. It is the cables in combination with v62 firmware. Specifically any long ISB3.2 cables and not even all of them. I bought this one on amazon after seeing this as the software issue 240W USB C to USB C Cable 6ft,... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CM9FNT26?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

and low and behold went for four hours straight with the same wall jack and no error debris messages not even 1. It has something to do with a v62 firmware and SOME cables. Get a USBC v 2.0 cable and it works fine. The old cable was working fine in v60 so it is a firmware issue.of some kind. Try it and you will see.
