(Resolved) Known Issue - V62/63 USB-C Debris/Water Warning

v62 has a big problem with USB port sensor (found the very same issue on my Q3 and the one of my wife)... when used with an extension cable (even if it is a quality cable) from time to time star showing the debris-water warning message. Of course there is no debris or water, just a nasty software false alarm.

Known Issue

Status: Fix rolling out in V64 - Public Release

Hey everyone! Back with another update. I got word from the team that we should start seeing improvements in the upcoming updates, however, they want to stray from promising any specific timeline for the fix just yet. I know everyone is still prepped for jumping back into their pop-up free VR experience, but this is the extent of information available to me at the moment. Hopefully I can find out and share more with you all soon! Thanks for remaining patient while the team works towards improvements!

Update (3/27/2024):

Hey everyone! After waiting patiently from the team for any updates I was able to share with you all, I just got confirmation that we should see a fix in the upcoming V64 build. I've tried to get word about a potential release for V64 & V64's PTC, but I haven't heard anything about it just yet. Be sure to keep an eye on the Announcements board, as that's the place we'll be posting about the PTC and Official releases.

If you continue to experience the error on a V64 build, please let me know! I'd also appreciate if you included your V64 software version number.

  • You can check in Quick Settings > Settings > Software Update under the Current Version Details section. The formatting should be 64.#.#.###.###.#########.

Update (4/5/2024):

Hey again! I'm glad to see that a lot of you are no longer having issues after the rollout of PTC's 64.0.0.419.370.583580230. After bringing more reports to our team, I was notified that the official fix hasn't shipped just yet, but it's a really good sign that improvements are being shown in the PTC builds! The official fix should be rolling out in the public release of the V64 build.

Thank you again for your patience, and please be on the lookout on our Blog or the Announcements board for when the public build is officially announced. Of course, I'll be notifying you all here as well once I find out more information!

Hello everyone, I'm also joining the thread regarding the crappy USB flood pop-up. Is there any update on this matter?

I am sad if i need to physically reply to this thread to get it to a higher priority, but here i am.

I bought the quest 3 on 6feb and could use the official link cable on software version 60. after some upgrading i start to receive the liquid and dust warning like everyone else. With this warning, my quest stops both data and charging until i completely remove the cable and then reboot it.

Work-around (but not really) is to use a usb 2.0 A-to-C cable. at least it connects, charges, and side load my unity game prototype properly. However, i can no longer do actual pcvr thing. usb 2 is simply too slow.

i might add that the link cable actually connected for a brief second before disconnecting. It triggerred the automatic oculus link software, but always failed in the middle of connecting, so i never accurately connected to it once. i haven't tried air link at all.

some other observations:

When i plug the link cable to the quest 3, even without the other side plugged to the pc, it will already start showing the liquid debris message, as well as shutting off usb data and usb charging.

when i plug in the usb 2.0 cable, both data and power goes through, albeit very slow.

when i plug in the laptop charger ranked PD, the quest 3 charges fine. no data is involved here.

throughout this report, i am using the usb4-usb-c port from my laptop. for the usb2 port it is a usb-a port, if it is concerned.

my current software version is 62.0.0.260.343.566123828

runtime: 62.0.0.257.341.566161015

OS sersion: SQ3A.220605.009.A1

juuuust plugged the oculus cable to my machine and the issue is still here

Just upgraded to the latest PTC version 63, same problem.

Not even need to plug the official link cable to PC, just plugging the L-shaped USB-C plug to my Quest 3 can trigger this issue: Right when i connect the cable, i see a black screen that prompts me to take off the headset, and it shows the "Liquid debris warning" that is the same as before.

Link cable part number: 345-00943-03

Quest 3 version: 63.0.0.146.363.566760361

Runtime version: 63.0.0.145.363.566760467

OS version: SQ3A.220605.009.A1

What if you use the USB-C to USB-C cable that came with it (I know it's short!) but it is also USB 2.

Also, does it make any difference if you have the Quest completely powered off and connect the cables first, then power it on?

When you use the official cable do you have it tangled up or straight and unravelled?

What is your meta link app version on your computer (settings --> general)?

When you connect to your computer do you get the prompt in the main notifications section on the headset about allowing connection of the USB device to your computer?

Bearing in mind that this has been flagged as an issue since October and someone there also said they 'resolved' it by stretching the cable out straight, i'd say you should give that a go:

https://communityforums.atmeta.com/t5/Get-Help/Quest-3-warnings-about-debris-or-liquid-damage-when-plugging-the/td-p/1095697/page/2

Agreed, it is ridiculous, but in some ways it makes sense as the official cable is a fibre optic cable and fibre optic cables are meant to be run straight and without sharp bends, which is annoying as this cable has a tendancy to curl up. Don't know about other cables people are using.

If you're problems continue then you should log a call with support as well as commenting here.

ps. Don't expect commenting alone to achieve anything unless you are trying to provide information towards a workaround or resolution. The numbers up marking the opening post will just be too low for META to be concerned.

No, it makes no sense, this issue was not here on v60 for the vast majority. Posts like these muddy the waters and open questions to whether its our fault. It's not the users' fault, it's not the cable not being straight enough, it's not horoscope either. It's the v62 update and it's been two weeks. This is beginning to get ridiculous.

That's the point. We can try to guess every possibile cause but the solution is simple: LET US GO BACK TO V60 which worked perfectly. If Meta won't fix it in a couple of weeks I'll return my device and ask for a total refund because they are unable to fix such a simple issue (I repeat... v60 WORKED PERFECTLY).

Can i reset my Q3 and without connecting it to wifi have original firmware? Or does it require to have internet after a reset to get it up and running? I just use it for PCVR simracing...

Did some testing today and changed from my USB-C 3.2 Gen 2x2 port (which was working fine when on v60) to a USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 port on the motherboard. Same cable as before (High end 3m USB-C 3.2).
Had a 2 hour PCVR session now without receiving the debris message. Quite surprised actually.
Yesterday (when on the 3.2 Gen2x2 port) was the worst so far with getting the message 10 times in an hour. Usually I get it after 30min and then it gradually gets worse.

As far as I can tell the power output of the ports on the MB is the same. But the battery drain on the Quest3 was much higher now and the headset was much cooler than normal after 2hrs now so as a previous poster suggested, it may be related to power delivery.

Time will tell if it's reliable. Will post an update after some more sessions.

i did the exact same thing an didn´t get the error message until about 2 hours in. please let us know if you continue to not get the error message. i´ve tried everything and it keeps happening (i can't use a 5 watt power supply because the headset discharges incredibly fast during use with that, and i do very long races where i can't be thinking about whether my wired headset is discharging. it's incredibly annoying)

Like you I bought the headset exclusively for Simracing and the pop up is incredibly annoying. I switched back to HP reverb G2 for the Daytona 500 because I was so worried that the issue would happen again. It varies wildly as to when it pops up so I don't wanna be in the middle of a session and have it pop up and then cause a crash on track.

The Bathurst 12 hour is this weekend and it doesn't look like I'll be able to use the headset for that event either 🙁

I also hate having to use these sketchy cables just to use the headset without it discharging. I really wish they offered a wired only version of this headset as it would easily be the best option for Sim racing.

@TheLegend27

The first things we need to know are:

1) Have the engineers been able to replicate the issue?

2) Can they confirm that the issue appears only after updating to v62?

3) Can they confirm whether the issue lies in the Meta link app or the headset itself?

thanks.

Guys, I know this will frustrate you, but I don't have any problems. I use a 5m usb-c<->usb-c cable, on port 3.2 (5 Gbps). The usb speed test in pc oculus app shows 2 Gbps speed.

I never saw the message.

Details?

How long have you been playing?

Are you on V62?

Is it a powered cable?

Please dont be like "i dont have problems, so its not a problem"...

The amount of posts about this problem makes clear its a V62 problem!

I just said that I don't have the problem, not that there is no problem...

- v62 firmware of course: Version: 62.0.0.260.343.566123828, Runtime: 62.0.0.257.341.566161015
- I usually play with it for 1-2 hours at a time without taking it off
- it is not a powered cable
- my settings: 90Hz, native resolution, 200 fixed mbps
- usb port 3.2 Gen2 (10 Gbps)
-oculus app speed test: quest 3 <-> pc = 1.9 Gbps

I don't know why, but I haven't seen the message even once.
