Question

USB-C Port Disabled, water and debris - there is none. Probable Hardware Issue?

There is something inherently wrong with the Quest 3 USB-C port.

Anytime I attempt to charge the device while using it, I get a pop up and it starts beeping a warning saying that the USB-C port has been disabled for dust and debris.

There is absolutely not dust or debris. I know this for a fact because I exchanged a unit with a new one, took it straight out of the box with no liquid or dust in sight - and the brand new unit does the same thing.

I am using the most current software / firmware as of September 2024.

This may be a hardware issue as it appears not everyone gets this issue. I’ve seen Meta marking several of these as solved when it isn’t, which makes me believe that this may be a known hardware issue.

Hopefully meta fixes the issue in future production.

I currently updated to the latest firmware update...and today I saw that disabled type C outlet message bc of water or debris ..     nothing is in their . I even tried cleaning it out .. nothing...

It will charge fine when using a power cord straight to the outlet... ( no adapter.) Method .

What's bothering me now is . When I plug in the elite strap w battery cable into the quest 3s.. it doesn't recognize that it..  when I plug in a power cable into the elite strap w battery head unit.. the green light flashings over and over and doesn't charge the elite head unit at all ..

Now. When I use the elite head unit w battery on my quest 3.. it works properly..  I can charge the elite battery while it's plugged into the quest 3.. I can click the power button once and it shows me how much life their is in the headset and the elite head unit..

So why it's my quest 3s acting up while my quest 3 is perfectly fine ?

Is this a firmware problem ? Type c outlet problem ?  Another component on the motherboard of the quest 3s ?

I don't know if your situation is the same as mine was. It is a bit difficult understanding what you wrote. Around 8 months after I bought my Quest 3 headset, I got the water debris issue. I replaced my default USB C cord with a completely brand new one and the issue went away. I always have the USB C cord plugged into the default charger which is in turn plugged into a 20 foot extension cord that I have fastened to my waist. So pretty much the charger is being worn on my hip. I think that I was spitting in the toilet and got some spit on the USB cord and ever since then the Quest 3 headset would not fully accept that USB C cord anymore. So what I am saying is, if you have a brand new USB C cord that you can replace yours with, it might be worth a try. I keep spare Anker ones now, just in case. But who knows, your problem might be different from mine.

Hi everyone,

I've been dealing with the frustrating "USB-C port disabled - liquid or debris" error on my Quest 3 for a while. The problem is that my headset won't charge using a standard USB-C to USB-C cable, even though there's no visible damage, water, or debris in the port. It's basically a glorified brick for charging.

After trying everything from factory resets to cleaning the port, I finally found a workaround that points to a software bug, not a hardware issue.

Here’s the key finding:

  • USB-C to USB-C cable: DOES NOT work. The headset gives the error and refuses to charge.
  • USB-A to USB-C cable: WORKS. The headset charges normally.

This alone was a big clue, but here's the definitive test:

  • I took a new, high-quality USB-C to USB-C cable that was failing to charge my headset.
  • I connected a USB-A adapter to the end of the cable that plugs into the power source (like a laptop or wall charger).
  • I plugged it in, and the headset STARTED CHARGING NORMALLY.

What This Means

This proves that the problem is not a physically broken port. The port's power lines are fine. The issue is a software bug in the Quest's firmware that affects the Power Delivery (PD) protocol.

The USB-C to USB-C negotiation is failing, causing the "disabled" error. By using a USB-A adapter, we bypass this "smart" negotiation and force the headset to simply accept a standard charge.

The Solution for now

If you have this problem, your headset is likely not broken. The simple workaround is to charge it using a USB-A to USB-C cable or by using a USB-A adapter with your existing USB-C to USB-C cable.

Thanks for figuring out the answer.

It would be nice if the moderators promote this to both being the workaround and to the dev team so they can fix this needless error message.

Also of note: for me at least, this message doesn't prevent the headset from charging. It just gives me this message each time I unplug and wake it.

this is a rediculous problem. i regret buying my quest headset. I use it mostly for PCVR through oculus app. i sim race and this alert pops up and completly disables the screen and my view. ive had crashed is league level races due to this. this alert should not disable to entire VR session. I am going to make a youtube video reviewing the quest3, this will def be the main topic of the video.

I'm getting the same problem, Oct. 2025.

On Reddit it looks like someone has figured out that it's a USB-C negotiation problem with the Quest firmware. The workaround appears to be using an A-to-C cable instead of a C-to-C cable.

Brand new Meta Quest 3, and 2nd day I had the same message than everyone here. I have a Kiwi USB C to USB A with a USB C splitter to charge in the same time. I still have this message, 4 ou 5 times in 1 hour, it depends. More I search, more I found people with this annoying bug, and still no answer. Can the Kiwi cable can be faulty?

A lot of people have reported this problem with 3rd-party headstraps w/ battery. Try always powering off the headset before connecting or disconnecting the power cable. I have to do so, even with the official Elite headstrap. Also make sure you are not applying force on the USB connectors or pulling on the cable while playing, as it could cause a poor electrical contact.

OK - So it's now AUGUST 2026 - and I'm still getting debris/water error message when using Q3 with meta supplied cable and plug in power supply. Have tried cleaning USB 3 (both ends with a compressed air blower) - waste of my time - and then tried a brand new uprated 35W power supply with a brand new usb c cable straight out of the box - SAME problem - "liquid or debris" error on my screen.

Q3 says my software is up to date - V83 with number 5156388.1465.520.

Am I correct in thinking this issue remains unresolved for the last two years?

Can somebody please let me know if they are still experiencing this issue? As I'm close to throwing my Quest 3 in the bin.

Thanks

The power supply must support the "PD" (Power Delivery) charging protocol. Standard USB PD-non compliant power adapters are not supported. Chargers that use proprietary charging standards such as QC (Quick Charge) might not work, depending on which version of the standard they use.

But if the error persists, then you have a faulty USB port or other hardware fault.
