What Wifi 6e routers currently works bug free with the Quest 3?

Hi! Just wanted to post here to get a seperate thread going. As of today there is a major bug in communication between Quest 3 and certain types of Router models.

So let's get a list started on Wifi 6e routers that actually work. What Router do you have experience with being stable at 2400 Mbps in dedicated 6e mode?

Remember to post Router name and model and screen grabs/video from the Quest 3 showing the speed. (Turn on experimental wifi settings to do so.)

This is by no account a list that is for everyone. So far I found that some of the more expensive models between 350-700$/€ have been reported to work. So meta still has a major bug to fix. But if you can afford it, this might be is a way around the problem…

___________________________________________________________________________________________________

The bug explained:

There is a bug with negotiation rates with certain router models. Essentially AX and AXE models but more might also be affected. I have been investigating this bug since launch and finally both Meta and TP-Link have confirmed that the Quest3s negotiation protokolls with the routers is very unstable. This problem is totally unrelated to VD or AirPlay functionality, but it's here you'll notice the problem.

As of right now the Mbps can flux from approximately 1080 to 1900 on 6G and ocasinaly dip down below 800. Making it stutter and glitch in latency.

On 5G it will flux between 1080 and 420 Mbps making it essentially unusable in wireless PC streaming.

Both Meta and TP-Link are currently investigating the problem.

Meta has stated that the problem will be fixed with a firmware build in the near future.

If your experiencing this bug and want to follow its progress you can follow this seperate thread:

Just as a 11/26/23 update to this topic, from everyone's feedback and my own experience the routers I'd feel safe recommending for most (but not all) countries are the below:

High-end featureset (Mesh capability, extensive network configuration options, and/or max range/signal)

1. ASUS GT-AX6000 (~$260 - 2.4ghz, 5ghz)

2. ASUS GT-AX11000 PRO (~$350 - 2.4ghz, 5ghz-1, 5ghz-2)

3. ASUS GT-AXE16000 (~$500 - 2.4ghz, 5ghz-1, 5ghz-2, 6ghz)

4. ASUS RT-AX88U PRO (~$260 - internal hardware nearly identical to GT-AX6000)

5. ASUS RT-AX86U PRO (~$220 - 2.4ghz, 5ghz; note: high end features, but range more limited vs the above)

All five of these routers use the same main CPU and wifi chipset.  The difference is mainly in band configuration, number of antennas, ports, etc.

Mid-range featureset (May not have mesh capability, limited configuration options, and/or lesser range)

1. MSI RadiX AXE6600 (~$190 - 2.4ghz, 5ghz, 6ghz)

I plan on trying the ASUS ZenWifi Pro ET12 as I have the added disadvantage of not being able to play near the main router.

I currently have the ASUS RT-AX88u Pro - but am having the typical Airlink stutter/lag/crash.  I'm hoping that a triband will allow me to give the quest its own band.

If it doesn't improve the wifi in my home and the quest then back it goes.

Do you have any settings you would like to share?  Or settings that are DO NOT USE?

The Zen Wi-Fi is a no-go

If you want tri-band I would get the GT-AX11000 Pro, gt-axe16000, or MSI Radix axe6600

Also I don't think crashing is normal even for people with problems. You may want to make sure you don't have VPN enabled or some other issue with your PC

That model is problematic at 6 GHz w/ Q3 I don't think there is any way to get it to work right now

Known good 6ghz routers that seem to work for most -

MSI RadiX AXE6600

ASUS GT-AXE16000

I have heard some people not finding the 6Ghz on MSI Radix AXE6600. But my situation is worst. I can not find even the 5Ghz band on ASUS RT-AXE7800 !

MSI laptop (4080), Asus RT-AXE7800 running on 6GHz band, Gigabit download, Quest 3.
My stress test is virtual desktop / aerofly with moderate terrain settings / running fighter jet max speed close to ground and looking down from side window => rapid refresh and it's 100% smooth. Haven't yet tried high terrain.

Yesterday I purchased the TP Archer AXE7800 since it’s on sale for $199. Tested it with half life alyx and we got a winner guys. This router has a 2.5Gbps wlan if that even matters. The speed did fluctuate but did not go under 1921Mbps the experience was completely different than running my eero 6 mesh routers. I did not get any stuttering at all like I did with the eero. 6.

I received the MSI RadiX AXE6600 yesterday, and I'm still testing it. I can confirm it works extremely well with both Virtual Desktop and Air Link (though it seems to work better with VD, which isn't a surprise). I'm playing at 400-500Mbps in H264+ and it's perfect !

I am planning to make a video soon to show how it performs with VD and Air Link on multiple games, I'll let you know when it's done 😉

BTW I'm from France and I ordered the router directly from the official MSI France Store. I had no issue finding the 6GHz band and I have no issue with any device connected to this router.

I also have a Quest 2, so I will also test how the RadiX performs with 2 headsets simultaneously (Q2 on 5GHz and Q3 on 6GHz).

I did some tests again in HL Alyx with my ASUS RT-AXE7800.

* On 5ghz I have stable 5ms network latency with 1-2 spikes in 15 minutes of gameplay that is normal. Maybe I have to lower the channel bandwidth from 160 to 80..Movement was fantastic without frame drops. AV1 200Mbit and ultra resolution, 45ms latency on a RTX 4070. On VD statistics it fluctuates between 2141-2401.

* On 6Ghz (I finally connected with some tricks !) things are not so good. It fluctuates between 1721-2141, 7ms network latency and random network spikes (every 4-5 minutes). Hope for a future fix with a Quest update for 6ghz band.

Distance of the router is 4m

Hello ! May I ask you what tricks got you connected to the 6GHz band ? Some people reported that they couldn't see the 6GHz band on the RadiX, and I was wondering if your tricks would solve the issue.

About your AXE7800 on 6GHz, would it be possible for you to try it at a closer distance and at the same height than your head ? I read some comments saying it stabilized the signal a lot.

I did the following :

* Add the network of 6ghz manually.Write down Name, Security protocol and passkey. Then add network on the Quest and enter it manually without scanning.

* Go into your connection settings in the stored 6ghz network, Scroll down to Privacy. Click the dropdown and choose "Use device MAC".

* Set the "beacon internal" in your wifi 6ghz router settings to 50

* Set the wifi channel to as high as possible

I will test the AXE7800 on 6GHz at a closer distance but I can not test it at the same height of my head because of mt setup.

Here is my opinion on the MSI RadiX AXE6600.
I can connect to the 6e GHz band without any problems (Germany). The MBps is stable at 2401 MBps. So far so good. But I get a lot of annoying stutters while playing Beat Saber, which didn´t occur with the Asus AXE 16000 and only occured sometimes (like 1 stutter each 10 min) with the Asus AXE 7800. I tried every setting available on the MSI AXE 6600, tried every channel, changed the location of the router, but the router isn´t working well enough for my expectations.

Edit: I played right after this post and had no stutters after disabling PSC and changing to channel 49 ..... I will test the AXE6600 some more days (since it´s 1/3 of the price of the Asus AXE16000) and will report back...

Hello,

i have the Same Router and im from Germany aswell.

do you mind telling me the Rest of your settings? If you still have a stable connection

6Ghz?
160 MHz

Did You disable something under the advanced Settings?

Under the Wif-settings I disabled the 5 GHz band. For the 6 GHz band I activated 160 Mhz, disabled PSC (this made a huge difference for me) and chose channel 49 (you have to try for yourself which channel is the best for you).

Furthermore, I configured the router as AP (under advanced -> administration).

Once the router is set to  AP mode, the IP where I can access the settings from the browser changed. You can find out the new IP via the windows command promt using "arp -a". For me the new IP was for example "http://192.168.137.229/index.html".

There are still some stutters while playing. I guess the router is a wise choice regarding the budget. If you want the best router available, I would suggest the Asus ROG AXE16000 (if you need Wifi 6e).

FYI no mention of wi-fi improvement in v60 release notes:

I have no improvement. Based on my own experience, there is something going on with the headset itself because:

1. I reset my headset with v59. I got solid 5ms network latency in VD.

2. Without playing at all, wait a night. Re-run the test the next morning. Latency go back to 10ms and unstable. Sometime it shoot up to 150ms.

3. Upgraded to v60 without reset, I got solid 4ms network latency. Total latency drop to 25ms.

4. Not playing at all and wait for a night. Re-run like I did before on the next monring. Same **bleep** happen.

So, in fact, the headset can work flawlessly. We just dont know what happen after a couple of hours.

Reading all this info I wondering is it even worth it buying wi-fi 6E router if 5g does the job as long as it have 2400mbps.
Second thing is I got 2 sets of quest 3, and probably need powerful router router with at least 2 bands as strong as 2400mbps or 2 separate with 2400mbps each? I got 2 pc for them too. But on the other hand my second pc is only RTX 3060 strong, do it really need that 2400 speed? any thoughts will be helpful.

1. the main benefit of 6ghz is not having to compete with other networks for the 2400mbps 160mhz bands.  the quest 3 only supports two 160mhz bands in 5ghz, the one that begins at channel 36, and the one the begins at channel 100.  if there are a lot of overlapping networks in your area (you can test with a phone app), then 6ghz will likely have less interference.  If there aren't any overlapping, 6ghz wont be any better than 5ghz.

2. Having two quest 3 does make it more complicated, and something like the GT-AXE16000 that has four bands would allow you to dedicate the 2nd 5ghz band to one quest and a 6ghz band to the other quest, while your main network uses the 2.4ghz and 1st 5ghz band.  If you don't want to spend that much, you could try the GT-AX11000 PRO which is triband (but not 6ghz, it is 2.4/5ghz-1/5ghz-2).
