What Wifi 6e routers currently works bug free with the Quest 3?

Hi! Just wanted to post here to get a seperate thread going. As of today there is a major bug in communication between Quest 3 and certain types of Router models.

So let's get a list started on Wifi 6e routers that actually work. What Router do you have experience with being stable at 2400 Mbps in dedicated 6e mode?

Remember to post Router name and model and screen grabs/video from the Quest 3 showing the speed. (Turn on experimental wifi settings to do so.)

This is by no account a list that is for everyone. So far I found that some of the more expensive models between 350-700$/€ have been reported to work. So meta still has a major bug to fix. But if you can afford it, this might be is a way around the problem…

___________________________________________________________________________________________________

The bug explained:

There is a bug with negotiation rates with certain router models. Essentially AX and AXE models but more might also be affected. I have been investigating this bug since launch and finally both Meta and TP-Link have confirmed that the Quest3s negotiation protokolls with the routers is very unstable. This problem is totally unrelated to VD or AirPlay functionality, but it's here you'll notice the problem.

As of right now the Mbps can flux from approximately 1080 to 1900 on 6G and ocasinaly dip down below 800. Making it stutter and glitch in latency.

On 5G it will flux between 1080 and 420 Mbps making it essentially unusable in wireless PC streaming.

Both Meta and TP-Link are currently investigating the problem.

Meta has stated that the problem will be fixed with a firmware build in the near future.

If your experiencing this bug and want to follow its progress you can follow this seperate thread:

Did some digging and found router just for PC VR streaming, so ordered 1 PrismXR Puppis S1 on amazon, will give feedback in 10 days when I receive it, found ton of positive feedback about this device on Reddit too for quest3. It look like a steal for only 80Usd

I found a working router that can pair with Quest 3. The Xiaomi BE6500 Pro with a Qualcomm chipset IPQ5332 within the Qualcomm Immersive Home 3210 Platform.

Previously, I used ASUS AC86U and Tp-link AX1800, but they both cannot maintain a stable connection. The latency is very unstable, fluctuating between 10 to 150ms every few mins.

AX1800

The screenshot shows the latency is stabling at 13ms.

Now, I have a stable 4-6ms networking latency. I tested 3 times without rebooting the computer, router, and headset in the last 12 hours. This is a necessary step cause many ppl including me all encounter a very good result at the beginning, but all the sudden, everything goes south in a couple of hours.

II managed to have a good wireless connection with my quest 3... I had bought a Tenda Wifi 6E but it was catastrophic, so I returned it and waited while looking at various forums.
Following various opinions, I decided to test with an Asus ROG AX6000 which "only" does Wifi6, and I am very satisfied with it.
I configured it as an AP, I connected the Quest 3 alone on the 5ghz band.
I configured the 5ghz band to 160 MHz and set the channel to 100.
Now I have 2400 fixed on VD continuously and I can play Asgard Wrath wirelessly, whereas before this was impossible.

Yes, the AX6000 was the only one that worked for me as well. Only thing I have to ensure is that my vpn app is disconnected first. That for me caused lots of stutter. It was 'Ruined' here that suggested that and the router too. It's been fabulous. Havent had a bad day with the Quest 3 since late October really. Only thing I was annoyed about was having to spend double my budget to get this working. Shouldn't have to.

I think people should start PM'ing Zuckerberg directly. Deal with the Organ Grinder, not the Monkey's.

I will add this to the pile of comments...hard to keep track of everything sadly.

Premise: on 5 GHz 80 MHz I was playing completely fine, I just wanted an upgrade because I wanted perfection and no micro stutters. Sadly some micro stutters are always there and I will just deal with them I guess. Before the "upgrade" I was using the 5 GHz 80 MHz of my FritzBox router...where also all other devices were connecting. I then got the Asus AXE7800 as additional router, where only the Quest 3 (on wifi) and my PC (on ethernet) connect.

What I can say is that when trying to use Wifi 6E with an Asus AXE7800, the SSID for the Quest 3 would either appear in the list after many seconds (even minutes) or not appear at all. I blame the router. That said, once connected, the Quest would stay connected and stable at 2400mbps, which seems to be the capped bandwidth for the Quest 3 (despite working with Wifi 6E, it will not go up to 4800mbps).

I think I will just keep the router (as second router set as AP) since I am tried of fiddling and nobody says another Wifi 6E router will work differently. I will probably just keep using the Quest 3 with Wifi 6 (5 GHz 160 MHz, so 2400mbps) since that SSID is found instantly and doesn't seem to work any worse compared to the 6 GHz SSID (which is a pain to find for some reason).

This is actually an extremely common issue with the Quest 3. Happens on both TP Link routers I have tried (AXE75 and AXE95). The solution is to have the 2.4 GHz band enabled in conjunction with the the 6 GHz band and the SSID will connect without a hitch and doesn't take minutes or several refreshes to appear. You can check the "Hide SSID" box for the 2.4 GHz band and, if the option is available to you, can set the transmit power of the band to "Low" to avoid any possible interference (there likely won't be any to begin with).

I will try that. For the moment I have 2.4 GHz hidden and 5 + 6 Ghz visible (though only the 5GHz appears consistently, and is Wifi 6)

I noticed on the Quest 3 if I put manually the 6 GHz SSID and the password, it will connect instantly but even if auto connect is on, the next time it will not connect because it doesn't see the SSID I guess...and even by saving the network, you cannot connect (if it thinks then network is not there...is not the same as for the others where you can click "connect" manually if autoconnect is disabled). Means if you want to re-connect, you should remove the saved 6GHz network and re-add it manually again...and it will connect again instantly...but honestly too much work to do every time.

Asus ZenWifi ET8, single unit in standalone AP mode. 2.4 and 5GHz bands disabled, MU-MIMO and OFDMA disabled for the 6GHz band, channel 197 with width set to 160MHz, band steering & roaming assistant disabled. Most other things left at default.

VD holds 2400Mbs for hour plus while tweaking an iRacing setup, zero micro stutters, super smooth. Network latency 4-5ms with no deviation (outside of loading in).

Zyxel NWA220AX6E, same setup as above, again no issues. Link for the Zyxel for anyone that can't seem to find it and is interested: https://a.co/d/bZdDCej

Based on recommendations on this thread I purchased the MSI Radix AXE6600. Quest 3 is working great on its 6GHz band, connected first try and stays locked to 2401 Mbps as long as I keep line of site to the router. In the next room over it does drop to 1300-1400 Mbps when going through a wall, but still keeps 90fps 99% of the time with minor drops to 86.

I purchased the same router but i cant find the 6g band.  It only showed up a couple of time for a 10 secondo. Which settings are you using for the 6ghz WiFi?

Wireless Mode: 6GHz 802.11 ax only
Broadcast SSID: True
Frequency (Channel): Auto
PSC: Enable
Channel Width: 160 MHz
Security Mode: WPA3-PSK
Key Update Interval: 86400 (default value)

I am using the router in Access Point mode, but I wouldn't think that would matter for connecting. I was able to connect with the default settings under the Advanced options, and also after I turned off MU-MIMO and turned on Multicast-to-Unicast.

I have the 2.4GHz band disabled as I didn't need it, the 5GHz band is enabled.

I have an MSI Radix GRAXE66 working in Virtual Desktop both with Godlike/AV1/200 mbps and Ultra/H264+/500 mbps, and also Airlink at 800 mbps (although I haven't tested that very long; it generally looks worse than VD due to being stuck at lower encoding resolution).

I put the router in AP mode and changed some of the settings (Disable PSC and set to Channel 49, Disable Mu-MIMO, Enable Unicast to Multicast). I am not sure whether or not the settings changes made a difference. Disabling PSC seemed to help, but I need to test more to be sure.

One major suggestion I have is to make sure that you are actually having network issues and not encoder/decoder issues. The VD overlay can be misleading in some cases.

I thought I was having intermittent stutters due to network issues because the VD overlay showed a network latency spike, but it turned out that it was actually either the encoder on my GPU (Radeon 7900 XTX) or the decoder on the Quest 3 getting bogged down. I was trying to run 500 mbps H264 at Godlike resolution, and it seems like that was just too high. Dropping down to Ultra resolution fixed the issues I was having. Unfortunately, it took me many hours of tearing my hair out before I finally realized what the problem was.

So, if you're getting major stutters every minute or two, it may be worth trying to drop down to a lower resolution in VD and see if that helps at all. Another indication that you may be on the edge of the encoder/decoder is if you can run at 90 FPS no problem, but have major stutters if you increase to 120 FPS. It may also look like motion is not completely smooth, like things are hitching a little bit or moving unevenly between each frame (even though FPS appears to be solid). Based on my experience, those things can in some cases be a sign of encoding/decoding issues, rather than network issues.

Hello, I bought the 7900 XTX this week and sent it back right away. It has major encoder issues : while I was able to get a stable H264+ 500Mbps with the RadiX and the RTX 3080 Ti, the 7900 XTX got me huge stutters. On VD overlay, I could see that it was encoding issues. So it's a great GPU for gaming, but a terrible one for wireless PCVR. From what I've tested, you would have a much better experience with a 4070 Ti, even though it's technically less powerful πŸ˜‰

How bad is it? The encoding latency. Have you tried HEVC 10bits?

Greetings, mates!

Since it is almost impossible to buy any of AXE routers in my country, I am only able to order some of them abroad. I can see that some of users are very satisfied with MSI Radix AXE6600, but this model is not available.....well anywhere πŸ™‚

Can someone please tell me if there is any issues with exact model Asus RT-AXE11000 with MQ3 (headset is unable to find wifi network e.t.c)?

I don't think the exact model RT-AXE11000 exists πŸ™‚

Can you find the GT-AX6000 or GT-AX11000 PRO? those are the non-AXE ones with the updated broadcom chipset a lot of people are finding success with

There is a GT-AXE11000, but that one uses an older chipset

Oh, sorry, my bad. That's right, I meant GT-AXE11000. So, it's not relevant nowadays? - Got it.

I am not sure about GT-AX6000 or GT-AX11000 PRO availability in my country, but I will check it out. Thank you.

But what model of AXE router is the most preferable for MQ3?

I have a GT-AX6000, which I picked up a few weeks ago based on the good advice in this thread.

After configuring the router for 160 mhz, it establishes a ~2400 mbps connection to the Quest 3, which is used about 4 meter from the router.

But after shutting down the Quest 3, the next time I turn it on it always connects at 1200 mbps. So far the only way I’ve found to re-establish a 2400 mbps connection is to go back into router settings, change the channel and reboot the router. It then connects again at 2400 Mbps.

The Quest 3 is the only device on this dedicated router, it’s white listed via MAC address, only the 5 GHz radio is enabled. Right now, I have the channel configured to 100. The general purpose WiFi router has its 5 GHz channel set to 36.

Any thoughts on settings I should change to persist 2400 Mbps from the dedicated router to Quest 3 in between sessions?

When this happens it means your router is detecting external interference (like radar or another network) somewhere on the 160mhz channel and is dropping back to 80mhz. There is nothing you can do other than try different channels.  One thing you can try is to put the general router on the 100 block at 1200mbps and put the quest3 router on 36 block and see if you can maintain 160mhz there.  Or you can just try running everything on the GT-AX6000 on the 36 block if your other router cant do DFS.  Or you can lay out the cash for the GT-AXE16000 πŸ™‚
