The omni, and cyberith virtualiser both have their strengths. I hope to get my hands on both to be honest, the omni will probably not be good for crouching games as the cyberith, but I think the walking seems more natural on the omni.. don't know ofcourse coz I havent tried yet.

We (RoadToVR) managed to get an Interview with Tuncay Cakmak, inventor of the Cyberith Virtualizer and it's now online here:

..hope you enjoy it. Also, Tuncay is interested in any suggestions anyone has for improvements or software projects which might work well with the device. Give him a shout (links on the article).

Hey guys!

Here is the newest Video of the Virtualizer:

We are working hard on the development, so if you have any desires, feel free to write me info@cyberith.com

We are not building the Virtualizer for us, we are building it for the VR community, we are building it for you guys!!

Im very excited about the future of gaming.... I want to play some nice FPS with you guys in VR!!!

Our next steps are: Game-City Convention in Vienna at 27. - 29. September, Development of the software for analog movements like analog walking,running.... analog crouching; planning and preparing for crowd funding

- Tuncay Cakmak, BECAUSE REALITY IS NOT ENOUGH.....

I am looking forward to the day this device is for sale both in Europe and the US and hope you look into manufacture in both places to lower shipping costs. I think these omnidirectional movement and other forms of input will only grow over time as the Oculus rift hits its commercial release.

ah yes the original prototypes were from a branch of Sega I believe...

Horizon Entertainment.

they released a few VR games in the early 90's and then went dark... they became a one client business, creating VR units for DoD wargame simulations.

A new dawn IMO, boys and girls...

In my mind, THIS, along with so many of the other technologies I'm seeing uncorked with a post-pork barrel fork, signifies something very, very special. Something symbolic, and in my mind, meant as an olive branch.

This is the powers that be saying, "ok. no more cold war. new day, new century, fresh start, everybody gets a do-over, and THE PEOPLE get the stuff we spent their money on and wouldn't or couldn't share."

I know what I plan on trying to do with it, right off the bat, which is to try and help people who will benefit the most from this technology, and need it yesterday, and I'm certain will be delighted to be game testers.

And once again, this interface is a natural shoe in for Second Life.

good stuff =)

The cyberith guys postet an update with a new base plate material.
They are currently comparing the running motion on the Virtualizer with running on a "normal" treadmill.

Huh, that does look nice. I checked out the Omni at Quakecon, but they weren't allowing anybody besides staff on them the few times I stopped by. I'd love to sit down and feel the difference between a flat walking surface and a rounded dish, whether stopping mid-motion on a flat surface beats the sliding you get with the curved.

I could also see some potential applications for the moving ring in the future as a form of haptics that the omni won't have.

For me it'll probably come down to the solution that has the best tracking, offset by cost. Cyberith looks like a more complicated machine, which gives it advantages, but probably costs a bit more. Looking forward to seeing developments for both.

The Cyberith Virtualizer doesn't need any special shoes, you just slide with socks on a big, flat surface (not needing special shoes in any size for your friends and two pairs for you in case one pair breaks is a nice plus for the Virtualizer - also: intuitive ducking :-D ). This also means, that this will be less noisy!

I tested it at gamescom and must say that you get used to walking in it pretty quickly (I haven't, however tested the Omni yet).

I would expect the Virtualizer to be more expensive as it uses more complex technology and looked very robust and well made (at least the prototype). Without testing the Omni I can't tell which feels more natural tho. I expect a pre-order / Kickstarter soon, then we will know the price ;-)
