Leap Motion 3D Jam 2.0 starts Sept. 28th

It's back! For six weeks, starting on Sept. 28th, developers around the world will build innovative experiences for virtual reality, desktop, mobile, and beyond.

Last year’s competition was incredible, with over 150 submissions and some really amazing titles. For 3D Jam 2015, teams will compete in two tracks – Open and AR/VR. We’re giving away over $50,000 in prizes. Entries will be accepted until November 9th, 2015 at 11:59:59 pm PST.

    Hi Alex,

An email was sent out today regarding the Jam with this message pertaining to UE4:
    Unreal
Available directly through Unreal Engine 4.9, the Leap Motion Unreal plugin provides a fast and easy way to add virtual hands to your games. We also have a Demo Pack that shows you how to use many of the plugin’s features. The latest version of the plugin even features image passthrough.

It’s important to know that we’re still building out the full feature set for the Unreal plugin, including support for VR development. We have a fix in the works for an issue with the Character Actor, which is currently complicating VR development. In the meantime, we recommend using Unreal 4.8 with this cherrypick solution, or Getnamo’s community plugin. Watch this forum thread in the coming weeks as we continue to bring the integration up to speed!

Does this mean that we will not see an update in the next couple weeks that fixes these issues and adds image hands?

    Thanks!

@alexcolgan, I found my issue and sorted it out, you can disregard my question about Unity. I still can't find the page I was talking about for the life of me. However, I did find out that the new "image hands" isn't even compatible with the newest version of Unity anyways. So, that feature is coming with the 0.7 support at some point, but I will keep things safe and use the 0.6 runtime and the latest Unity with integrated VR support and none of the created OVR prefab cameras.

For anyone interested and having the same issue as me using Unity 5.2.1 and the latest leap SDK w/ 0.6 Runtime Oculus, I simply did the following:

    • First and foremost, image hands does not currently work with newest unity. As far as I can understand, they are working on fixing this ASAP

    • Create a new project in unity

    • Import the latest leap integration package for unity (separate download to SDK)

    • Go under assets/leap/prefabs and look for the leap hands prefab for HMD (let me know if you want a more specific name, I'm going on memory here), drag that prefab into your hierarchy

    • In the HMD leap prefab's inspector, drag the "main camera" into the appropriate variable

    • Default is image hands, you need to drag a prefab for the hand model and physical model that's different than the image hands, as it will show up as a white fuzzy glove otherwise.

    • Check off the "Vr supported" in the preferences --> Player, you're good to go. It's actually pretty straightforward.

These steps are of course not necessary in earlier versions of Unity that support the older prefabs and image hands and such. It's got something to do with how the cameras work I think in the newest unity. In any case, just sharing how I did it, maybe it's wrong, let me know.

There are two development tracks running right now -- getnamo's community plugin, and the official plugin. Our hope is to have at least one featuring a working VR integration and Image Hands by mid-way next week at the latest.

Was it this forum thread? https://community.leapmotion.com/t/unit ... pdate/3269 Glad that you reached a solution -- Image Hands should be compatible with the latest version of Unity, just as long as the native VR plugin is disabled and the Oculus SDK is version 0.5.0.1.

The issue is indeed with the cameras, as the VR plugin doesn't allow adjustments to the virtual camera separation (which is really important to making augmented reality work properly, since they need to be aligned with the Leap Motion cameras in the real world). A solution is in the works but we're making sure that it's stable enough to release (which is tricky as the method used is a bit of a hack).

New update: Since we want to ensure that everyone has access to the latest features during the six-week 3D Jam, we strongly recommend using getnamo's community plugin. Image Hands support will take longer than we originally thought, so we're targeting mid-October. In the meantime, people can prototype their experiences using the rigged marionette hands included in the plugin. Sorry about the inconvenience -- we're working hard to make this happen.

    Hi Alex,

Do you know if this is still planned? I did not see an update (but maybe I missed it).

    Thanks and take care!
