Leap Motion 3D Jam 2.0 starts Sept. 28th

It's back! For six weeks, starting on Sept. 28th, developers around the world will build innovative experiences for virtual reality, desktop, mobile, and beyond.

Last year’s competition was incredible, with over 150 submissions and some really amazing titles. For 3D Jam 2015, teams will compete in two tracks – Open and AR/VR. We’re giving away over $50,000 in prizes. Entries will be accepted until November 9th, 2015 at 11:59:59 pm PST.

Sorry, but it looks like we won't be able to get the Image Hands release for UE4 locked in before the 3D Jam is over.

    Hi Alex,

Do you know if there will be a Leap Motion mounting bracket for the Rift Consumer Version?

    Thanks,

The mount should work with pretty much anything. More broadly, we haven't laid our hands on CV1, so it's too early to tell for certain whether it might cause any issues. My guess is that it will work just fine, barring any massive changes to the Unity VR integration to accommodate the 1.0 SDK, or to the Oculus positional tracking.

The DK2 actually includes more LEDs than strictly necessary, which allowed it to play well with the Leap Motion Controller. (This in itself was a smart design decision from the Oculus team, given how small and inexpensive the LEDs are, and given that they want to avoid tracking-breaking occlusions between the headset and the tracking camera as much as possible.) For that reason, I would guess that the positional tracking with CV1 will work just fine with a mounted controller. Though ultimately the proof will be in the pudding.

Thanks Alex! I look forward to finding out as CV1s begin shipping. Mine should arrive in March. :D

In my case, it would be Unreal Engine integration that impacts this, but what you say makes sense. Hopefully you are not planning to drop support for UE4.

Ah yes, I wasn't thinking. We're still looking to hire an Unreal engineer to help advance the official plugin, but getnamo has been an absolute hero for his efforts on the community plugin.

I don't know if I'm alone in this, but seeing how the current mount uses an adhesive, I don't think I'll be mounting the leap motion to the CV1 when I get it since it's made of fabric and I don't want to mess it up. I was thinking about it, is there a possibility of a 3D printed clip that goes over the whole thing? You could probably make a pretty cool clip that has a thin profile. Or, do you think the adhesive would be ok on the CV1?

Before I got the mount for my DK2, I found that masking tape around the edge of the leap worked well, but I would be hesitant to do this on the CV1 as well. I'm definitely interested in using the leap more though, it's really cool to use and experiment with.

    Hi Alex,

happy to see you now have a new feature called "Image Hands", this somehow seems like an advancement from the basic alphablend with background idea from dOculus - my entry on the Jam 1 year ago :)

You are projecting the hands on a mesh now, to have even more occulsion from overlapping near objects?

Thinking about how this alphablend-idea alone now making such an impact at leap motion, I am still a bit disappointed to not even have become an entry as honorable mention in that 3D Jam - I bet none of the winners had such an inspiration for your development.
