Lets make a SDK 0.4 Linux nagging thread!

Since there is no official response as to the status of Linux & OSX I am creating a thread.

I think that cross platform developers shouldn't be treated as second-class citizen. Perhaps this is of no concern and the SDK is on it's way as we are posting, but I'd like to make sure we aren't over looked! ;)
The new way of treating the rift as a specialized device using the windows runtime & driver might complicate things, or not. But before there is further speculation it would be really, really nice if some oculus rep gives us a short heads up. :)

update: thanks for the OSX release, how long until we've got Linux?

Duh, my DK2 will be catching dust for at least another 2 weeks.

0.4.2 out and still no Linux support. This sucks. :(

Before my time, so for the old timers... was DK1's Linux support like this? (complete silence from Oculus developers/developer relations)

Does anyone know who's working on the Linux drivers or has talked to them and asked what the holdup is?

Well, it hasn't been complete silence. They still list Linux compatibility, so presumably it's still on their roadmap. And yes, for DK1, there was a long delay between the release of the Windows / Mac support and Linux support. In fact, the creation of my Github repository was specifically spurred by the desire to get Linux support working for the DK1 (which I did, about a week or so before Oculus finally released their own SDK with Linux support).

Doing this kind of work for the DK2 / SDK 0.4.x simply isn't feasible for me though. First off, I don't have the kind of free time I used to, since I'm working on the book in addition to my day job. Second, because the positional tracking is all closed source, supporting it would basically require duplicating the same work the Oculus has already put into converting the camera image of the LEDs into an absolute position. I could probably watch the talks given on the topic on youtube and do some reading and eventually reproduce it, but again, no free time.

At least with the DK2 you can still use it via the 0.3.x SDK, albeit without positional tracking. Meanwhile, if anyone out there is particularly skilled at doing the required transforms to convert a camera image of the LEDs into a position, maybe we could collaborate on producing a community version of the 0.4.x SDK for Linux. Otherwise, all I can recommend is patience, settling for 0.3.x, or a windows development environment.

Hasn't it, though? Back when we got 0.3.2, they didn't bother to do Unity Integration for Linux - but we had to ask about it to make sure.. the documentation still had all the instructions for Linux (apparently only the version-number was changed).

    viewtopic.php?f=34&t=9250
"Linux is not supported in the 0.3.2 Unity integration. We are planning to support it again soon."-vrdaweb

After that, a new kernel caused drift and yaw issues with the DK1, and we were told that they were looking into it, and that a fix would be available soon:
    viewtopic.php?f=34&t=9689
"We really are looking into this issue. We've reproduced it on our end and found the root cause. As soon as a fix is available, we'll make sure it gets rolled into the next release." -vrdaweb
"Yeah, we are aware of this and are looking into it." -cybereality

Then came the next SDK (0.4), for Windows only. SDK 0.4.1 added Mac support - again Linux wasn't even mentioned, and I don't think I've seen anything Linux related from Oculus since (?)

Received my DK2 today. However, as Linux is my primary development platform, I can't actually use it yet :( Please add Linux support to SDK 0.4.

Guys, you must update your sales pages to correct the false statements about Linux support. This has gone beyond a short delay.

The DK2 does not support Linux and you must stop advertising it as such.

Would really love a timeline on when Linux support will be available. As alluded to by others - the advertising really needs to be corrected if there's no intention of supporting it.

Yes, this is true. I feel cheated. I only made the purchase because of the supposed Linux support. This is false advertising. :(

If the team were more vocal about it, and says that they are having problems with XYZ, I would most certainly understand and be patient about it, but the fact that they are telling us what at this point are straight up lies and completely ignoring us about any queries is absolutely ridiculous. If I didn't know better I would think it is a scam.

Or alternatively if they hadn't closed the source of the runtime, someone would have implemented it on Linux by now.
