Lets make a SDK 0.4 Linux nagging thread!

Since there is no official response as to the status of Linux & OSX I am creating a thread.

I think that cross platform developers shouldn't be treated as second-class citizen. Perhaps this is of no concern and the SDK is on it's way as we are posting, but I'd like to make sure we aren't over looked! ;)
The new way of treating the rift as a specialized device using the windows runtime & driver might complicate things, or not. But before there is further speculation it would be really, really nice if some oculus rep gives us a short heads up. :)

update: thanks for the OSX release, how long until we've got Linux?

I've been away for a bit, so I had to look up what the Oculus Connect was.

I'm shocked that a social gathering has a higher priority than finishing a (advertised) promise. With the FB buyout, I'm sure there is much flexibility with "them" doing marketing, and letting the actual team code...but I guess not. :?:

To be fair you can't conclude how the staff assignments work based on the worth of the company. I think OVR is still a relatively small operation where some tasks are performed by basically everybody. So coders might have to take part in the preparations of marketing material and take part in the exhibition.

The Linux SDK is being worked on, we haven't abandoned it. Everyone here is busy getting ready for Oculus Connect, so the bandwidth is spread pretty thin. Once the event is over, people on the team should have some time to dedicate to get this out the door. Sorry for the delay.

Just adding my voice to the call for a (new) Linux SDK.

I'm having loads of troubles getting DK2 to work with 0.3.2, and it seems to be time gone to waste if 0.4.0 is coming shortly...

Good luck on the Ocuulus Connect event and hope to see new Linux support soon!

I am also waiting for the DK2 Linux support, because it is my (our) primary platform for development & content creation. I really hope that Linux is not regarded as an afterthought within the Oculus company, and want to believe it has some truly knowledgeable Linux developers employed. It is hard not to get a little anxious and doubtful as time goes, but hopefully the Linux runtime/SDK will be worth the wait.

As a Linux User Group founder. I think the Oculus rift is doing their product a disservice by ignoring Linux. It appears to me that all their efforts are focused on Windows. This is unfortunate since many Linux users and developers are very technical. In my opinion, supporting Linux should be a priority at Oculus. Where is the SDK 0.4 for Linux ? When will it be released ? Yes project managers will be happy with one supported OS. But, my guess is that not all Oculus Rift customers are project managers. By leaving Linux developers out of the main SDK package Oculus may be able push out newer versions of SDK faster, but things may backfire if the Linux community feels snubbed. PR with the Linux community should be considered. Additionally, there is a push by a lot of organisations to move away from Windows for gaming. Steam has their on turn key solution for example. Vesting all your resources in a Windows solution may be sort sighted for your future if you really want Oculus's VR headset to take off.

Not sure if this was posted already but the Windows SDK Documentation is already quite specific about the Linux SDK4. Since it says "coming soon" I suspect there is a prototype and it wont take them long to publish it.

I just ordered the DK2 because it stated Linux was supported. A significant lag in releasing the Linux SDK over other platforms is very worrying and is making me wonder if it was a good decision to take a chance on the Rift.
