Rift Ray-tracing

[EDIT] This now has a demo, but I'll keep the link here up to date.

(Updated to 12 Meg. Ver 0.50 on the Twentieth of June in the Year Twenty-Thirteen)).

Hi All,

I haven't got my Rift yet (UK near the end of the Kickstarter), but have been following the goings on with interest.

I've started to have a go at doing some CUDA based ray-tracing for VR and have managed to get some basic stuff going.

Rather than warping a resulting image I've made a start at modeling the lenses in the ray projection code.
(no texturing or shadows yet, just trying to get the distortion and stereo going.)

This is what I've got so far. It's probably waaaay out, but until I get my one, I'm flying blind. :D

Note: It's a bit wide to see in the post, you may need to open the image in another tab to see the entire screen.

Just finished watching Man of Steel and I think all this discussion of noise made me really sensitive to it. Movies contain a lot of noise even though they are mostly digital and filmed with a lot of light. I'm thinking a lot of it must have been added on purpose.

Edit, I just read that Christopher Nolan still films on photographic film. Maybe he insisted that Zack Snyder do the same and what I'm seeing is film grain (which then has to be simulated in all of the digital effects).

There were a couple of scenes where I actually saw rendering fireflys...

    Hi All,

    Update time. :D

I decided to nigh on re-write the thing. The good news is that it's up and running again. I also decided to try an outdoor scene, butchering Sponza in the process.

The new download is linked at the top of the thread, and here for convenience. Since the start up code has been been completely changed, it would be interesting to see if it goes boom more or less than the last version.

Let me know how you get on.

Is there any way I can tell if the demo is using the CPU or GPU?

it's only set up to use GPU at the moment...

OK, I was just surprised it ran on my Compute Model 1.0 GPU. (Might be 1.1)

There seems to be a lot of color fringing in your latest image. I'm guessing that your attempts at correcting chromatic aberration are not quite right.

Yeah. I'll try and sort that soon. Whenever you re-write things, it appears that something always goes out of whack.

Oh, I realized I sounded a bit negative last post. Great work. It is good to refactor while the code base is small :)

Not at all. :) I noticed it, but couldn't work out why it was going wrong. I tried re-calibrating it again, but still not sure I've got it right.

On another note, has anyone who had it crash on them before tried the new demo to see if it works for them now?

Worked for me (I only had issues with some of the earlier versions)...

    Looks good.
