Rift Ray-tracing

[EDIT] This now has a demo, but I'll keep the link here up to date.

Hi All,

I haven't got my Rift yet (UK near the end of the Kickstarter), but have been following the goings on with interest.

I've started to have a go at doing some CUDA based ray-tracing for VR and have managed to get some basic stuff going.

Rather than warping a resulting image I've made a start at modeling the lenses in the ray projection code.
(no texturing or shadows yet, just trying to get the distortion and stereo going.)

This is what I've got so far. It's probably waaaay out, but until I get my one, I'm flying blind. :D

Note: It's a bit wide to see in the post, you may need to open the image in another tab to see the entire screen.

Worked for me (I only had issues with some of the earlier versions)...
    Looks good.

Glad it's working still. I've done a few new things...
    Cube Map Sky...
    HDR Bloom
    Normal Mapping.
    It's night and day 8-)

I guess you are firmly in the camp of preferring lego bricks to jitter noise.

I really love how nice these images are otherwise. Bypassing the warp shader results in really nice images.

Still waiting for my rift to turn up, but by downloading your images, making them small and squinting at them I can merge the two images into one 3D one, and it looks neat!

Rift screenies don't work for cross-eyed viewing, the eyes are not swapped.

Squinting might be the wrong word... I kinda just relax my eyes until the images converge overlap on each-other, and the 3D is pretty noticeable.

I know what you mean, but if you are crossing your eyes in order to overlap side-by-side images that are meant for the Rift, the resulting crisp "3D" you see is NOT correct (the depths are reversedish and a little weird). People find it cool that a crisp image shows up, but the 3D is all wrong. If you instead swap the images (or look at it wall-eyed/parallel which I personally find impossible to do), the resulting overlaid images will suddenly make a LOT more sense with the cross-eyed approach!

You need to "wide-eye" view Rift images, by reducing their size (browser Crtl-mousewheel) until you can converge them while looking THROUGH the display glass at the 3D image behind the screen (like looking through a small window in your display monitor). Without reducing the image size, the image centers may be too far apart to do this comfortably (if at all).

I think that is essentially what I am doing.

So I looked at your examples...

For the first two images the hud is in front of everything else, on the third one, the planets are actually in front of the hud. I presume, then, that I am actually wide-eyeing, rather than cross-eyeing? I know that lots of people find it almost impossible to do, but I was born with a vision defect whereby I had a very poor vergence reflex, and I had to train it. As a result it is not as much of a reflex for me as for others, and as such I can kinda turn it off.

Anyhow, I don't want to hijack this thread any further. I think my rift is not too far away since they are setting up an AUS/NZL fulfilment centre soon.
