Rift with movies?

I'm just wondering if the Rift had the ability to make movies, such as Avatar, 3d. If it cannot, is there a way that someone would be able to make it so 3d movies with the rift are possible? I'm not talking about head movement in movies (that would be amazing) but I mean just for the 3d effect.
Thanks.

Am I wrong, or wouldn't you need to rip the 3D blu-ray movie to a avi, mkv, etc to use the various players that support the rift?

Bleh, tried 4 different computer stores and none of them had a 3D USB blu-ray player so i could use my rift with it... any suggestions for one online?

Are you looking for a blu-ray drive that you can plug into your computer through usb? You shouldn't have any trouble finding one of those online.

If you're looking for a standalone blu ray player to plug your Rift into you ought to quit while you're ahead. Maybe you've misunderstood some of the posts in this thread, but watching a movie with the Rift is unfortunately not that simple.

nono, i meant a USB 3d blu ray so i can run the blu ray from my pc and load it onto one of the players
    i chose this one:

That should work fine when plugged into a host PC or laptop with the Rift, as long as your content does not have HDCP issues. Movies that have copy protection may be a problem though, because applying Rift pre-warp requires access to the unencrypted digital content, which would violate HDCP licensing requirements.

There is some unencrypted Blu-Ray content available, but you may be disappointed.

There are Blu-Ray ripper programs available that can extract your copy-protected movie to your hard drive. As long as you own it the Blu-Ray disc, this may be legal or not, depending on your local laws.

Although not legal in many jurisdictions, many would consider it morally acceptable to download decrypted content you already own from "the bay of pirates", or whatever...

There are free ones too. I have not used anything since I ripped my DVD collection years ago. I do not have Blu-Ray.

There are usually some good "how to" guides at lifehacker, and they have one for what you want (with links to free software utilities):

The free stuff works pretty good from what I recall. Beware that depending on where you live, using such software may not be legal, but personal use is usually not an issue as long as you do not distribute media after you remove copy protection from it. If in doubt, check with your local laws.

So I bought a drive from the link. Last night it arrived, but I was unable to get it to play any Blu-Ray (2D or 3D) on my Vista machine. Tried Media Player, VLC, and a half-dozen other applications that claim to play Blu-Ray. It didn't come with a driver disc, but I don't think it's a driver issue. I'm able to browse and copy M2TS and SSIF files off a Blu-Ray (I checked, the copies aren't blank files), but I don't know what codecs I could be missing to play them.
Tonight I'll keep trying, and see if anything from the "Hassle-Free Guide" helps me out.

Yeah they are getting a negitive/netral review from me due to refusal to communicate. Try powerdvd, mine worked with regular and m 3d blu ray disk.

Anyways, 3d experts, i got the disk drive and a movie and softwere that can play the movie in side-by-side. Can i just use the side by side mode with the oculus for the 3d?

There's a player at http://3dtv.at that has Rift support. I've tried it out with some 3D movies and it's passable.

Same as Nvidia Video-player without Oculus Rift support.
