Screen Brightness Issue

Hey, I have been trying to figure out exactly what has been causing a brightness issue with the rift. I noticed in dark areas in demos and scenes that I have been building in unity that the right eye is always darker. I decided to see exactly what was going on. I googled around and noticed other people complaining about the same issue, but the issue was never resolved nor pinpointed. One person mentioned that it may be an issue with the note screen being overclocked to 75hz. The same problem was apparent when I switched the rift from 75hz to 60hz, so I don't believe that it has to to with the overclock. I took a printscreen and compared the values which were exactly the same. So the issue isn't gameside. I displayed a flat value of 5,5,5 across the entire screen. What I noticed was a gradient from left to right in brightness.

This is a boosted picture from my iphone to illustrate the issue. Ignore the reflection, it's a smooth gradient.

I'm not exactly sure what's going on here, but the issue is occurring somewhere between the final image render and the pixels. I get the feeling it has something to do with the driver board because it's dimming the same direction as the raster scan, but I don't know. I would like to know if this could be fixed via a firmware update. I suppose a slight graduated tone-map could be used to combat this problem, but that would be a band-aid to the problem.

Hope this helps guys!

I have checked display rotation. It doesn't change the location of brightness area in my case.

Probably the biggest issue I have with the DK2, can't enjoy anything with dark scenes due to this. Thanks for checking in on this Cyberrealty - if it's a hardware issue at least we could RMA for new units.

OK, yes, I think I see what you are saying.

If I had to guess, I would think it's a hardware issue, but let's see if anyone here knows more.

Yeah, that's my guess as well. This issue is present on my coworker's oculus as well.

well then it smells like a hardware issue
looks like a (dirty) software fix would have to omit a specific rgb range or something like this..
    well we will see.. :geek:

In demos where you have the option to disable/enable low persistence, does anyone else get a crazy purple hue to the entire scene (and the whole contrast/brightness issue goes away because everything is lit up).

I've done this in Cineveo and MaxVR and when I disable low persistence, it looks really funky. Maybe this also has something to do with the contrast/brightness issue?

same here... but right eye is darker, not official answer?
so might be hardware, otherwise we would hear something from OVR.

I've seen several reports about this issue, but I have not received confirmation of what the actual problem might be.

Let me see if I can get someone else to take a look.

Found a fix to this in our app. More info here. If seeing a darker Left eye, it might be accidental incorrect usage of Drash's Smear Correction when upgrading Oculus Unity integrations.

has there been an update on this? with the Jam I am doing a lot of darker stuff for the Gear and I can not even test it on my DK2. Support so far is of little help, so I hope this issue might have been diagnosed now.
