case and non printable hardware and a 3d printer kit for similar price to 350$
*edit* of course.. omitting the 3D printer from the 3D print kit would ultimately be the better option as most interested will probably already have their own 3D printer.

i'm expecting to order my 3d printer once my DK1 sells instead of buying the current DK2 as is.

the printable kit should include the main hardware not able to be printed.. and extra IR filters so we can make our triple camera arrays ourselves as USB cameras are very cheap on

I assume you have no experience with 3d printing.. So I'm gonna just warn you of a couple things!
I've been 3d printing for about 3 years non stop, and 3d printing is not as easy as it sounds.

    I have a thing-o-matic and I am upgrading to a replicator 2x (I have 800$ off on the 2x since I'm an early adopter).

I'll say a couple of things, you'll need skill, patience, mechanical skill, tools, rolls of plastic (ABS / PLA) and you'll be in a world of pain, because every print is different.. When you are new to 3d printing, about 75% of your prints will fail.
You'll need to be tweaking temperatures, extrusion parameters (although now it's pretty easy), you'll need to learn 3d modeling (or download existing models; although those models will probably suck and be out of spec).

ABS plastic warps, so you will need to tweak some more if using ABS. Extruders (mainly makerbot ones) are blocking for some reasons (plastic stripped at the gear, or incorrect thermistor).

I'd say, if you have no experience in 3d printing, buy one and get the experience; but don't believe that you'll get instant gratification easily.

And please don't buy a cheap 3d printer, your printer will simply suck.

So let's say you buy a cheap 3d printing that can do about 250 microns, technically, it should cost about 1500$.
Now you'll need rolls of plastic, PLA seem to be easier to work with, and you can get rolls for between 40 - 80$. I'd say, don't buy the cheap recycled stuff, as it's often out of spec (you'll get a variance from 1.75mm to 1.85mm; enough to block the extruder).

Don't be fooled, you will waste tons of plastic, you'll need 1 or 2KG .. That's about 80-160$ right there.

    Let's say 120$ of plastic + shipping and 1500$ printer + shipping (often between 100 - 200$, + taxes + customs).

It's not even worth thinking about it, unless your primary goal is 3d printing.

Oculus will sell 3d printer when Oculus gets bought by facebook!! Not gonna happen!

*Edit: I was wrong it seems! :o

    OLED is printable with inkjets.

Uhhhh, I hope you are not serious here.. :o

Do you understand that you'll need million wires that have a thickness of 50 microns to begin with?
And then magically lay out strands of OLEDs on precisely on those wires and then wire millions of connectors together and create a DSP to control them and interface this to existing hardware and do the signal conversion?

do you want me to google it for you, too? why not search "how to print OLED" before claiming it to not be possible. i'll be here when you get back.. unless i die or go blind.. if i go blind i'll get some text to speech.. and you'll have had more time

Then don't buy a 3d printer, make one!

Oh and don't buy stepper motors, make them!
Make the circuit boards too! The stepper drivers, the microcontrollers..

Wait wait, dig for precious metals in your backyard, buy some acids, put a mask, find silicon, reduce the amount of particulate contaminant in your shed and mask that silicon, create some ASICs, then invent the instructions set, create the compiler, create the IDE. No buyer remorse there!

It's easy right? Well it's about as hard as making a OLED display.

    WTF ?!!

This topic doesn't make any sense...

How the hell can you think about printing an OLED screen with a 200 dollars 3d printer... ?
    Same thing with most components.

The Oculus Rift plastic parts are only a very small amount of the total price. How sending a 3d printer for 200 bucks will help you in any way since most of the price is coming from components YOU CANT PRINT (or at least not with a 200 dollars 3d printer) !!!

I am a sale promoter for 3d printers and the models we have (The UP from PP3DP) are worth 2000 dollars and are far from being able to print anything else than basic plastic objects...
    Rift 3d models available here : viewtopic.php?t=1514
