Question

problem with meta quest 3

I have a Meta Quest 3 that cannot complete a factory reset.

In Android Recovery I get errors such as:• “make_ext4fs failed”

• “I/O error”

• “failed to make ext4 on /dev/block/by-name/metadata”

The /metadata partition cannot be formatted and the system cannot rebuild itself.

The device enters Android Recovery and Fastboot normally, but it cannot create the internal partitions.I need the full firmware to reinstall the system via fastboot/ADB, or confirmation that the internal memory is damaged.

    Hi DarkMateo 🙂

I need the full firmware to reinstall the system via fastboot/ADB

You can try the meta update tool

    Meta Quest Software Update

or following the steps in the video and get the firmware version on this page.

When I want to see adb devices, my quest doesn't appear in that command, in addition, I follow every step in the video

I've looked for that error and Google told me this:

    Understanding the Error

The Quest operating system is built on Android. During a factory reset, it tries to format and recreate the internal metadata partition using make_ext4fs.

An I/O error (Input/Output error) combined with a failure to build the file system means the storage hardware can no longer read or write data blocks properly. [1, 2]

What This Means For Your Device

Storage Failure: The internal flash memory is likely physically damaged, worn out, or permanently locked in a read-only state.

Recovery Limit: Because the bootloader and recovery environment cannot format the internal block device, standard user fixes or sideloading updates will not work.

No User Fix: This type of hardware block failure cannot be bypassed with software tools or fastboot commands at home. [1, 2]

    Next Steps

Contact Meta Store Support to report a dead device and check if a replacement or repair is available.

If your device is out of warranty, internal storage failure usually means the headset cannot be salvaged.

So, contact Meta support via email, chat or WhatsApp HERE if you still have warranty.

If your warranty has been expired look for a repair service like Fix my Oculus - if you are in the US - or google for a vr headset repair service in your country.
