Question

Anyone know of a good projector for 3D games and 3D films?

I don't want to spend much and might even look for a used projector if anyone knows of some good ones for 3D games and 3D movies. I would like one that used active 3D glasses Cheers!

@cybereality - You might know some also?

Yes, that is normal. HDMI 1.4a can only do up to 24Hz at 1080p, but 60Hz at 720p. You DO NOT want to enable 3D in Windows, I'm not sure that is ever needed (though I haven't messed with it much). Select "1080p, 1920 x 1080 (native)", the third option on that image and set it to 60hz. Then click "Stereoscopic 3D" on the left panel and make sure your projector is selected in the drop down, and that 3D checkbox is enabled, it should show an Nvidia 3DTV Play icon.

You may want to try another adapter for Rift and leave the projector on HDMI. This one worked for me:

I remember that I think active adapters DO NOT work. I think that specific DVI adapters should work on Rift. You can also try buying another DisplayPort-to-HDMI adapter that is NOT active. Get the latest version, at least 4K compatible.

@cybereality I don't see an option to select Nvidiaplay when it is connected to a display port. Take a look at this other pics I've uploaded. Also, if I switch it to the Hdmi the 3D only works when I set it in windows? On the Hdmi port I do see the option for Nvidia play, but like I say I have to set 3D in windows at 24Hz for it to display 3D? What could be wrong here? Cheers!

Here is the pic showing that I can't select Nvidia Play or am I doing something wrong?

@cybereality Does that Dvi to Hdmi carry sound for the Rift? If not how would I go about hearing anything on the Rift speakers or using the Mic on the Rift? Cheers!

Rift uses USB audio, so DVI should be fine.

I'm not sure about the Windows setting, I've actually been using an AMD card for my projector. I'm curious now, though, let me see if I can swap out an old Nvidia card and test it with my setup.

OK. So I installed an Nvidia card in my machine and got the 3DTV Play software. It seems to work fine with the projector set to 1080P 60Hz, 3D Enabled in Windows display options. I didn't really run into any problem. See the screenshots. Note that in Nvidia resolution settings I have it on 1080P (native) 60Hz (NOT the 3D option).

@cybereality  I have the settings you have but for some reason when I active 3D the resolution automatically changes to 1080p 1920 x 1080 24Hz. And box pops up saying it needs this resolution to run 3D?

When you ticked enable stereoscopic 3D, did it make you run through the Nvida 3D vision setup? Because that's what happened with my projector when I placed the tick in there. I had to pretend to run the 3D vision glasses to get it to work because it wouldn't allow me to tick it without going through the Nvidia setup wizard.

Do you think all this might be because I havn't purchased Nvidia TV player and just got it free with Nvidia 3D vision kit?

BTW, The demo films I have watched seem to run smooth at 24Hz. Would it be normal for a video to appear to run smoothly at only 1080p 1920 x 1080 24Hz?

Yes, that is normal. At 1080p, 3D only works at 24Hz. This is because of limitations of the older HDMI 1.4a specification that never got updated as technology improved. For video, particularly Blu-Ray 3D, 24Hz is fine as mostly all feature films only update at 24p (and, in fact, 24Hz will look better for 24p content than 60Hz since it can run at it's native refresh rate and avoid judder). However, for gaming you will want to set at 720p (1280x720) at 60Hz for a smoother experience.

When you enable 3D in Nvidia panel, you are required to go through the setup the first time. It should be set to the Nvidia 3DTV Play setup, though, not 3D Vision. It is basically the same thing, but there are a few small differences. In this case, you may want to run the setup with your 3D Vision emitter and 3D Vision monitor disconnected. This should allow you to output 3D to your projector.

Yep, sadly 3D is limited to 720p at 60hz per eye at the moment. 1080p24 is too slow for most people unfortunately. Some people can get 1080p30 working but thats above my head (check Nvidia 3D Vision forums for more info there) Thats why i use checkerboard 3D, it looks basically like 1080p miraculously, but its only available on some older Samsung 3DTVs, worth trying if 720p bothers you and you have the time/money/patience,etc (check Ebay and Craigslist). Nvidia won't update their software to support higher bandwidths and supposedly that is the only barrier to higher resolutions. But you will get used to the lower resolutions im sure, since 3D adds so much to the experience.
How to access and view Nvidia's user driven library of 3D photos and game screenshots.

@cybereality - Got it all up and running now. Thanks so much for the help. I had to put the projector on the Dvi to Hdmi though because the Rift CV1 is having none of it. I can only get Cv1 working plugged into the hdmi.
