Question

Come on Palmer, freak us!

So,

it's been over a year now since we got a glimpse at what VR might bring us through our beloved Development Kit. We've been kept busy with a steady stream of tiny bits of information regarding what OculusVR is up to behind closed doors. However, when it comes to solid facts on the current state of development, official statements on current or future specs or tasty new images out of the development process and the latest HMD-creations there's hardly anything new brought to us backers, developers and straight enthusiasts.

What I'm kindly asking you, Palmer, is wouldn't it be about time to pull down those panties and show us what you got in store right now? Maybe as a little Christmas present to the community? :D

Kind regards,
David

Okay, here's an idea. We set up large gyroscopic flywheels at Earth's north and south poles. The axle of the wheel is perpendicular to the Earth's rotational axis.

Set the fly wheel spinning (a low friction system, it should take little energy to maintain a high speed).

There will now be a torque on the wheel due to it trying to maintain its orientation while the earth spins round. That torque is directly tapping into the Earth's rotational momentum! I suspect half of the energy will come out of spinning flywheel, but who cares about 50% efficiency on free?

Similar systems could be built on the equator, but if we tap too much energy from those systems, they could throw off Earth's orbit.

Zalo, how do you know these things aren't already up there in space? Have you been up there and checked for yourself or do you "trust" LOL that someone else is looking out for you? Why should the 250 IQ NASA pros share with you? How do you know the 300IQ scientists that have already developed calico immortality technologies are going to share with you? What for? Or the 400IQ (or higher) Artifical Intelligences, here now or soon coming... Perhaps it is in their interests to sabotage any efforts by less abled human beings. Perhaps they are looking at ways to depopulate the planet. Gonna be a hell of an issue of we bring on immortality and keep breeding. How often do you Zalo, as maybe a 100-200 IQ being, go to the zoo and trouble yourself with a monkey, or one in the wild, or that ant crawling on your floor now. The rest of humanity just doesn't matter at some point to certain types.

http://www.nature.com/news/simulations-back-up-theory-that-universe-is-a-hologram-1.14328 A ten-dimensional theory of gravity makes the same predictions as standard quantum physics in fewer dimensions.

http://www.wired.com/wiredscience/2013/12/amplituhedron-jewel-quantum-physics/ Physicists reported this week the discovery of a jewel-like geometric object that dramatically simplifies calculations of particle interactions and challenges the notion that space and time are fundamental components of reality.

“The degree of efficiency is mind-boggling,” said Jacob Bourjaily, a theoretical physicist at Harvard University and an author of the first of two papers detailing the new idea. “You can easily do, on paper, computations that were infeasible even with a computer before.”

As KBK said, lots of people pushing the boundries. My greatest fear personally Zalo is there is already such a HUGE divide between human beings on this planet, as our knowledge grows, this divide seems like it will only increase. Read this by larry summers (he was in that facebook movie with zuckerberg and the winklevoss boyz), this is how the elite think of "lesser" human beings on this planet: http://www.whirledbank.org/ourwords/summers.html Palmer has already publically called me deranged and said wether I lived or died, he would be where he is today, that is the gratitude you get for trying to help people  (I know you love me Palmer ;)

Another idea for energy, for those of you that saw the new hunger games movie, what she does with her bow and arrow at the end. (spoilers ahead) there is a lightning research group in florida, sending up model rockets with wires to capture the lightning. There were some researchers at UCF looking at capturing this energy with massive counter rotating flywheels, but from what I recall, the materials were not cost effective enough to get the lightning down and store it without burning up critical components. One of these UCF guys I talked too had went to stonehenge, and said there was a circular moat around it (is there?), and he believed it would be possible to construct a huge flywheel/dynamo that would spin around stonehenge in this moat, then he went off into complicated physics stuff about ancient alien technology and my eyes began to glaze over :(

Its possible, how do you know I am not a computer program in IBM research labs? How do I know you aren't? I think even Abrash recently said that "reality" as we perceieve it is not the REAL reality, but just our senses and minds best interpretation of it.

http://www.keelynet.com/ Their view on some of this KBK/Geekmaster set of memes:

LOL! We are all and R2D2 hologram!

This suggests that given the proper tools it might even be possible to someday reach into the superholographic level of reality and pluck out scenes from the long-forgotten past. If the concreteness of the world is but a secondary reality and what is "there" is actually a holographic blur of frequencies, and if the brain is also a hologram and only selects some of the frequencies out of this blur and mathematically transforms them into sensory perceptions, what becomes of objective reality? Put quite simply, it ceases to exist. As the religions of the East have long upheld, the material world is Maya, an illusion, and although we may think we are physical beings moving through a physical world, this too is an illusion. We are really "receivers" floating through a kaleidoscopic sea of frequency, and what we extract from this sea and transmogrify into physical reality is but one channel from many extracted out of the superhologram.

Space wouldn't be the best place for them, they need to be connected to the ground to extract the torque.

Haha, I'm not so sure IQ has much to do with it, once you start getting to the upper echelons of humanity. Infact, I'd say the higher the IQ is, the more inclined they feel to prognosticate and assert their superiority. The real factor is money. Once one gets to a certain point, it is very easy to ignore low-monied individuals.

Based on your last idea, I think you might be interested in Electrodynamic tethers. The idea is this: spacecraft travel through the ionosphere dragging a cable behind them through the air. But the air is so charged that it collects excess electrons and powers the craft. I believe Nasa tried it once (a long while ago) and the cable got so hot that it melted off of the craft. I imagine similar things could be done with a "space elevator".

EDIT: Would we, as humans, even be able to exist in a superholographic plane? And still be human? I think it will be very interesting once we can send drones of some sort (perhaps operating on some quantum technique if electricity doesn't work up there) and get a video feed back to this plane of reality...

So you get all that new funding and that means you have hours of spare time to read through this thread? Back to work, and don't stop till I can use a Rift with my Smart phone from Metro Pcs.

You are right Palmer, I was high again on my medical marijuana, and probably got it confused. I apologize.

Whoaaaaa... this thread went pretty meta haha - just an observation. (And I disagree with the use of "Darkness", too obscure. Use simple human greed, instead)

This communication issue and the resulting hostility reminds me of a famous MMO that had genuinely interesting and exciting interactions between two sides when they could only speak gibberish to eachother and emote, splendidly justifying world PvP... before they allowed people to communicate and hop to either side to condemn you while you triumphantly stand over their avatar's corpse and make you feel bad...

If someone created a persistent game where people join to watch and participate in sharing ideas on a chalkboard and run physics simulations do you think the lack of guns and zombies would sink it?

Yes, part of the reason so many people feel "opensource" is a good thing, but so many other people say no, can't get anything really good done without tons of money. However, I remember a young kid, who was going to work on VR with or without money, how that same individual can later come out and say nope, couldn't have made significant progress without oodles of money, makes my brain hurt. However after 75 million of new money, who am I to argue with the monied capitalists on this planet bringing all of you VR. Sometimes mosquitoes need to fly away, or they get swatted. I am going to leave with my thoughts over at the 75 million dollar thread though.

That is brilliant Zalo! I was at dragoncon one year and Les Johnson http://lesjohnsonauthor.com/ gave some interesting talks about the space elevator. One fellow scientist was walking around with him passing around samples of carbon nanotubes telling us a warning. You see, in the early days of this research, everyone was sharing, US scientists, Russian Scientists, Chinese scientists, everyone was collaborating, maybe like a marconi, tesla, and edison, all working for the common goal of the good of humanity. They were only able to make very very short carbon nanotubes at that time, but later, they were able to make longer carbon nanotubes, and then things got "serious" - space elevators, tethers, etc and all of a sudden, the chinese and the US guys weren't talking to each other anymore, weren't sharing anymore, HUGE MONEY, and I suppose "recognition" started entering into the scientists lives, and no one was sharing anymore, and instead of a marconi, tesla, and edison continuing to work as friends and help each other, it all broke down. Edison spent massive amounts of time/money trying to discredit Tesla, and they used to be friends. This scientist, les johnson's friend, he said it was a damn shame that this happened with carbon nanotubes and happens in so many ways today.
